We earn nearly 5K a month but we’re always skint

Me and my partner have been together 6 years and we have 6 kids between us. We both work and on paper we should be doing ok but honestly we seem to have no money left most months and I dont understand where its all going.

I earn about £1450 a month after tax and he usually brings home around £3200 but it depends on overtime. We get child benefit as well and I get a bit of maintenance for my older two but its not a massive amount. So I know we arent on a low income exactly, which is why its frustrating that we are always counting down to payday.

I have DS11 and DD8 from my previous relationship, he has two girls aged 13 and 10 from his previous relationship and we have a DS who is 2 and a DD who is 8 months. The older two live with me full time. His girls have only recently come to live with us full time because their mum moved away and they wanted to stay with their dad. Their mum isnt paying maintenance at the moment. I dont blame the girls for any of this and they are lovely, its just obviously a lot more expensive having two extra children here all the time.

We rent a 3 bed house and its quite full now but moving isnt an option at the moment. Rent is £850, council tax is about £180, then all the usual bills, phones, petrol, car insurance etc. He pays the rent and most of the bigger bills from his account and I tend to pay for the food shop, things the kids need and bits for the house. It sort of ended up that way rather than us sitting down and deciding it was fair.

The thing is he keeps saying I need to cut down on the food shop. Last night I spent £235 and he was genuinely shocked when he saw it, asking how on earth I had spent that much and saying I need to look at my spending. I know £235 sounds a lot but its for 8 people and I got nappies, washing stuff, toilet roll, packed lunch things, milk, fruit, meat etc. I wasnt buying loads of treats or anything particularly expensive. We were running low on quite a few things so it wasnt even just food.

I did get annoyed because he has been ordering more Airfix stuff recently. He builds the models and paints them and its his hobby, which I do understand, everyone needs something they enjoy. But he will order a kit for £35 then paints another time and tools and bits for another £20 or £30 and he doesnt seem to see it as much because its not all in one go. He says its his hobby and he doesnt go out drinking or spend money on nights out. Fair enough but I dont have money to just buy things for myself whenever I want. If I need clothes or something I usually leave it until the next month.

He says thats different because the food shop is something I can control and I need to plan better. He reckons I buy too much and we dont need half the things I get. I said if he wants to do the food shop and feed all of us for less then he can have a go because its easy to criticise when you arent the one trying to make meals out of whats left in the fridge. That probably didnt help the conversation.

He then said since his girls moved in everything costs more and I seem to have a problem with it. I honestly dont. They are his children and of course they should be able to live with their dad if thats what they want. But we didnt really sit down and work out how much more it would cost or change how we pay for things. We just carried on as before and now we are struggling even more.

He has debt repayments as well, credit cards and a loan from before, which come to around £500 a month. He says those are fixed payments and have to be paid so theres not much he can do about them. I agree they need paying but it means a lot of his wages are already spoken for before we have even bought food or put petrol in the car. His overtime isnt guaranteed either so some months he gets less than £3200.

I dont know if we are just spending too much or if this is what it costs to run a house with this many kids now. We dont have expensive holidays or go out much. The kids have clubs and school things to pay for, they grow out of clothes and shoes, the little ones need nappies and all that. Then theres always something else, a birthday or a school trip or something needs replacing.

We dont have a joint account and neither of us has a proper idea of what the other has left after bills. He thinks he pays most of the money out because the rent and bills come out of his account, and I feel like Im constantly spending mine on everyone and everything and never have anything left. We have never actually added everything up together which I know sounds stupid.

I dont want this to turn into me saying he shouldnt buy his hobby stuff or that his girls cost too much, because thats not what I mean. I just dont see how we can both be working and bringing that much in and still be skint all the time. Is £235 actually ridiculous for a weekly shop for this many people or do I need to look properly at what Im spending? And how do other people split everything when there are children from previous relationships as well?

6 children , and you rent , I would look to see if you can claim UC , you might be surprised

undergroundandoverground · 16/10/2026 20:28

Go on the martin lewis money saving website.

Sit down together and write down ALL of yours and his incoming money and outgoing money.

Wages, maintenance, child benefit, bills, groceries, kids costs, debts, kids birthdays and xmas, childcare, hobbies, etc.

You need to sit together and decide how the outgoings should be split.

I suspect when you add up EVERYTHING you spend it's rather a lot.

Also look at the debt section. I'd be shocked if the amount he's paying monthly can't be reduced. That's a huge monthly amount.

And his ex should be paying maintenance. Did he pay her maintenance before she moved away?

Why should they get to claim benefits for having 6 kids and 5k a month that’s ludicrous

Jonasate · 16/10/2026 20:30

Sounds your like you’re doing your best and a bloody good job, given you have 8 mouths to feed!! Men just love to criticise!! Good idea asking him to do the food shop, he will have a shock

undergroundandoverground · 16/10/2026 20:36

I've just read that the childcare is only coming out of your money. That is not fair.
I am even stronger in my suspicions now that you are massively out of pocket in this arrangement than him. Food and clothes for two extra kids, his kids. Childcare for littles who are both your kids but it's your income taking the hit there too.

Shopping for a family of 8 with two in nappies - he shouldn't be having a go here unless he's willing to do the meal planning, shopping and budgetting for a few months. 🙄Your list of what you have bought and meal plan seem fine to me.

His debt, credit card usage, hobby spends, having a go about the food shop and suggesting the cut back could be nappies. He's not coming over great tbh.

I'm also thinking.... your 2 older kids had a mum focusing on them. Now they have 4 extra full time children to share you with. That's such a big shift for them. Both in terms of space at home, time, family finances etc....

onedayillmoveon · 16/10/2026 20:37

bananasarent · 16/10/2026 11:18

I'm constantly surprised on here that people don't seem to understand that having multiple children is a LUXURY (financially speaking) that you have to really weigh up if you can afford it before having them (and yes, part of that consideration should have been if his children suddenly needed up living with you full time as that's always a "risk"/chance if a person has children). I can't imagine many people people with 2 children each already would think it makes sense to have another 2 together.

I actually think this could be rage bait as it seems so clearly ridiculous...

But if it is not, then of course you're not spending too much if you're paying for 8 people and have a £235 weekly shop. Groceries etc are expensive. I agree you need to sit down with him and go through all the expenditure and what you earn and you probably ought to just have it all from one joint account

I can only second this.

Last night I spent £235 and he was genuinely shocked when he saw it, asking how on earth I had spent that much and saying I need to look at my spending.

I'm genuinely shocked someone on a relatively low income (given your family size) is wasting £500 a month on interest for debts. That's almost half as much as your rent and council tax combined.

What a bloody cheek for him to say you need to look at your spending! Meanwhile he continues to fritter away money on model aeroplanes while you can't afford new clothes.

I hope his dick is gold plated at the very least.

I don't think you can 'gold plate' it... Gold leaf, yes. Plate ouch.

They must be a horny couple though... 6 children and not enough to pay for them...

Obviously I know kids are expensive lol I’m not thick. But we werent struggling like this before his girls moved in, and I’m not saying they shouldnt be here, they are his kids. It’s more that whenever I bring up money he just says it’s my spending and I need to cut back. Like the food shop is the problem but his own spending doesnt seem to count because its his hobby. I know we need to sit down and go through everything properly but it’s a bit unfair to act like it’s all me.

Do you get maintenance money for his girls?

Unreasonableexpectation · 16/10/2026 20:50

MoonlitMabel · 16/10/2026 13:47

I shop at Aldi mostly, sometimes Asda if I need bits Aldi dont have. I have tried to plan meals because he keeps saying I need to so this is what ive got for the week. The £235 included household bits and nappies as well not just food.

I got 2 big packs of nappies (2 different sizes, 2yo is potty trained but needs nappies overnight still), wipes, nappy bags, washing powder, fabric conditioner, toilet roll, kitchen roll, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste and handwash. Also bin bags and some cleaning stuff as we were running out.

Food wise milk, bread, wraps, cereal, porridge oats, butter, cheese, yoghurt, eggs, bananas, apples, grapes, satsumas, potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cucumber, peppers, onions, mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, frozen peas, frozen sweetcorn, tins of beans, chopped tomatoes, pasta, rice, noodles, baked beans, spaghetti hoops, tuna, soup, stock cubes and passata. Got chicken thighs, chicken breasts, mince, sausages, bacon, fish fingers, frozen fish, ham and a big pack of beef burgers. Also crisps, biscuits, crackers, squash and a couple of little treats for the kids but it wasn’t all snacks/junk.

Meal plan is:
Tonight - sausage mash and veg
Sat - chicken wraps with salad and wedges
Sun - mince and potatoes with veg
Mon - pasta bolognese
Tues - jacket potatoes with beans/cheese and tuna
Wed - chicken and rice
Thurs - fish fingers, chips and peas

Lunches are sandwiches or wraps, fruit and yoghurt, the older ones have school dinners some days too. Breakfast is cereal or toast mostly. Obviously the little ones dont eat all the same things and DS2 is fussy with some stuff so I do have to have things he will eat.

I dont think its an extravagant shop but maybe im wrong. The nappies were a big part of it but we do need them and I thought it made sense to get them while we were there rather than having to go back.

I am back at work yes, nursery for the little ones is part of the costs and it does come out of my money. I dont know the exact figure off the top of my head. He was paying maintenance for his girls before they moved in but thats stopped now obviously. He gets child benefit for them.

We do buy second hand clothes and things, im not buying everything new for 6 kids. I know we need to sit down and go through the bills properly, I just wanted to know if the shop was actually unreasonable because he made me feel like id spent a fortune on things we dont need.

So wait a minute, he earns more than double what you do, but when his kids move in permanently he actually has MORE money to spare because he stops paying maintenance and starts getting child benefit, while you’re the one that’s left with the actual increased cost i.e. feeding them. Yes that makes sense.

Fourlittlepiggies · 16/10/2026 20:52

6 dc are bloody expensive! I have 4 dc and things like food shopping, getting new clothes/ shoes including school stuff is eye watering.

WashinIsNeverDone · 16/10/2026 20:56

Yous need to go through a months statement and make a plan. Make a list of stuff that has to be payed like bills debt and shopping. You'll see where the money is leaking from

I have 5 kids and I think the weekly food shop is a tad high but my kids are wee skinny things 2nd percentile for weight and height so doubt they eat like bigger kids.

Norberta · 16/10/2026 20:58

We take home more than twice that and have half the kids and we are still broke! Can’t believe you’re not more broke tbh

JJWT · 16/10/2026 20:58

Why the hell is their mum not paying maintenance? There"d be hell to pay on here if a Dad did that.

indeed

thats why I think they should have a bills bank account and a grocery bank account and put proportionally into those account on what they earn. Basically they both contribute 40% of their net pay for bills and then both put in for the grocery shopping

Sweetandnice · 16/10/2026 21:04

You need to budget op.
Honestly that's the best way. Write down how much is coming in and what is going out where. Once its on paper you can fully see.
As for the food shop again set you weekly budget how much is total for the week . For example my shop is £100 for the week I put aside £400 in a separate account for the month on pay day .
Yes sometimes you might have to spend extra as you need extra bits but this is the best way.

NewNameW · 16/10/2026 21:12

Have you considered swapping bills?

You pay for the rent and council tax (that's close or slightly more) and he does the shopping meal planning ect. It may cost you slightly more but at least it's a constant bill and not a flow of you cut down?

Let him give it a go! I remember having to list everything out to my ex and being like well, £36 of this week shop is just your monster.... you want pork and beef and lamb (im veggie) - swapping was a game changer. But spoiler - he paid but I still had to do all the ordering. Do better than me.

Say - Look, I can afford xyz since we aren't splitting equally, so i'll pay the rent an council tax and you take over the shopping and kids clothes since that's where you think it's easy to cut back.

The kids will always have the roof as you'll be paying it, and no decent dad of 6 will let his kids go hungry!

Because it spoils your clothes and clogs up washing machines. It makes towels less absorbent too.

I didnt know any of this but I have never bought the stuff as I just didn't get what difference it would actually make and a few quid here and there does add up.

Is it so bad? My friend lived in what could pretty fairly be described as close on a minor stately home and they shared rooms because they liked it - even thought there were corridors of rooms to choose from.

So if op's shop is £235 a week then she needs to put aside £930 .

She is though? She is paying for the food, you can't really budget a food shop unless you eat the same things constantly. You also can't preplan food shops until you know whats on offer and there is still a whole host of non food items people need to buy weekly.

That is almost all her wage too.

Hence me saying at least if she paid the rent it's a set thing done every month. Let him budget it.

FYI - £250 a week is my absolute limit on a family of 4 + a dog. I cant imagine 2 extra mouths

justasking111 · 16/10/2026 21:50

The debt repayments are crucifying you. £500 pcm. He needs to pay them down instead of spending money on airfix toys.
