Not claiming any special knowledge myself (apart from am about to migrate in next couple of months!), but wanted to keep this going - will post link to the original thread next -) as it seemed to be helping and calming so many people.
Thanks for all valuable contributions everyone.

Sounds likely @Jellykat. Although it "specifically asks if you've lived in care in England, Wales or Scotland"

JanglyBeads · 13/02/2024 22:16

This form is not great. Not enough explanations

Oh, cant be that then Jangly..

I did ring the helpline twice when filling the form, they were useless first time and helpful the second.. you could give them a go though?

JanglyBeads · 13/02/2024 22:33

Maybe I'll have to ring that then yes. How annoying!

Jellykat · 13/02/2024 22:43

It certainly is!
It almost seems like they want to put people off initially, i practically tore my hair out in the beginning and im not an idiot!
Even now, all that calculating figures (self employed) monthly instead of annually, and having to log in, (after remembering to have my phone to hand for a bloody code) every time i get a message, is already pissing me off!

Jellykat · 14/02/2024 16:38

Bloody bloody Universal credit!!!!! Argh!
Just had another form sent through, i'm Self employed and employed, and it wants my monthly figures for my earnings for last 12 months.. no clarification on whether the figures are SE, PAYE or both?
Helpline cant help, im at work tomorrow Mon and Tues..
Why oh why cant they word the bloody questions clearly?
I'm about to tell them to forget it, its too stressful and time consuming, i'm supposed to be working!!! FGS

colouringindoors · 14/02/2024 20:37

oh no @Jellykat that sounds so frustrating. I am about to apply.... dreading it...

Symposium · 14/02/2024 21:33

Just had my migration notice, got to apply by 9th May. I'm going to leave it as near to that date as I can.

TBH its my SE and PAYE and seasonal variations that is complicating things, they dont seem to 'cater' for anything other then bog standard situations.
Unlike TC which was annual and easy.
I'm sure you'll be fine, as long as you dont work in the same way as me.

SackOfShitandRegrets · 15/02/2024 17:40

Got my migration notice, need to apply by 16/04, was thinking of applying in 06/04 as new tax year. Is this enough time?

Going to apply online, how long does it to take to fill in form? Can I start, save and go back to it?

Hopefully can be identified through gateway- got bank statements, driving licence, will I need children's birth certificates?

Jellykat · 15/02/2024 18:30

Yes @SackOfShitandRegrets that'll be plenty of time, good thinking to keep it within a full tax year! and yes im pretty sure you can go back to form...
I'm still waiting for a comprehensible answer for my query, (i had an answer in my journal that didnt clarify, so ive asked again!) popped back into my UC account today and my half filled in questionnaire is where i left it..

Dont think you'll need kids birth certificates at that stage.

Is the information you were asked for specifically related to your self employment as they routinely ask people for their earnings over the past 12 months to see if people are exempt from the benefits cap?

Jellykat · 15/02/2024 19:17

Thanks @Babyroobs Problem is I dont know if its SE figures, or SE and PAYE together that they want, they already know my work is seasonal so goes up and down drastically, i,e probs wont qualify for UC during July August Sept.. I was told i was gainfully Self Employed, so had a years grace period anyway.
Bit confused, but i just need them to tell me WHICH figures they want, which theyre not doing atm Confused

Blossompink · 16/02/2024 13:27

I have a Migration Notice as I am currently on Working Tax Credit but don't want to apply for UC as have savings over the £16K limit, and don't want to apply for the Transitional Protection year.

I have tried phoning them to let them know I won't be claiming but difficult to get through. Does anyone know If I just leave it will my WTC payments just end naturally at the deadline date and I will just receive a summary letter?

Thanks.

It will just naturally end but you don't have to apply for the TP all it means is that your UC will be reduced by £174 a month automatically.

Thanks JellyKat. I have 9 months of seasonal work self employed plus a regular p/t PAYE job so I'm not optimistic!

Jellykat · 16/02/2024 21:02

Good luck @colouringindoors, i still cant complete the questionnaire as ive still had no reply!.. i was managing to navigate through up until now, but now at a dead end.
If/ when i get an answer as to exactly which figures they want, i'll let you know!

I just got my migration letter yesterday saying I need to apply by April. Unfortunately I just got my mums inheritance yesterday ( not great timing and I'm already sad she has gone). We have an interest only mortgage and never paid any capital back. Do you think it would be OK to pay down most of the mortgage? Ideally I would have been paying it anyway but couldn't afford to until now and mum's unexpected death.

I think I get a years grace if I don't qualify for UC anyway?

flutterby1 · 17/02/2024 16:07

?? I work 18 hours. I have a 9 and 12 year old, will I now have to find a new 30 hour job?

Cally70 · 17/02/2024 16:08

I've had a migration letter. I get WTC/CTC paid weekly. So I don't think it matters when I start the process. Am I right in understanding that my Tax Credits will stop immediately and I won't get UC for 5 weeks? I don't understand how I'm supposed to manage for 5 weeks without any benefit? Does it get backdated?

Yes your tax credits claim will stop immediately after you have made your claim for UC. For this reason I plan to make my UC claim within the 24 hours after I've been paid my weekly CTC.

You are expected to request an advance payment of UC to help you through that initial five to six week wait. UC is paid in arrears so you get the advance payment then pay it back via a deduction from your UC award over the next one or two years.

Sorry for your loss. Yes paying off a mortgage or any other debt is not deprivation of capital for UC. ( the rules are different for IS and JSA where you are usually only allowed to pay "bad debt" for explain council tax arrears or bailiff fees not debt that you are not behind schedule in repaying).
As you say you have TP for 12 months and would have your UC reduced by £174 a month if your savings are above £16k

Make sure you wait until the next day or you will have an overpayment of TC.

JanglyBeads · 17/02/2024 19:53

I'm completing the last part of my application tomorrow (Sun) as that can't affect my tax credits due Mon can it?
Someone at the end of the last thread, iirc, had that kind of timing - but maybe applied on the Friday - and still got their tcs didn't they, as it's too late for the DWP to stop the payment authorisation over the weekend?

Jellykat · 17/02/2024 21:57

I did my application on a Weds, but still got my TC come through the following day Jangley
