Universal credit managed migration thread

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

Sorry if this has been asked before but what happens if you don't apply for UC? I currently get £0 from TC because of a overpayment so the £9 a week that I was awarded goes towards the overpayment. I actually haven't received anything in 2 years due to this overpayment.

If I don't apply for UC will I just get a letter telling me to pay back the full amount? It seems pretty pointless of me applying and going to the job centre/handling in documents etc since for less than a £10 a week.

I haven't had a letter yet, just want to be prepared.

Bemyclementine · 30/08/2023 16:29

@NewUserName23 you may well receive more UC than TC. If you get a migration letter abd don't apply by the deadline, your TC claim will end. I dont know what would then happen with the overpayment.

I'm not applying for UC when my tax credit stops next month as I am
Expecting a pay rise next month
So won't be entitled to anything anyway. I don't know whether to call or will my claim just end anyway.

Does anyone know will I have to pay back what I've been paid this year if I get a pay rise in October

I would think it would still be based on your income for that tax year. Pretty sure mine was the year I started a claim although it was already partway through the year. Could you just put extra into your pension instead?

EmeraldFox · 30/08/2023 19:11

The appointment was super quick and easy, took about 10 minutes and they were friendly and helpful. It was a bit scary to see at least three security guards!

RavenT · 30/08/2023 19:52

So when you apply is the appointment for ID checks etc?

I had verified mine with my government gateway account already so just had to show my driving licence. It could be to verify savings. It should say on your appointment info.

Thanks, I'm definitely not transferring over to UC. Many moons ago I was on job seekers for a few months and I never want to step foot into a job centre again. I think I'll pay back what I owe in full to get out of the system when I get the letter in. I've been putting money aside to pay them back, since I went self-employed my awards never seem to make sense and I'm now sitting with a overpayment of over £1000.

I'm just now worried that I'll owe even more come next renewal. Or they'll say I was given the cost of living payments by mistake and add that on too!

EmeraldFox · 01/09/2023 15:26

OK, so it seems they reconcile tax credits now, not at the end of the tax year. I was sent a form to send back based on my income from the start of the tax year to the date I claimed UC.

starpatch · 01/09/2023 17:19

Oh that is helpful emerald fox. I have some self employed income so very interested in how that is asked for on the form if anyone has a blank one they could post.

Bemyclementine · 01/09/2023 17:24

I got a TC letter yesterday too, it's just like the normal renewal letter, only for just part of the year.

Is that because of the change to UC

This has made me feel so much better. I am
Due a pay rise in October and my tax credits ends in September so I wasn't going to apply for UC but was worried due to my pay rise in October that when I renewed I would owe them at the end of the tax year. It makes sense of them to do this though.

I claimed UC near the date my migration notice allowed, I assume they would do the same if tax credits just ended but you didn't claim UC but I don't actually know.

BCSurvivor · 04/09/2023 12:55

@NewUserName23 I'm looking for this info too.
I had the letter this morning with a migration date of 1st December.
I'm not going to apply for UC...savings, self employed, I haven't got any overpayment as far as I know, so am wondering if I can just not apply for UC, and claim tax credits as normal until the migration date?

I'm going to be doing this. My migration is supposed to be 20 September. I don't want to claim UC due to a pay rise im getting in October so I'm going to ring tax credits next week let them know I want to end it and not claim UC. I'm hoping I don't have an overpayment due to pay rise this coming November. I'll let you know what they say next week when I call tax credit

Dorrismorris · 04/09/2023 16:09

To those self-employed are you up to date with your year end July figures or have any of you estimated for now(end of Jan for final figures)I'm the latter, still got to get my books to the accountant 😬

Shopper727 · 04/09/2023 17:36

I also got my letter for 1st of December however I do owe them money from previous claims how do they claw that back I can’t make head nor tail of the info on website. I’m single parent 3 kids and one dla I only work 22 hours because of my youngest so stressing they will try to make me work more, am a nurse so wages are ok but can’t afford do not claim worried sick!

Danikm151 · 04/09/2023 19:27

@Shopper727 the amount they expect you to earn is the equivalent of 25 hours x nmw so you should be fine if you’re a nurse. In fact if you are a carer for you child it may be that you don’t have a set amount.
You may find you’re better off on UC. Try and do a benefits calculator to see.

In terms of deductions for overpayments there is a set amount they are allowed to deduct but that will be specified on your statement.

BCSurvivor · 04/09/2023 19:43

@Dorrismorris I'm self employed but I've only done my accounts up to the end of May so far.
I'm going to give actual figures up to 30th November - my migration date is 1st December.

Bemyclementine · 04/09/2023 21:56

I got my statement a day early (yesterday) and payment due Friday.

MansfieldLark · 05/09/2023 21:25

MansfieldLark · 05/09/2023 21:28

No because on UC you would be able to claim carers element which would mean you have no work commitments. You can claim this element even if you earn too much to claim carers allowance. This is assuming no-one else claims carers allowance for looking after your daughter.

MansfieldLark · 05/09/2023 21:40

Great thank you so much. No there is only me. That's way I was having a bit of a wobble.
