PREMIUM BONDS AUGUST 2024

1000 replies

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2024 19:12

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of
the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be
exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a
bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

Feeling grumpy… £125 on FH and a big fat £0 for DH also on FH.

My winnings have been totally rubbish this year…hoping for that to change for the remaining 4 draws of the year!

Huge congratulations @CheeseNcrackerz! Enjoy spending it!

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/08/2024 12:26

CheeseNcrackerz · 02/08/2024 07:30

I've got the full £50k invested and almost always get a couple of hundreds quid....

This month £10,250!

Wow @CheeseNcrackerz

You must be this months winner

ZERO again this month. Have had various amounts in PB since Oct last year, ranging from FH originally down to only around £5K now and in all that time I've only won twice - £100 and £50. The reason my holdings have reduced is because I just think the return is so terribly poor! I'm making much better returns in a share dealing account instead, just tracking FTSE Global All Cap.

pocketaces · 02/08/2024 13:35

Full holding and only 50 quid this month again. I never get the bigger prizes. Highest ever is 500.

Actually makes me angry every month. Totally irrational I know lol but that's how it is.

Wilma55 · 02/08/2024 13:58

Maximum holding and zilch!

doctorsnoddy · 02/08/2024 13:59

£200 on full holding. I usually win something, quite happy with that

I totally understand
It's a bit of a gut punch
I keep thinking every month I'll get a bigger amount to make up for zero or £25 here and there but nope .

It is indeed! This month I got £200 on FH - this is the most I ever win, and it's usually 25, 50 and quite often 0! So I empathise with all the other FH holders who never win anything decent - it's very difficult not to take it personally and to feel unlucky! Delighted for Blondes though - your ongoing luck is an inspiration!

WandaWanda · 02/08/2024 14:17

50 quid on £45,000 very disappointing

BirthdayRainbow · 02/08/2024 14:27

I'm amazed at how well informed you all are as I haven't taken much notice for years. I'm on about £33k so all prizes are reinvested. My dd once won £1000 but my best month was probably about £250 over 2/3 prizes. I've discovered how to see what I won on the blue app.

flyright · 02/08/2024 15:33

Nothing for me or DD, 40k and 20k.
£300 for DP on 20k.

About average for us as a family. But along with everyone else we live in hope of more.

CheeseNcrackerz · 02/08/2024 16:19

Thanks for all the congratulations! I keep checking the prize app to make sure I haven't been day dreaming!

I was actually thinking of moving away from PBs so pleased I held off. I found a website that tells me how lucky I've been with pb. I've only had a full allocation for about 18 months, and only had pbs at all for maybe 3 years. In the last 18 months I've won just over £12k which of course was mostly this month. Apparently I'm in the top 1% of lucky people so I'm just going to be very grateful and probably splurge on a nice bottle of red tonight.

I intend to do very boring things with my winnings. Whack a bit on the mortgage. My isa is full for the year but my husband's isn't so I'll probably put some in there.

Pleasealexa · 02/08/2024 16:29

@CheeseNcrackerz congrats, delighted to hear of decent wins.

£200 on FH. Happy with that.

Grinchinlaws · 02/08/2024 16:45

Nothing this month on £10,500. Haven’t won anything since April so feeling a little peeved. Could do with it as about to start major renovation works to the house!

Eeepsh · 02/08/2024 17:09

Hello, can I join you please?

I've obviously been very lucky as we have a holding of £6.000 and have won a total of £1,925 (inc £200 this August) which is a % return of about 30%.

It's amazing, obviously, but hopefully I'm not jinxing it!

Ygraine · 02/08/2024 17:37

This is my first post here. I had £2 as a christening present, which I topped up to £20,000 in 2020 after inheriting some money. I had a £25,000 win in 2022 and recently I’ve been winning about £200 per month.

I won £200 in August (2 x £100 prizes) which brings my holdings up to £47,150.

OublietteBravo · 02/08/2024 18:25

Good luck with the renovations. We’re almost finished with ours (having started in February 2023).

pocketaces · 02/08/2024 18:35

In the last 12m my sum of prizes are £1300 less than I would have got with my holding in a savings account. I wonder how much I've lost since I started. Obviously YMMV according to whether you pay tax but I've definitely lost 1300. Its all a big gamble really. Well played to the lucky ones I'm subsidising!!

Welcome

Sounds similar to me - I have a low amount. Lower than yours but seem to so quite well - they must know I do this thread 😂

But it's good to know other low holdings do win

There is another poster who is low like me and wins quite a lot each month

Yet some with £50k win nothing

It is really strange

OP posts:
EwwwwwwDavid · 02/08/2024 19:56

I'm on £750 for the year on £45k
If I just look at my account it's £600 on £39k

Grinchinlaws · 02/08/2024 19:57

Eek @OublietteBravo!!! Ours are meant to take 4 months (loft conversion and remodelling first floor inc new bathroom)…costs an absolute fortune and dreading the upheaval!

hurlyburlygirly · 02/08/2024 20:12

£350 here. That'll help with holiday spends so I'm chuffed

Pleasealexa · 02/08/2024 21:09

@Ygraine wow 25k win. It gives us all hope.

Sending everyone good luck vibes for next month

mechanicalpencil · 02/08/2024 22:23

Congratulations @CheeseNcrackerz
enjoy that wine!

mechanicalpencil · 02/08/2024 22:25

£125 here on about 16k
Very pleased
Well Done to all winners
If you haven’t won this month, there’ s always next month!
