Universal credit managed migration thread

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

Not had a letter yet. But on looking at this thread and learning that TC stop the moment you apply for UC then I should apply on a Thursday as I get TC on a Friday. In my job financial transaction are with the bank 24hrs before being actioned. So hopefully I'll at least get that last Friday TC while I figure out what to do.

Is that to prove ID?

Bemyclementine · 13/08/2023 18:47

Yes, proof of ID and proof of bank account.

Rummikub · 13/08/2023 18:51

That’s great thanks. Now I can work out which combo surnames match. I know I should change them all to be the same one.

Bemyclementine · 14/08/2023 18:26

Appointment went well. I took passport, bank statement and corresponding debit card. Payslip for Nino

The advisor told me I'd still get my next TC payment. I queried this, she spoke to a colleague who didn't know.

I asked if I did get the TC payment, then presumably my first UC payment (due 8th sept) would only be a part payment. She said no it would be for the month. Soooo who knows??

Danikm151 · 14/08/2023 21:34

@Misshowe I work 37 hours.

Hi all. Quick update on my migration journey if it helps anyone.
Finally, after just over 5 weeks of responding to the migration notice, losing 5 weeks of CTC (!), and two summons to the job centre...I finally received my first UC payment today!
Despite having a large amount of savings I'm allowed the transition year, but a big old chunk is deducted from the UC payment (fair enough I suppose). And as a carer claiming Carers Allowance I don't have to look for work (but this also gets deducted from my payment). My small amount I earm from self employment just has to be noted each month. I'm basically getting a few quid more than CTC.
It's only for a year, but i'm glad I talked myself out of NOT applying.
Tbh, everyone i've dealt with has been very nice, just brace yourself for the stupid length of time it takes.
Good luck everyone x

Rummikub · 17/08/2023 22:18

Thanks for the update. Glad it’s finally sorted. And your better off!

What happens with the 5 week gap? Is that plugged by your last payment of the year as it’s paid in arrears?

Bemyclementine · 17/08/2023 23:41

@Rummikub at my appointment I was told my payment period was from the date of my claim (2nd August I think) I will get notification on the 4th Sept how much I'll get, payment on 8th Sept. And the same each month..

Rummikub · 17/08/2023 23:48

Oh ok- so maybe it dies cyber that 5 week gap. I hope!

i wonder if they’re calling everyone into the job centre?

Babyroobs · 17/08/2023 23:50

Uc is paid in arrears so no-one is missing out on any tax credits, you just have to wait five weeks to get them. If this puts people in financial distress then there is the option to take the Uc advance payment to tide you over.

A friend of mine didn’t have to go in. Hers was all done online. This was in April this yr.

Hi

Ive recently had the letter to migrate me from working tax credits and child tax credits to UC.

However, ive got savings over £16000, so i will be considerably worse off.

Is there any way of appealing against the migration and to stay on tax credits?

I'd say no.

Universal Credit is replacing Tax Credits which were closed to new applicants nearly five years ago. Migration is the process by which that is achieved.

Rummikub · 25/08/2023 17:38

Thanks Sherrycat. I hope that’s the case for me too.

I got a reminder letter to apply by end September. If I get my wages paid last working day of the month then is there a best time to apply?

Thanks for your reply.

I see tax credits will cease to exist in 2029, hence my query.

I'd imagine HMRC look to see who has savings and who is on tax credits and transfer the across, to save the taxpayer some money.

IMHO tax credits should never have been created, they've created a society where people will only work part time and expect others to work full time to top up their coffers!

As a director a a ltd company i merely paid myself tax threshold and put anything above into my SIPP once i became aware they existed and i was able to claim circa £6.5K in tax credits.

Tax Credits have too many sweet spots and cliff edges.

They're also far too easy to screw up if information gets lost or people fail to report it.

Friend on mine is being pursued for around £20k overpaid. She says she completed a review and reported she was no longer a SAHM. HMRC say - no trace.

Single123 · 26/08/2023 00:00

Yes the problem with the govt being in control of your finances is they can then destroy you should they choose.

All tax credits have managed to do is make mothers aware they'd be better of (financially speaking) by separating from the father, and allowing the state (ie other taxpayers) to provide for them, thus creating more broken homes .... they've destroyed the nations work ethic with people only willing to do 16 hours .... got working people like myself who earn a decent money playing the system, by only paying themselves tax threshold and sticking £40k into a SIPP ..... and provided the masses with free money to buy Chinese made tat they don't really need.

Oh and it was predominantly put on the nations credit card, so our children and the unborn have to pay it all off.

Not to mention the fact its like winning the lottery for immigrants who arrive with kids.

.... and finally it means someone who does work fulltime in an above average paying job, is worse off than someone with a kid or 3 who claims benefits, meaning the worker funding the free money tree can't afford to have kids or buy a house!

Its like the govt/civil servants watched the movie Idiocracy and used it as a guide on how to create the UK's society.

We lived in better and more honest times, when parents merely got family allowance, and there was sweet FA in the house in the run up to shopping day.

RavenT · 29/08/2023 13:47

Hello, just found this thread, thank you all. I've received my migration notice letter today.

Sorry if this has been asked, but when is it best to apply?

My deadline is 23rd November. I assume a couple of weeks before then?

TIA

starpatch · 29/08/2023 15:32

Hi RavenT, still waiting for my letter here thank goodness. the consensus seems to be that when you apply will start the monthly period that your claim goes over. You don't want the end of your claim period to be close to when you are paid, in case you get two pay packets in one month. So apply at least a week away from the date (s) you get paid. Within that I am going to leave it as late as I can. Hope it goes well

Rummikub · 29/08/2023 18:15

Oh so if I get paid 27th month then I should apply for UC a week before then?

Bemyclementine · 30/08/2023 08:15

Morning, quick update, I did not get a payment if TC after applying for UC. I wasn't actually expecting to, but was told both over the phone and at my appointment in person, that I would, so be aware. I applied a few days after my tax credits were paid (4 weekly) and should get the 1st UC payment 5 weeks and a few days after applying. They do tell you when your payment will be, but I won't find out how much til 4th Sept (payment on 8th)

According to the online calculators, i will be £200 a month better off but I'm not convinced!
