My rent has just increased,I’m single live alone I’ve worked out after I’ve paid rent, bills, and food I’m left with £175 for the month, does anyone else live on this?

It depends if you work? If so do you have travel costs and do you buy lunch away from home?

pinenuts75 · 14/08/2025 16:09

Yes I work, no travel costs can’t afford to run a car and take own lunch

A lot of people live on less, with no available income after bills.

I've seen really good advice on here with budgeting etc.
If you can put up a monthly breakdown, you might get some new ideas.

pinenuts75 · 14/08/2025 16:24

Rent £750
Council tax £131
electric and gas £64
water £26
internet £27
phone £6
netflix £10

Your outgoings are already pretty low, I guess you could drop the Netflix and shop around for new internet deals but that’s very reasonable already.

shellyleppard · 14/08/2025 16:26

@pinenuts75 are you claiming single person discount on the council tax? Could you drop the Netflix and save £10 that way? Also can you get a cheaper internet deal? I know you probably have already done these things but if I'm really really struggling I look at what I can get rid of

AdoraBell · 14/08/2025 16:28

£175 after bills and food isn’t too bad. You can save money.

pinenuts75 · 14/08/2025 16:31

Yes I claim single person, I mean I could drop Netflix but I just feel what’s the point in working I need to have something I can enjoy in life, and I’m on a fixed contract with internet till January.

Don’t bother cancelling Netflix. You need escapism and company.

You already seem to live very frugally and your phone and internet seem miles cheaper than mine.

Beammeupscotty2025 · 14/08/2025 16:35

Do you work full time?

Betheadore · 14/08/2025 16:36

What's your take home and how much are you spending on food?

I take home about 1,280 after tax
spend about £100 a month on food

No I don't but don't drop netflix. £10 a month is amazing value for the amount of shows/films you get which is even more important if you have little disposable income.

I’m not in a contract with my phone, bought the phone outright. How much do you pay for internet? It’s worth shopping around

So sorry, but this is the plight of single people. They just can't afford to live any more. Well, those in employment can't. My son is the same. £1000+ rent per month on an average wage isn't doable after Tax, NI, Pension contribution, student loan and travel to work. Every sympathy - there are no easy answers.

It’s true I can’t even afford to get a car to get me to and from work, well I could but I would probably have nothing left.

If you’re working full time then you’re being paid less than NMW if you only take £1280 home.

Have you applied for universal credit, you might be entitled to help with your rent. Check out entitledto.co.uk

pinenuts75 · 14/08/2025 16:46

And I’ve looked for other work but there is nothing

Your outgoings look pretty lean. Can you up your incomings at all? Overtime or a second PT job/babysitting/dog walking etc?

Betheadore · 14/08/2025 16:48

If you were working full time on min wage, you'd be taking home around £1700.

Can you up your hours?
Full time is 37.5 to 40 hrs pw

I could look into this, I just hate applying for things like this.
