I agree. Nurse’s approach couldn’t be worse. The whole point of therapy, and let’s face it, this is what she is offering, is to put the person at the centre of things and keep your own story, opinions etc out of it. Self-disclosure is something used very sparingly and only to illustrate a therapeutic point. It’s not about YOU Nurse! However, Nurse’s coaching is using other people’s difficulties to shore up her own self esteem; it really is all about her.
She has no training and being a second rate MHN is not a cover-all for dealing with other people’s MH or psychologically testing situations outside her (probably) very specific role in the service she works in. Imagine being encouraged to be positive rather than being helped to build a rational resilience to all outcomes and then IVF not working out. Is she going to tell someone they just didn’t want it enough? Or will she just drop them at the point she can no longer cover up the negative reality with positive statements. She is a self-serving fool.
Thankfully not even her mother is interested anymore so hopefully she won’t get to tinker about with anyone’s mental health.
