PREMIUM BONDS AUGUST 2024

1000 replies

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2024 19:12

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of
the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be
exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a
bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

£100 for me this month.

mcmooberry · 02/08/2024 22:46

£200 here on FH which I have mentally spent many times over already.
Sympathy to any FHs with nowt, I hate those months!

Starseeking · 02/08/2024 22:57

Nothing for me this month 😢

viktoria · 03/08/2024 00:30

CheeseNcrackerz · 02/08/2024 07:30

I've got the full £50k invested and almost always get a couple of hundreds quid....

This month £10,250!

Wonderful! Enjoy your winnings!

clary · 03/08/2024 01:12

well done to @CheeseNcrackerz and all other big winners!

£250 for me on FH so pretty happy. Tho I could've done with a big one as we have a big bill coming up... still this is better than nothing and in fact more than I've won since March.

bluevelvetbox · 03/08/2024 07:20

I know someone has put this on here before but can you tell me how to work out the interest rate please on winnings.

Well done to all of the winners.

familyissues12345 · 03/08/2024 09:12

£350 for me (FH) and £25 for DH (half holdings)

pretty pleased with that, taking the teens away mid month so It'll make a dent in the feeding budget! Grin

familyissues12345 · 03/08/2024 09:19

longtompot · 01/08/2024 11:16

Dh could have potentially won £10k! There is a bond eligible with his holdings amount on the same date in our area. Won't know until later as I don't have his account log in details. Fingers crossed please🤞

Did you win?!

Buster27 · 03/08/2024 09:38

£50 for me (on around 22k), also won £50 last month which was my first draw. Pleased to have won something but hoping some bigger wins are coming 🤞

Spacecrispsnack · 03/08/2024 10:13

@bluevelvetbox if you have 12 mo this of winnings add them all up to get a total then do this figure / total holding x100 to give you a %

if you don’t yet have 12 months you’ll need to then multiply to work out an approximate amount over 12 months - so if you had 6 months multiply by 2 to get to 12 months etc

LuckbeaLady2 · 03/08/2024 10:56

@Ygraine @Eeepsh that's amazing

longtompot · 03/08/2024 11:27

familyissues12345 · 03/08/2024 09:19

Did you win?!

Sadly not that amount, he just won £375. I didn't win anything :(

BuyingButterAndSatinSandals · 03/08/2024 12:26

Phase2 · 02/08/2024 12:07

@BuyingButterAndSatinSandals so I've been on the threads for ages, last year I took all the bonds out and reinvested as lump sums as a daft experiment. Just fed up with never winning anything decent really - most is this month (£150) but on 18k i think I can do better elsewhere

I'm guessing that the idea was that a smaller number of large individual bonds might win more than lots of small individual bonds.

Having read the PB information from Money Saving Expert and Money Marvel linked to and mentioned by Blondes and others on here, it looks like most of us need to be surprised when we do win rather than when we don't! Combining that with interest on savings accounts at the moment of around 5%, you're probably right to think that you can do better elsewhere than with PBs. Some do buck the trend though, and it's hard to give up hope of being one of them so far! I'll need to cash in nearly all our bonds in less than two years, so that will be the length of my own daft experiment! I'm really hoping that at that point I'm not bemoaning the amount I could have/should have made in interest in a savings account...

I have only started to read these threads quite recently but they have already been very helpful. I count myself as a PB-holder newbie since starting to invest in them only this April and on a small scale. I can't really count the tiny bond I remember being bought for me in childhood but lost back in the mists of time, although I am going to try to track it down with NS&I.

ThatAgileLimeCat · 03/08/2024 13:38

Nothing again. 2nd month running and 2nd month of holding them. Got 10k in so was hoping to get at least something by now.

Phase2 · 03/08/2024 14:35

@BuyingButterAndSatinSandals yes but not a serious experiment , bye for amusement really. I think it's fun ish but I want to guarantee some return so happy with my choice. I've left a couple of grand.

Downandout24 · 03/08/2024 15:16

Awarding myself the most ridiculous question ever asked prize now …. before I go and research properly - if I wanted to save - can I do it via buying £25 a month bond - and then the amount in the bonds is valid for an entry into winning each month? Have I understood this correctly?

InMySpareTime · 03/08/2024 15:38

You can invest £25 per month, then the number of entries you have in each draw will increase by 25 each month.
Eg
Month 1 - no entries as bonds need a clear month invested before they are eligible.
Month 2 - 25 entries into the draw
Month 3 - 50 entries into the draw (invested in months 1 and 2)
Month 3 - 75 entries into the draw

Etc.

Snowpaw · 03/08/2024 19:50

£125 on 23k, alright with that.

So far this year

£275 this month !

One month this year, zero

One month £500 the biggest win so far !

Other months, smaller winnings £50

ImPunbelievable · 04/08/2024 13:54

pocketaces · 02/08/2024 13:35

Full holding and only 50 quid this month again. I never get the bigger prizes. Highest ever is 500.

Actually makes me angry every month. Totally irrational I know lol but that's how it is.

Same! I have full holdings now and won £75 which is typical for me. My return over the last year has been a woeful £1175 or 2.5%.

I've just shrugged it off as it's tax free and I'm a high rate tax payer, but actually have worked out that in my normal instant access account earning 3.75%, I'd have earned £1685 - 40% which is £1012 so not much in it really!

Aposterhasnoname · 04/08/2024 20:45

Nothing this month, broken our 19 month winning streak. 😔

YakinikuGal · 04/08/2024 23:03

I won £100 on a £1700 holding

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/08/2024 23:08

YakinikuGal · 04/08/2024 23:03

I won £100 on a £1700 holding

Lovely to see wins on small holdings

OP posts:
LakelandDreams · 05/08/2024 08:04

I don't think 1700 is a 'small' holding. 50k, which seems to be many on here, is beyond the dreams of most people.
