I am pretty sure that Tax Credits stop once your UC claim is submitted. So, it's not submitted whilst you are filling it all in but once you get to that final "submit claim" button, that's the crucial bit that stops your TCs.

Phew. I didn’t want to do it till 30th as I get paid 26th of the month but sometimes earlier. So figured if my claim runs from 1st - end of month I can never have two pay days in it.

colouringindoors · 26/03/2024 17:08

@Jellykat how are you getting on? My last meeting, my work coach declared me "not gainfully self employed" because my average self employed hours over the year aren't enough. I explaned how my job - gardening - is very seasonal - and work is minimal during Dec - Feb. But I still have to search for work even though my diary is currently at capacity. Felt like a real slap in the face. I explained I'd got a temp job in December at a Christmas market but temp work in Jan and Feb is scarce. Offered Zero help at all in filling the winter gap. WTF. I'm knackered working 3 jobs and studying (plus parenting) and all I get is a "you're not gainfully self-employed".

Jellykat · 26/03/2024 18:46

Oh no @colouringindoors thats a bastard situation! thing is if you took on other work now, it would likely be long term, and you'd have to let clients down and leave all your current work Sad This is the dilemma UC is shouldering us with (as opposed to the annual figures previously used with TC)..
I'm managing to scrape through atm re 'gainfully self employed', but i have my fingers in many pies (8 jobs) and have been told after my TP ends at the end of the year, i will be in the same position as you..
Meanwhile ive put the word out im looking for other work to bulk up my earnings ready for next year.

I'm wondering, have you contacted garden centres in your area? i have a friend who works PT in one atm, getting seedlings potted etc for when the season really kicks in. Its seasonal, but the other way around from us (i.e she leaves come early Summer)

Jellykat · 26/03/2024 18:48

I also wonder if it depends on who your advisor is? i.e mine is very 'chilled'.

colouringindoors · 27/03/2024 12:59

Thanks so much @Jellykat something in a nursery Dec - Feb would be ideal. Never seen anything like that advertised but can have a google...

I'm glad you're managing to get through it. Blimey 8 jobs though! Find out mid April what my UC award will be. Not holding my breath...

Not sure how chilled my work coach is yet. Was ok on phone today when i raised that i haven't got 35 hours free to job hunt a week which is what my commitments were saying!

Jellykat · 27/03/2024 19:13

I'd maybe contact nurseries directly @colouringindoors , i've noticed local jobs are advertised more on personal FB and Websites these days, as opposed to on general jobsites.
Worth a shot?

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 03/04/2024 11:59

Claim submitted! I did it at the start of the tax year in the hopes of avoiding any TC overpayments. Now the long old wait starts! I usually got my TCs weekly so 5 weeks feels an age.

colouringindoors · 05/04/2024 22:49

hurrah. After submitting March's self employed earnings I'm now NOT deemed not gainfully self employed. And will get a UC payment next week. Phew. At least all the horribleness has been worth it.

Surely that's not a good thing to be deemed no gainfully self employed ? Do you mean they have said you have no work commitments? Are you a carer?

Sorry misread your comment.

Hooray @colouringindoors !

Jellykat · 06/04/2024 19:22

Thats great @colouringindoors , what a relief!

colouringindoors · 06/04/2024 20:45

Thank you both 😊

Hi just asking some advice, put our application for universal credit in and have received our first statement, due to be paid later this week.

Our payment is double what we recieved for tax credits over 4 weeks is this correct? We both work, have had housing costs included in the claim - we didn't get housing benefit previously. Dp does get paid 4 weekly so I expected the payment to be slightly higher as we will have one month of no payment when he gets paid twice in the assessment period. There is also a transitional protection element on our statement but this is only just over 10% of the total amount.

FloofyBird · 08/04/2024 10:44

We're simillar @DeathMetalMum got notification of our first payment today and it's double what we got on ctc, although my partner now gets a carers element which is most of it.

Lougle · 08/04/2024 11:19

It's quite possible @DeathMetalMum . It's a bit of a myth that everyone loses out with UC. Our payment went up considerably, but we also have disability elements.

Feel free to put a redacted screenshot of your statement if you want to, but I expect it will be correct.

DeathMetalMum · 08/04/2024 18:27

Thanks, all the information seems to be correct. I've double checked in case there is an error somewhere. We don't have any caring elements or disability elements either. I'm confused why we are receiving transitional protection though.

Our payment is approx £300 a month higher of which £80 is transitional protection on the statement. Why would this be included if our payments have been increased?

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 09/04/2024 09:08

We are also about £300 a month better off on UC which I’m relieved about. We do have a child on high rate DLA and now have the housing element when we didn’t claim housing benefit on tax credits.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/04/2024 12:38

I'm about to apply today (last TC payment was yesterday and I have to apply for UC by 13th April)

I'm on enhanced PIP for daily living and mobility and work self employed part time, but my earnings are low (around £6k per year)

DD has recently been awarded MRC LRM DLA. Am I right in thinking that I can't claim carers element as I'm disabled myself and recieve PIP? I can't look for more work due to DDs circumstances and my own.

If so, will I have to go down the applying for LCWRA route? I asked this a few months ago, but DD wasn't getting DLA then.

You can claim UC caring element, but if you get the LCWRA element, it will pay this (which is higher) not caring.

Transitional protection is based on the elements on tax credits being higher than the same elements on UC before deductions ,rather than simply if your total UC award would be lower. So the elements you have TP for must have been less on UC . Then you got housing added as a separate element which made your UC award higher.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/04/2024 13:36

I've just finished the claim. It asked if I received carers element for DD and I said no as I don't. It also asked if I was a carer and I said yes, to DD who receives MRC.

Do I now put a note in my journal asking if I can claim the UC caring element and advising the date she was awarded?

Thejackrussellsrule · 09/04/2024 16:35

No, you don't need to note it in your journal if you put it in your declaration.

Weedkillerworks · 11/04/2024 08:30

I didn’t think to wait until my TC had gone in to apply for UC and now my expected TcC payment of nearly £800 hasn’t arrived - have I fucked up? I am furious with myself and also have no money now until pay day at the end of April.

From what I’ve read soon as you submit your UC application that ends your Tax Credit payments. You can make a application for an advance payment x
