£220,000 gross - what is net salary

109 replies

padronpepper · 18/09/2025 22:22

Single person, no dependents.
What would net salary be - without pension deductions?

@londongirl12
Is there a rule that a person has to google something rather than ask on MN?

of course not, but neither is there a rule that you need to wait to be spoon fed when you're all growed up
anyone genuinely earning such a sum would have found out how tax works long ago.

as an old teacher used to drum into us, there are more marks for showing how you tried than for getting the correct answer

I make approx 220k and there are weird responses on this thread...

Also braced to be given a load of shit for this but here we go...

I have no student loans now
I will clear approx £6k per month this year

80k will go into pension (i have unused allowance from a mat leave - generally its 60k that goes in)
Of that take home of 6k we need 4k to keep the lights on (as our monthly Basics are 8k, of which childcare is 4.5k pm?!?)
about 1.7k ish pm (aiming for 20k per year) goes into savings
Leaving £300 pm for my "everything else" fun money

Total tax is about 63k

Tldr: I make 220k and have 300pm fun money..Fucking depressing stuff....

Because you put a fortune into pension and savings. I can’t believe you find that depressing, you’re a joke or a troll.

Really ‘fucking depressing’ saving £1.7k a month… 😂 What planet are you on.

@BilbaoBaggage
Sorry to disappoint you but I am not referring to my husband. If you had also read my op properly you will see I asked about a single person with no dependents.

Not disappointed. But there also has to be a reason to be asking the question as it must have an impact on you beyond idle curiosity e.g. this is a boyfriend.

padronpepper · 19/09/2025 20:43

@Wot23
Yet again - I did not say this is my salary.
Are you ‘all growed up’ yourself? Or do you need to be spoon fed to help you to understand a very simple 2 line question?

You have £2k/month spare and are choosing to save most of that. This is a good thing, but it makes your TL:DR somewhat disingenuous.

You have high outgoings, but you also have more than enough spare to live a very comfortable lifestyle as well as having a well stuffed pension.

LaughingAloudAsWeGoInsane · 19/09/2025 20:47

People are very bitter or jealous or something. Lots of things people post could be answered by google but most posters don’t get told that.

Shr3dding · 19/09/2025 20:56

padronpepper · 19/09/2025 20:14

I had a couple of answers from posters within 3 minutes of asking the question last night and I thanked them.
Are we only allowed to ask questions when the answers can’t be found by googling?

When it's a question that can be answered instantly by Google, yes, I do think it's strange that anyone bothers to add the extra faff of starting a thread and waiting for replies that they have no way of knowing are accurate

Whatever the question is, nothing to do with what section it's posted in

Not at all. I just can’t abide lazy people who expect others to do the working out for them.

padronpepper · 19/09/2025 21:00

@AmIHumanOrAmIAYeti
I am not lazy. I have asked a question on mumsnet. You don’t have to respond if you don’t like the question I asked.
I thanked the people who replied with answers to my question.

OP posts:
Sadza · 19/09/2025 21:02

This is a bit of a strange question….asking an easily googled question with no context or idea of why you’re asking, and then being quite sharp when people speculate or send you to google?

padronpepper · 19/09/2025 21:04

@Sadza
I am being sharp because I have been accused of being a troll , being a sock puppet, being lazy and being told to use a foodbank.

OP posts:
padronpepper · 19/09/2025 21:05

And yet again is it against mn rules to ask a question rather than google ?

An unspoken rule, yes. Otherwise Mumsnet would turn into a search engine not a discussion forum.

@AmIHumanOrAmIAYeti
I said ‘salary’, I didn’t say ‘my salary’.
Are you capable of understanding the difference?

Why so chippy?

padronpepper · 19/09/2025 21:08

@Chonk
That’s news to me.

OP posts:
padronpepper · 19/09/2025 21:11

You may have missed the deleted posts accusing me of being a troll and a sock puppet and being told to use a foodbank.
You might be chippy too if those responses were directed at you.

But as others have said, that outcome of £300 spending money per month is very much your choice. What is it you are saving 20k a year for exactly?

Is £300 per month including holidays? It's really not much at all for a high earner.

Have you told the poster on Style and Beauty who asked about where Victoria Starmer’s green dress is from that she is breaking an unwritten MN rule? That she should have googled and not asked a question?

...By choice, not least because of how much you choose to save. If you post about your not insubstantial salary, how much you save, and your choice to have a child, "fucking depressing" is not really how that post should end, I think.

Notmyreality · 19/09/2025 21:21

It’s the gross salary equivalent to winning
Set for Life on the lottery.

Although, they actually have to work for it, so not quite.
