Thanks for all valuable contributions everyone.

I'm completing the last part of my application tomorrow (Sun) as that can't affect my tax credits due Mon can it?
Someone at the end of the last thread, iirc, had that kind of timing - but maybe applied on the Friday - and still got their tcs didn't they, as it's too late for the DWP to stop the payment authorisation over the weekend?

You will still get the payment but it will be an overpayment. If you don't want to pay that weeks TC back wait until Tuesday to claim.

Jellykat · 17/02/2024 22:35

I havent been asked to pay mine back @DragonFly98 and it was over 5 weeks ago (and ive had a UC payment)

Allyballybee445 · 18/02/2024 00:34

Quick update on my migration I had my second appointment on Friday 16th on the first appointment in January I had no commitments as I have a health condition and had a fit note and was put on monthly appointments this appointment with a different work coach did not go as smooth.

I was asked about my previous employment and when I last worked I told her I had been an industrial cleaner but due to health issues I had been unable to work for a few years she asked if I had thought about house cleaning as it was not as strenuous I told her that due to my health I found it hard to keep my own house clean she then explained I would have to attend weekly appointments to help me get back to work telling me the process was different from tax credits were I did not have to do anything to receive my payments I went on the defensive and told her at the present time I was unable to even think about going back to work due to my health.

She then called a colleague over who tried to explain the health process to me but I could not really concentrate on what he was saying as there was a security guard pacing up and down behind me I have a cognitive issue which has left me very sensitive to lights sounds and movement.

I managed to take in weekly appointments cv writing and courses and a work coach support health appointment was booked for 26th February she also told me it was my prerogative whether to attend or not but if I did not my payments would be stopped.

A few hours after getting home I had a message telling me this appointment had been cancelled and I now had another work focused interview booked for the 15th March with a different work coach.

I have no idea what is happening and just feel lost and confused by the whole process.

They will call you in for these appointments until you have had your work capability assessment and the result decided. It is at the discretion of the work coach as to how often you are called in and what they ask you to do. You could ask if telephone appointments will be an option. After 29 days of handing in sick notes ( sometimes quicker) you will be sent a UC50 form to complete and after sending that back you will have an assessment done either by phone or at an assessment centre. There are 3 possible outcomes to this. 1, They find you fit for work and you have to go full on job search. 2. they award you LCW meaning they don't think you are fit for work currently but can do some preparations for going back to work- usually meaning some work coach appointments. 3. they award you LCWRA meaning they do not think you are capable of working or doing any work related activities so in effect they will leave you completely alone , you get an extra almost £400 on your Uc claim and can stop handing in sick notes. The whole assessment period can take a while. With so many people migrating over from tax credits who will never have had a work capability assessment I have no idea how they are going to fit all these extra assessment in, they already have huge backlogs of re-assessments that should have taken place since covid and haven't been done. I can see it ending in chaos.

Hi, Having to wait 5 weeks do you get backdated ?

(I don't want an advance)

DyslexicPoster · 17/02/2024 11:58

I just got my migration letter yesterday saying I need to apply by April. Unfortunately I just got my mums inheritance yesterday ( not great timing and I'm already sad she has gone). We have an interest only mortgage and never paid any capital back. Do you think it would be OK to pay down most of the mortgage? Ideally I would have been paying it anyway but couldn't afford to until now and mum's unexpected death.

I think I get a years grace if I don't qualify for UC anyway?

Definitely fine to pay your mortgage

Am not sure what you mean? Your entitlement to UC starts from the date you submitted your application. You have to wait five weeks for the claim to be assessed and awarded, and then you get paid for the period that began on your entitlement start date.

[Backdating specifically refers to a period of time before your entitlement began].

UC is calculated in monthly assessment periods. Your assessment period depends on the date your claim was made, so everyone's period is different. UC is then paid monthly in arrears like a salary.

flutterby1 · 18/02/2024 15:01

Thanks, I guess I'm confused as usually get paid tax credits every 4 weeks so if I'm waiting 5 weeks or do it feels I'm missing out on a week or two of payment from any source.

You are you miss 5 weeks of money that's what the advance is - a loan to cover the missing 5 weeks. It's not comparable to waiting for wages from work because you don't receive any money the month after you stop claiming UC.

It can take months, even over a year for Hmrc to update the dwp re overpayments.

DrCoconut · 18/02/2024 16:34

@Tiptoptum your situation sounds a bit similar to mine. Transition was actually OK. They haven't asked me to change my job or hours. I did have some deducted for my house renovation fund until it got below £6k which wasn't great but I suppose it would have been worse. The issue I'm still trying to solve is that they count expenses payments from work (for essential travel) as income and deduct for it even though I never really see that money as it is spent on what I get it for, in fact I have to submit a claim at the end of the month so there is no way it is possible for it to be misused. My employer insists they shouldn't and they say they do 🤯

Blimey, talk about problems with modern day IT communication sharing, they might as well use a pencil and piece of paper if it can take over a year!
I know DWP have my PAYE figures up to date, as my final TC award review had it on, presumably if i didnt give them the figure, HMRC must have?
Guess i'll have to see what happens... Confused

I work 18th I have a 9 and 12 yr old will I have to up my hours to 30 ? X

DyslexicPoster · 18/02/2024 19:44

I have three kids who get DLA so I didn't go back to work when ds starting SEN school as I was always waiting around his school taxi schedule.

I don't claim job seekers or housing benefit. So will working change going from Tc to UC?

No as a carer you won't have any work commitments.

Jellykat · 18/02/2024 21:39

Its plain to see judging by the amount of confusion and questioning here, that DWP havent explained this whole UC properly to us newbies!

It doesnt help that you cant just pick up the phone and ask, especially when your work advisor (or whoever happens to be replying to queries in your journal) doesnt clear things up for you. Its crap!

Its not been explained well at all. I don't claim UC but as part of my volunteer work I give benefit advice to some clients, and I often recommend this Facebook group, the admins really know their stuff.

Totally agree with this every interaction I have had has been with different work coaches and the advice and information has been inconsistent even to the point were one advisor actually told me I was on the wrong benefits prior to claiming universal credits as I should have been getting housing benefit I had to explain that due to savings I only qualified for child tax credits.
I am still confused as to why my payment due tomorrow is a lot more than I was receiving on tax credits as even though I have queried this I am still to receive an explanation which I understand.

DaffodilsInAJamjar · 19/02/2024 09:58

I really don't understand it either. We have successfully moved from child tax credits to UC and received our first payment this month.

We are receiving UC for 3 children. Does anyone know whether this continues indefinitely on our claim? Or is part of the transitional protection arrangements and therefore only for a year?

If you received TC for three children then you will for UC not related to TP.

I am a single mum of a 10 year old and had to migrate over in September. We have no additional claims for any illness/carers etc, and I work 20 hours a week. It was easy to fill out the form and you can come back to it if you need to. The questions asked are to ensure you get the right entitlement.

I haven’t had to go into the job center or have any calls so I presume those requirements are based on hours/earnings etc.

The hardest thing for me was the change from weekly to monthly but I actually get more money on universal credit. For those saying they wish they never bothered when they are getting money to help them live, baffles me. Please don’t be put off!

Hi did they ask you to
Increase your hours? I work 18 hrs with a 10 and 12 year old. I read with children around those ages you need to work 30 hrs ? Is this correct

Jellykat · 19/02/2024 20:22

Ah thank you @DragonFly98 i'm not on FB though and its a private group.

ThereIsATInWater · 19/02/2024 21:02

Hi All,

I've had the "managed migration" letter through.

I'm trying to work out when is best to do the UC application.
I wondered if anyone could help?

I have a partner , they're paid 4 weekly, as it happens the day after TC currently get paid.
Next PDs are:
22.2
21.3
18.4
I get paid monthly on the 4th of each month.

When would the best time be do it?
Thanks
