I've just signed up for Rev, and am just wondering how invoicing works?
New to all this and know that you're meant to keep records and such for tax purposes (HMRC and all that), but how do you get an invoice for your rev work? I'm so confused by this side of it all! Please help!

Redcrayons · 04/02/2023 07:07

You don’t invoice Rev, they auto pay you every week.

I keep track of all income in a spreadsheet so don’t have invoices for everything.

Vicky1110 · 04/02/2023 07:11

@Redcrayons Thanks for the reply! Do you not have to submit invoices to HMRC (if you're in the UK) for tax/NI stuff? (I don't dream I'll make enough to pay tax but because you have to be self employed don't you have to declare it all?)

Redcrayons · 04/02/2023 07:22

You have to do a self assessment to declare everything you earn but you submit your total income figure rather than individual amounts. (Same with expenses).

You don’t submit invoices to them, or any other supporting documents.

bananamuffin99 · 04/02/2023 08:57

Has anyone else been given a new login for potato recently? I received it and it is so slow compared to the regular log in and moderation :(

Vicky1110 · 04/02/2023 09:04

@Redcrayons Thank you for that. I thought you'd have to submit every invoice and everything to them.

Do they not sometimes ask to see it all though? (I've heard horror stories)

PoseyFlump · 04/02/2023 09:50

@Vicky1110 you need to keep any paperwork you have for, I think, 7 years but it's very unlikely you'll be audited for a small amount of side income. Think of it like a bank account. You need to account for every penny going in and every penny going out. Keep a spreadsheet of who paid you what when. For prolific for example you have all the info you need in the 'submissions' section if you want to make a note and tally it up with your withdrawals.

Vicky1110 · 04/02/2023 13:32

@PoseyFlump so literally just keeping a list on excel of who, when and how much is fine? I was clearly trying to make things much harder for myself 😂 Thank you!

@Vicky1110 yes, pretty much. If you do have any invoices etc it's worth keeping them as proof but as Redcrayons said, you add up everything coming in (that you were paid) and everything going out (any expenses you had, although these will be minimal) to come to a final figure. Perhaps you were paid a total of £500 for transcription work during the year and bought some headphones for £20 so your final figure (profit) will be £480.

justalittlebitextra · 06/02/2023 08:46

Ap* is deader than a dodo at the moment for me. At this rate, this will be the first month in 18 months where I haven't earned a thing from them.

My regular project is paused and there is next to nothing else to apply to. Very frustrating all round.

ruralwanderer · 06/02/2023 12:37

@justalittlebitextra do you have any other work keeping you ticking over or is Appen your main earner?

OP posts:
justalittlebitextra · 06/02/2023 13:18

@ruralwanderer I work 3 mornings a week, but that looks like my hours are going down from next month as well - sigh.

I know we all know that places like Ap* aren't guaranteed work, but it is all too easy to get used to it (especially when you were on a decent earning project for a few months).

ruralwanderer · 06/02/2023 14:08

Have you updated all of your profile information in Appen to make sure that you're being shown all relevant projects? I hope something new comes up for you on there soon to fill the gap!

App is a barren wasteland for me too now!

Has anyone done any transcription with a UK agency that is named for one of the Pogues? The reviews are glowing and everything looks excellent but I'm just wondering if anyone here has some real experience of them. I suspect my typing speed might be too slow but I'm considering attempting the assessments anyway.

SomersetDreams · 08/02/2023 20:01

To the person asking about App work and others interested- Roamler has some well paid jobs with a Heineken campaign just increased to £17 from £14 and there are loads everywhere. You have easy to follow instructions and speak to the decision maker at the pub/venue and try to sign them up to a free opt in/ opt out 2 for 1 campaign running throughout the year. Its a short sales pitch and you dont need experience. If yu have a car you can whizz round and it saves time. They are not paying me to promote it I just have been doing these sign ups.
Good luck to anyone who gives it a go

Maybe look at reviews again. I've found some not so glowing ones complaining about paying for DBS checks and earning as little as 50p an hour once they have spent time formatting the text etc. The company reply was 'if you can't fly a plane, don't apply to be a pilot'. I guess it's a suck it and see situation. I know I'm a fast typist but I've struggled to earn a good hourly wage with some transcription companies so I'm seeing red flags here in case they are of the same ilk. Let us know how you get on if you apply!

I've just been added back to my favourite App** transcription project but there's no work 😩

8DPWoah · 09/02/2023 08:40

Oh totally, I'm just finding there's no high value work coming through my current place (and not a huge amount of work full stop) so the hourly rate on the basic files is dire, these guys seem to pay the standard quick turnaround rate but with more consistent flow of work, from what I'm inferring. I can't type any quicker either way so may as well get files with better ppm 😂

PoseyFlump · 09/02/2023 17:38

Yeah definitely. Always worth a shot! I don't mind the hourly rate being slightly less if the files have an interesting topic. Some corporate ones are soooo boring! 😂

8DPWoah · 13/02/2023 10:25

SO

My income from this work has gone so low, and my job search for something that fits around preschool hours with no wraparound is going so well that I have an appointment for JSA this week (I didn't think I'd have the NICs for it but it would appear I just about do.

Had anybody else experienced this? I'll be able to apply for jobs needing more hours to start in Sept (likely school jobs) as eldest will be able to go to breakfast and after school club, and the little one will go to nursery (which she could now, she isn't the barrier). I'll actually be slightly better off, based on recent months, putting my typing time into job applications!

Any sage words on JSA would be appreciated but essentially I plan to to tell them about my temporarily very limited working hours due to childcare restrictions and hope that if I apply for the few jobs that I would feasibly be able to do that are school hours to accommodate DD1, and would also not be swallowed up entirely by nursery fees for DD2, I'll be ok? If any of those jobs actually come off then so much the better but I'm struggling to even get interviews at the moment as these sorts of jobs seem to be incredibly competitive, for obvious reasons. I guess I will have to stop my freelance bits, for what they are worth, that could be a bit of a headache for picking them back up in future.

Miltoned · 13/02/2023 13:38

Thank you to everyone who has shared links in here. I've trying to find new f/t work and am hoping to make some cash in the meantime. I'd particularly love to do some website testing but I can't see any jobs available at the moment. I guess it depends on people's profiles as to whether they'll choose me or not?

SolitaryMind · 13/02/2023 17:42

I'm having no luck anywhere atm. Literally no work on WWW for me, I log in daily and always zero jobs. Nothing on the new transcription project for ap**

Can someone give me more details on the search sciences work? I understand it's writing and research, I used to do a little copywriting for a retailer but I'm certainly not a writer!

8DPWoah · 13/02/2023 21:02

I'd love to know what's going on with WWW, do you remember getting emails pleading for anyone to pick up a bit of extra work when it was the old system? Very odd.

SomersetDreams · 13/02/2023 22:35

Anyone tried Roamler or had success with it?

Bobsyouruncleand · 13/02/2023 23:22

@SomersetDreams i have just downloaded it and tried a quick Boots task. No idea if all jobs will be paid as I read they can be a bit funny with some photos but this one was paid and took a minute to take them. It’s not going to make us rich though and with the jobs being out and about, you have to factor in fuel costs if you drive there and also the time of that. I will probably only do them when I’m going to be near the shops anyway.

Only issue I had was when trying to enter my PayPal details, it kept freezing and wouldn’t save it. I persevered and after 3 days, it worked and allowed me to withdraw straight away.
