Thanks @ScoobyBooby I have fucked up and I am furious.

ScoobyBooby · 11/04/2024 15:18

When did you make your application for UC , you might get a payment earlier than you think x

Jellykat · 11/04/2024 18:27

Quarterly review today, and discovered a little gem Hmm

Once the TP year is up, and as a self employed and employed single person.. I either have to support my self each month with no UC or help, or be employed for at least 18 hours a week, give up my business and look for other employed work.

I call that the death of every little self employment business!

I also pointed out that here in rural Wales, i dont know a single person who works full time 12 months a year, apart from our (private) dentists and doctors, oh and staff at the job centre! 🙄

Lougle · 11/04/2024 19:01

@Jellykat if you have no dependents, and are fit and well, what makes you think it's ok to work less than 18 hours per week and rely on benefits? The whole point is that if a little business is viable, it will pay enough to support you (once it is established).

Jellykat · 11/04/2024 19:24

@Lougle Did you not read my last paragraph?
Come Winter ,in our tourist town, hospitality including cafes close, or only open 3 days a week.. there are no holiday bookings, even retailers shorten their opening hours because its so dead.

I DONT rely on benefits thank you, its a tiny top up during the Winter months.. oh and before you suggest i retrain as a nurse or some such, i'm 61.
I also have Osteoarthritis, tendonitis and Raynauds, which means i cant drive anymore, so can only work on bus routes. On bad days i take pain killers to get me through work.. which during the Summer can be 8 hours on my feet.

I sell in 2 galleries and have 6 other part time jobs..
What else would you suggest i do exactly??? eh?

Jellykat · 11/04/2024 19:28

Oh and i'll just point out @Lougle , this isnt a benefit bashing thread, its a thread for people migrating to UC. Thanks!

Lougle · 11/04/2024 19:43

I'm not benefit bashing. We couldn't get by without UC. I'm very open about it. But your post didn't say anything about any of that. It simply said that they had the audacity to suggest that you should work more than 18 hours per week.

Jellykat · 11/04/2024 21:18

Shouldnt've jumped to conclusions aye @Lougle ? I'm very open about my details too..

Its not the case of my saying they had 'audacity' to suggest i work more then 18 hours, you totally misunderstood! - I already do work more then 18 hours a week (including 17 hours employed weekly) from now until September! but its not just employed OR Self employed, its BOTH.. they'll want me to totally give up Self employment and look for more employment, OR go it alone, with no help when its totally dead here... and how do i save enough in the Summer to get me through the Winter with one income paying the bills?

I love my self employment work, its who i am.. and the social life it gives me since my boys' 'fled the nest' is important to me. So giving it up to go work in Aldi full time (if theyd have me) would really affect me mentally..

Do you get it now?? I'd had previous discussions with SE people on here, my earlier post was warning them whats to come in a years time! Confused

Would your Uc be ending because you'll be hit by the minimum income floor after 12 months?

Jellykat · 11/04/2024 21:50

Yep exactly @Babyroobs , and its £1700 a month.. a lot to find living in rural Wales!

SackOfShitandRegrets · 13/04/2024 16:50

Could anyone be so kind to advise expected uc amount, submitted migration from tc to uc on 08/04.

If yes that's fantastic and I'll give earnings etc amid not no worries:))

Only asking has heard benefit calculators can be wrong and different to each other.

SackOfShitandRegrets · 13/04/2024 19:19

Thanks Lougle :))

Couple over 25, 3 kids (all born before 2017), 1 of the children gets DLA (middle care, low mobility) and we get carers allowance for them.

Monthly Wages are £1,811.39 and £321.13 (after tax and ni, pension etc)

No housing costs (mortgage)

Tax credits for fy23/24 was £190.57 pw, got 1 payment of TC in 24/25 (thought submitting UC claim on 08/04 would stop payment on 10/04 but didnt) which was £173.50

Lastly have savings over 16k so appreciate lucky to get UC for 12 months

SackOfShitandRegrets · 13/04/2024 21:14

That's absolutely amazing thank you :)))))))

YourFluentCrab · 14/04/2024 12:23

I've recently migrated, found out there were benefits we were entitled to (didnt know about so not claiming). Better off now on uc.

trickortrickier · 14/04/2024 14:47

@Lougle Lastly have savings over 16k so appreciate lucky to get UC for 12 months.

As OP has savings of over 16k tariff income would also be deducted for the 12 months (40 x £4.35 = £174)

ThatBluntSeal · 14/04/2024 15:04

I just made a thread as didn’t see this one but I’ve just migrated from tax credits have above 16k so unsure what I’ll get until 5/6 weeks. I may get my rent paid though I believe? Do they cover social housing affordable housing ? Thank you

Ah yes, I missed the implication of that. So the final award would be £571..87

JanFebAndOnwards · 14/04/2024 17:12

So what’s tariff income?

OP posts:
trickortrickier · 14/04/2024 17:15

The amount deducted for savings in excess of £6K. Works out as £4.35 for every £250 over £6K

JanglyBeads · 14/04/2024 17:46

Oh yes, thanks

Yes, they should do, as long as you have the right number of bedrooms (ie you don't have spare bedrooms).

thelivingdaylights · 17/04/2024 10:27

I've not long completed the migration and to be honest I'm a wreck. The process seems so complicated. I have no idea what to expect at all, and not sure if I can cope with all the uncertainty and intrusion. Would someone who understands the process be able to give me an idea of what happens?

Self employed working 16 hours per week. As of this month I will be earning £732 each month. I have various health conditions, meaning I can't do more at the moment, and am not able to leave the house without help. I hope that in time I'll be able to increase how much I can work and then escape this system.

Prior to this, was receiving working tax credits of £436 each month

Also receive standard rates of both element of PIP, which was until last month, £380 each month

Adult working child who lives with me currently pays £50 every week

Rent £650 monthly for 3 bed house

Council tax £165 monthly

At the moment I can't physically work any more, but will as soon as I am able. I also can't go out to work. I'm worried that they'll try and make me look for better paying work, and I just won't be able to do that.

Does anyone know what they might do, what they might pay me? How much are they going to question/harass me to do what they want?

You would need to report your health conditions when you make the application, submit sick notes and wait for a work capability assessment. depending on the result of that assessment you may get additional element on your claim and a work allowance if you wouldn't otherwise qualify for one.
As it stands at the moment, if you have no dependent children on the claim you would just get a standard single element and a rent element and then earnings will reduce that amount. If/ when you get awarded either the LCW ( limited capability for work ) or LCWRA element you may start receiving more money as a proportion of your earnings will be disregarded before deductions for earnings take place. You may have transitional protection on your claim from being on tax credits, but if awarded LCW/ LCWRA this could be gradually eroded over time but you should not be worse off. Also as you are self employed, this in itself can be complex until you have the LCW/ LCWRA element in place. I'm not sure if they have any easements etc in place for people on PIP until that LCW or LCWRA can be assessed. Think you are one of those where it could be tricky. You may need extra self employed interview to check you are gainfully self employed. they have really cracked down on this as it seemed a lot of people on tax credits often weren't making much money from self employment but declared themselves working a certain number of hours to get the working tax credits. Not saying this was the case for you, just explaining why there has been a crack down and why on UC they are a lot stricter in making sure self employment businesses are viable. Once you are hopefully awarded LCW/ LCWRA then you have no work commitments when self employed so they wouldn't be so hot on checking how much you are making per hour etc. You will also need to submit self employment earnings monthly, as Uc is calculated monthly rather than annually as tax credits was.
You will need to apply for council tax support unless you already have a claim and they will calculate this based on your Uc award. Some councils might ask you to make a new claim.
