Do all 18 years old go on UC if they cannot find a job

Do the family needs to show their income or the new adult is considered their own financial unit now , even if they live with the parents and their UC is given them

You put a small amount aside weekly or monthly and never touch it whatever happens. We? There were two of you? There’s one of me. Or maybe you look for a better paid job or seek promotion? Not easy of course but many people manage it.

Dude this is out of reach for a hell of a lot of people. Hmm

I'm starting to think people are deliberately muckraking on this thread, some of the rubbish they're coming out with.

I remember someone in my mum's village losing her care home job when the Sunday and late evening buses got scrapped. Working Sundays was mandatory, as was working until 10pm on the late shift. She could't get to and from work.

You can be willing to do the job, but if the transport isn't there, you are screwed.

I'm surprised we haven't had the people who used to walk 20 miles a day to get to and from work yet.

TheOutlier · 04/02/2026 11:08

No, easier to let those mugs who do work while having neurodivergent kids, and save and do antisocial hours pay for it!

She has other medical needs that aren't any of your business.
What should we have done. Give her up for adoption when we discovered her various needs?

In a hurricane and up hill 😂

If that disabled there is more support, isn’t there? The question was “do all 18-year-olds go on benefits”? They don’t. I know people with profoundly disabled kids who have been able to go to residential colleges and get supported living. Not without a fight with the authorities, I admit!

I don’t get this comment.

Plenty of people walk to work.

Some cycle.

Some drive.

Some get the train.

Some get a bus.

Some get 2 buses.

Getting to work involves some effort. I don’t get it.

Theres always a variation to prove Britain has lost its backbone.

….then our mums and dads killed us and danced on our graves. Thats the punchline. Monty Python.

TheOutlier · 04/02/2026 11:23

But seriously if the majority didn’t work or study (or work and study) then THERE WOULD BE NO MONEY.

Needmorelego · 04/02/2026 11:23

@TheOutlier I do get support for looking after my daughter. I get Carers Allowance and she receives PIP.
This means she probably won't need to claim UC at 18.
Is that ok with you?

Huh?
This whole thread is about unemployed 18 year olds claiming UC (essentially Job Seekers Allowance but it's not called that) while they are LOOKING for work.
They WANT to be working.
They WANT a job.

TheOutlier · 04/02/2026 11:28

Some don’t appear to want to work like @selffellatingouroborosofhate who had every possible reason why it wasn’t possible.

I assumed pp was referencing the ‘get on your bike’ philosophy, à la Norman Tebbit…

But if they don't actually search for jobs and/or attend sessions at the job centre then the UC will stop.

She's a single parent and still manages that's what she is trying to say.

Well lovely for her.
Not everyone has that luck.

TheOutlier · 04/02/2026 11:37

Norman Tebbit was right.

What happened when my DC turned 18? One was going straight on to uni. Over the summer he lived at home, was housed and fed as usual and that didn’t really cost a lot. Anything else he wanted to do he had saved for previously. The other was still at school. When she left she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do. I housed and fed her and she looked for jobs and worked for a gap year in a shopping centre which meant an hour’s travel on public transport. It wasn’t a posh “gap yah”. I supported them in this time because I didn’t expect other taxpayers to do it. I then supported their living costs through uni.

They need to apply online to get a job. We live in a society that needs hand holding. My partner was talking to this man the other day who works in VAT and he said businesses are scared to hire or give out apprenticeships to 18 year olds because they end up leaving to protect their mental health. The resilience from our young people is shocking and it's unfortunate they learn that from their parents. My children aren't lucky to have jobs they were hired because their employers know they like money.

Why are so many posters making work sound like some kind of unique hardship that only a few, lucky people have the privilege of undertaking?

It’s really weird.
