I've posted about this before and it is getting worse. Takes kids into London today to spend some pocket money off grandparents. Goes yo Pizza Hut and its card only them the glossier shop and they don't Even have tills 😡 you put details into the iPad and pay contactless. I don't understand how all these business are getting away with refusing to accept cash.

A lot of places we went to in Yorkshire seemed to prefer cash so knowing this we made the effort to get plenty of cash out of the bank for holidaying there.

Actually a quick google shows me I am not the only one that has to ring the bank to put a card on for Apple Pay.

I think I did for Apple Pay. I did it once and didn’t have to do it again when I changed iPhones.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 08/12/2024 12:49

@LittleBearPad

There’s also a cost for stallholders to people using cash in terms of inconvenience, security, time etc.

Yes - I can see that and it makes so much sense. I'm just reporting what the stall holder told me. A typical market clothing stall and it didn't have the hall marks of the places people identify with money laundering.

Ahh - this was in Skipton.

Well unfortunately I do have to, I put in the 3 digit codes and it popped up with ring your bank, maybe it's for people that rarely change their phone, it put me off using it as it's too much bother.

I’ve got a number of different cards and have changed devices a few times and never had to do it. DH is the same.

I just tried again, it said card not added, contact card issuer for more information, this was M&S credit card, probably a crap card to use, last time I had to ring them for a payment that didn't go through it took ages and load of typing in verification stuff on the phone, it's just all so onerous

Maybe not laundering drugs money etc., but certainly very high risk of black economy tax evasion and benefit fraud by not declaring all their takings. Market traders are regarded by HMRC as being very high risk because they're often cash only and much harder to trace and keep track of being mobile rather than having fixed bricks n mortar business premises.

Yep, same here. DS and I have all our cards on our iphones and the entire transfer process from one iphone to another is very quick and seemless. I did mine a few months ago, and DS did his last Christmas. A few apps required you to re-enter your password/code but most didn't. In fact, I was panicking because I was in the middle of buying a new car on holiday when my iphone broke, so I needed different banking apps and a debit card which was only in my apple wallet (I'd left the card itself at home as it was an account I used for savings and never used it on a day to day basis). I picked up the phone from an Amazon locker around 5pm, and had transferred everything from the old to new, and able to send payments for the new car by around 8pm that same day. No phone calls needed to anyone. I remember last Christmas my son getting his new iphone just before Christmas lunch, and by the time we'd finished eating, he'd transferred everything over automatically, and was happily using his new phone - he gave the old one to DH who did the same that evening.

My 11 year old has a debit card (actually has a zip card for TFL as well live in London) but if your kids were under 11 they’d be free and if over then they could have their own cards.

So you expect your dc to pay for their own travel on a family day out once they are 11? That is crazy to me.

Pay themselves as in tap their own cards. Not use their own money.
Really weird take.

I've recently read an article saying slightly more people are using cash in shops now.

After trying to also put the M&S card on my new iMac and getting the same message of contact card issuer, I then rang the M&S bank🙁apparently my card was on too many things, not sure what these things were but it was something about too many tokens, I had seen tokens mentioned when I googled and there was an error which she had to clear, maybe she cleared some tokens?? but now it is on my iPhone, watch and iMac. Maybe someone knows what these tokens are and hopefully my post may help someone else if the have the same problem

I don't think I can face ringing Halifax today for another card, as I spent about 30 mins with M&S bank and I don't use Halifax one much, the other card that needs ringing up is my debit card but I don't really use that much at all, at least my main use card is on there now.

Their accounts are attached to their cards so it’s their own money. I don’t want to have to transfer funds around, or have my 13 yo wondering around a city with their bank cards. As their mum, I just want to pay for me and my 3 young teens. Weird that I cannot do that and technology makes it harder.

You don’t want a 13 year old walking around with their bank card? You need to realise that your kids are growing up. Your 13 year old should have no issues carrying around a bank card; it should be standard really. Or you are going to realise in a few years that you haven’t prepared your child for teenage life and they are very immature.

They also aren’t spending their own money. You just transfer what’s needed for the days travel and then it’s the exact same money you’d have spent on travel. It takes less than a minute. By teenage years, it isn’t hard.

With three children it is extra hassle and no, we live in the West Country and when we visit London my dc don’t bring their cards. There’s no need. I pay. Yes they are growing up but they are 13. My 16 year old would have her card and is perfectly well adapted and mature. I’m happy with my parenting choices and wanting to take my dc to see Taylor Swift without them having to spend any of their own money.

seriously, who does a family outing, makes their dc pay for trains then pays them back? That’s not normal for a family day out.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 08/12/2024 16:11

I don't see why not, a teenager would obviously understand it was to make things easier for you. Stick £30 in their account before you go if you're uncomfortable with having to pay them back.

I know most people happily don't use cash, but I think it's discriminating against a lot of people with mild disabilities. I know someone who can't be trusted to have a debit/credit card, but can use cash. They understand that, and that when they have spent what they have in their wallet that it has gone. Even with a card loaded with a certain fixed amount of money they wouldn't understand the "value" of the money or know how much was left on it at any point in time.

My son is like that with vouchers/coupons. He just cant understand it is a cash equivalent - so doesnt get the value of it, exactly as you've described. It's strange - tried several times to explain. He has dyslexia and struggles with numeracy - very few other issues but the voucher one is odd!

You just send them the fare cost ahead of time. It takes seconds.

This thread is full of luddites who can't handle basic common tech. Whatever, noone cares, but stop arguing it shouldn't be a thing because you can't move with the times and function in the 21st century 🤷‍♀️

Fairyliz · 08/12/2024 17:12

Yes it’s great using cards until your bank suddenly decides to freeze it (looking at you Nat West).
So to get over this you have to have two accounts and the fuss moving money from one to another.
Even this doesn’t help when systems go down which appears to be happening more and more lately.

3 bank transfers when I don’t know how much it will cost is extra admin. I’m no luddite! I have 3 dc and a full time senior job. I happily use Apple Pay, do all my banking on apps etc. but why do I have to add extra life admin when it was more simple to buy a ticket. It’s extra unnecessary faff. Are you this rude in real life or just when anonymous on the internet.

You have a really strange understanding of “their money” and “making them pay.” They are not, in any way, being made to pay for their own travel. They just use their own cards.

If you’re scrimping every penny, I guess it’s not great to stand and calculate the cost of the travel before each tap so you can transfer it. But most people would just check an extra 20 quid or whatever onto their kid’s card and let them crack on.

Its not a bank transfer, it costs nothing, it takes seconds. It's quicker than buying multiple tickets at a machine.

I’m clearly from another planet. Maybe if you’re doing this all the time it’s become normalised, but I’d buy an Oyster card if that’s the case. This year was the first time I’ve come across it. I do find it odd transferring money to dc when previously I just bought tickets from a machine, which was super easy. As someone visiting once a year, it did not make life easier. Happy to be in the minority.

If I need to transfer money to my 3 dcs accounts to cover their travel costs then it is a bank transfer. Me tapping my card I get - works fine for single travellers. Don’t be patronising when you can’t be bothered to read my post.

Except it isn't, if you're doing it properly. You do not understand the tech were talking about, and you won't try. Maybe you should just ask for the details since you don't know them, instead of being all defensive about your complete lack of knowledge.
