Universal credit managed migration thread

1000 replies

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

Some really useful information on this thread with regard to the transitional protection for those with savings over 16k, thanks PPs for sharing that.

Does anyone know if the transitional protection applies to work requirements too? As I understand it, you are expected to earn (or be looking to earn) 37x min wage/week? I currently work 20hrs at a little over min wage, it's a term time only contract but salaried over 12m. I would probably have been looking for more work in the next few years but ideally not yet. I will probably struggle to get a 2nd job to fit around my current hours so I'd likely be looking for a totally new position, but am loathe to be forced out of a stable and secure job where I have full employment rights into something less stable and where I'd not have any employee protection.

Ramdogs · 01/08/2023 19:31

@blueripple The transitional protection applies to the amount paid only. It does not apply to the work requirements.

If you are not earning 'hours x minimum wage' for your circumstances then you will be required to be looking for more hours /alternative employment that does meet the minimum. There isn't any grace period on this as far as I know. The transitional protection is to stop people being worse off, it isn't to stop people needing to increase their income through employment.

blueripple · 02/08/2023 12:47

Thanks @Ramdogs that's how I had understood it 😕 However, doing some more reading this morning I found this on turn2us which suggests that as long as my monthly salary is over £677 (it is) then I won't be required to look for/be available to work but may have to do some 'activities'....is this right in your experience?

If you are working as an employee but are earning less than your earnings threshold, you might be expected to do some activities at the jobcentre. As long as you are employed and have household earnings of more than £677 per month (if you are single) or £1083 per month joint income (if you are a member of a couple), you won’t be expected to look for work or be available for work. This does not apply to income that comes from self employment or income from other sources such as pensions. You might still be asked to take part in activities to increase your chances of getting a job.

As I said, I'd probably be looking to increase my earnings fairly soon but in the current economic climate the fact that I have a job I love that is also about as secure as a job can be, is worth quite a lot.

Thank you for all the information on this.
I've had a Google to see which areas are being rolled out from working/child tax credits to UC. Its mentioned a few areas and counties but no order of future ones.
I don't suppose anyone knows? I'm south west Northants.
My son is 16 in September so I will be naturally coming off TC soon but awaiting that brown letter with anticipation and dread as I'm self employed. Thanks

Danikm151 · 02/08/2023 20:46

@spacechimp79 I work full time and get UC. I’ve never set foot in a job centre.
i had a security call 2 years ago because I didn’t show Id in person and occasionally get a message saying if I want extra support to improve my skills to get in touch.

Rummikub · 02/08/2023 20:52

What kind of extra support is there?

Bemyclementine · 02/08/2023 21:16

@Barleymilk I'm in Norfolk, got the letter a couple of weeks ago.

Bemyclementine · 02/08/2023 21:17

Well, I've just done my claim, seemed very simple snd I haven't been asked to provide any documents. It did say it couldn't use my government gateway account to confirm identity but when I looked in the journal section it showed as Confirmed.

I will get a call in 2 or 3 days....

spacechimp79 · 02/08/2023 21:18

Phew @Danikm151 that’s good to hear! Obviously I’ll be fine to go in for the initial appointment if necessary. Thanks for letting me know.

spacechimp79 · 02/08/2023 21:21

You’ve gone for it quickly then @Bemyclementine Glad to hear it wasn’t too arduous. Let us know how the call goes if you can. My deadline is 20th September so think I’ll do it when the kids go back to school.

Bemyclementine · 02/08/2023 22:36

@spacechimp79 well, when I realised I wouldn't be any worse off (at least for 12monrhs) and i might even be better off (according to "entitled to") I thought I might as well get on with it.

catrescuelady · 03/08/2023 03:30

What happens is you are a carer and claim carers allowance along with working part time ?

You'll be put into the ‘no work-related requirements group’ and receive £185 Carers Credit.
I'm in the same position (but self employed) so have to see a work coach tomorrow as part of my application. I'm hoping it's just a formality but am sure they'll deduct some money from me.
Will let you know how it goes.

Carers allowance is deducted in full from your monthly UC.
In addition to your standard element, rent element ( if you rent ), kids elements etc, you will get the carers element of £168 a month added into your total UC.
Part time earnings will reduce your total UC but if you don't earn a lot and you have a work allowance ( you will if you have kids on the claim ), then the deduction may not be a lot if you are earning under the carers allowance earnings threshold.

Dorrismorris · 03/08/2023 10:22

Wondering what's happens if you haven't given in your final figures with being self employed. I don't need to give final figures in until the end of January, I've given estimated as usual until later in in the year. This is for the previous and current year based on this.
I wouldn't be eligible for UC because my income is under the minimum wage due to stuffing my pension with savings.
So if I get called before April next year looks like I will be paying back this year's payments.
Before anyone bash's me you are allowed to put into a pension up to your income. Yes probably privileged to be able to do so, but I want be getting a full UK pension so looking after myself.
I won't be faffing around with UC would only get them for the trans yr if that

Bemyclementine · 03/08/2023 14:03

I've had a message on my online account today- ihave an appointment next week to take some documents in. I can't make it as going away for a few days, so I sent a message to say so, and got a response within minutes with a new appointment fir the following week. Very efficient!

MarthaJonesPhone · 03/08/2023 19:58

I wonder if anyone can help, apologies if this has come up before.

I've just looked on my dashboard and the amount is for only one month. I may have totally misunderstood when the Job Centre explained to me. They said that I would receive a payment for July and August.

I've messaged them but they haven't got back to me.

Feeling seriously anxious as they've also deducted my carers allowance as well.

Uc is only ever paid for one month unless they have agreed to backdate it which is very unusual. Is it a new claim I presume?

One month at a time I should say.

MarthaJonesPhone · 04/08/2023 19:57

Thank you for replying, it was a managed migration.

Babyroobs · 04/08/2023 23:34

MarthaJonesPhone · 04/08/2023 19:57

Thank you for replying, it was a managed migration.

It will just be for one month then. I assume you got whatever benefits you were previously claiming paid up to the day you made the Uc claim. I've never heard of anyone being paid two months unless for some reason like being in hospital they were delayed in being able to claim and they allowed it due to be backdated due to exceptional circumstances.

MarthaJonesPhone · 05/08/2023 18:06

Thanks, I must of misunderstood.

I was told that I wouldn't miss a month. What they didn't say was its paid in arrears. So yes I do miss a month, they just call the August payment the July payment.

Misshowe · 12/08/2023 09:40

I think everyone will get the transitional protection if your sent the managed migration notice letter
