How much do you spend on a coffee per day/ per week?

Only recently became a coffee drinker, mostly just at home to accompany DP. Went along on the coffee run at work and it's cost me £4.50 for a standard sized coffee. Good grief. I've been taking packed lunches as to not spend ~£3-3.50 each day buying lunch. Most people I work with do at least 1 if not 2 coffee runs each +/- buying lunch. Is this standard and I've just lived a sheltered life?!

Normally nothing as we have tea and coffee provided at work and there are coffee machines that you can bring pods from home for. This week I am spending €3.20 as I am working later in the day and the coffee shop is open when I am passing.

Based on all these comments that everyone always brings in their own coffee it's a miracle there are any coffee shops left!!

Yeah these threads always bring out the competitive element on MN to be the "zero spend" person but in real life I know loads of people who buy coffee out (whether sit-in or take away) and there are several coffee shops/stops in my area who are all doing absolutely fine!

maddy68 · 27/09/2022 12:02

I drink a coffee in a cafe every day. But I live in Spain I spend €6 a week !

Milesty1 · 27/09/2022 12:04

Treat myself once or twice a week at around £3-4 per coffee - I always use reward cards and take my reusable cup for extra stamps, so I get free coffee now and then. Pret have a scheme where you pay a membership and it’s 5x coffees/teas a day so maybe they do that?!

BoilingFrogsEverywhere · 27/09/2022 12:04

£4.50 a week. I meet my friend and it's the only time I drink coffee (normally a tea drinker). I wouldn't spend £4.50 on a takeaway coffee but the experience of sitting in a nice cafe with a friend makes £4.50 an absolute bargain. It's one of my favourite times of the week!

Milesty1 · 27/09/2022 12:06

Also - order a ‘dirty chai’, not often on the menu but it’s a chai latte with a shot of coffee, changed my life! They will usually do it, even if not on menu 😊

Pukka coffee is essential on a night shift so about £20 a week but then I don't drink or pay diminutive Vietnamese girls to muck-about with my fingernails.

What a horrible thing to say about hard working people in the beauty industry.

If you’re going to be racist disdainful, you should educate yourself on why there’s such a history of Vietnamese woman working in nail salons.

Fatballs · 27/09/2022 12:15

Whatever a bag of ground coffee costs. I rarely buy it out. Usually when I am on a long journey.

Scarecrowrowboat · 27/09/2022 12:17

About £10 a week which is 3 good flat whites. I'd cut back on food and heat before I'd cut back on good coffee.

girlfriend44 · 27/09/2022 12:25

Nothing they are a rip off.

gogohmm · 27/09/2022 12:30

£1.50 once a month for a bag of coffee for the weekend (cafetière) occasionally buy one out but can't remember last time maybe every 2 months unless on holiday (that doesn't count, drank coffee daily in Italy, cost €1.50)

gogohmm · 27/09/2022 12:32

I do occasionally get a latte and sausage bap from greggs though - £2.50 for both

evilharpy · 27/09/2022 12:37

I work from home, and just buy bags of coffee and use an aeropress. I very rarely bother buying coffees out unless I'm going for a coffee with a friend or have to sit and wait for something like a kids birthday party, but would very rarely get a takeaway coffee.

I don't begrudge paying for coffees but it's just not a habit I've got into.

DameHelena · 27/09/2022 12:37

Whereabouts are you? I'm in London Zone 2 and £4.50 seems a lot. Round here a flat white/latte etc from a good artisan coffee shop is about £3.30–£3.40. Alternative milks are 30p or 40p more, but you can offset that by using a keepcup for a discount. Some also have a loyalty scheme and I've earned a few free coffees from those.

We also have a Costa and a Pret; I don't know the prices for those but assume they're a little cheaper than indies.

Personally, I work at home so never actually need to buy coffee out. I do though, because I like having a proper flat white made for me/I like to support indie cafes/I enjoy the routine of going out first thing for a walk, a coffee and a quick chat with the barista (they're all lovely round here).
I don't do it every day, more like twice a week, so I suppose I spend about £7 a week. I know it adds up, but I don't drink or smoke, so I figure it's my little treat. One of our locals also really stepped up during the pandemic, community-wise, so I want to carry on supporting them, especially as I think the immediate future is looking quite bleak for a lot of little businesses.

Stupid question, but does a chai latte contain tea with caffeine? If so, does a dirty chai have both caffeinated tea and caffeinated coffee? Doesn't it taste strange?

somewhereovertherain · 27/09/2022 12:40

free Greggs coffee from o2 is the extent of my coffee purchasing on a regular basis

TokyoTen · 27/09/2022 12:42

Since WFH I have cut out all bought coffees, I just use of coffee maker with beans. It has honestly saved a fortune!

StClare101 · 27/09/2022 12:42

Yep it adds up but it makes me happy. I don’t spend a lot on things other people do. Each to their own.

Wheretheskyisblue · 27/09/2022 12:44

I drink 3 nespressos a day which works out at £1.17 per day, £36 per month or £427 a year

OldTinHat · 27/09/2022 12:46

Coffee??? 🤢🤮

MinervaTerrathorn · 27/09/2022 12:47

Mine costs £2.39 for 200g and I use two teaspoons a day

C1N1C · 27/09/2022 12:47

Thermos?

BrimFullOfAsher · 27/09/2022 12:48

For high street chains, Nero is my favourite with Starbucks my least favourite.

I usually get a flat white but if I'm at an independent coffee shop with nice beans I'll have a black coffee (Americano or filter/whatever)

I have Nespresso at home which is AMAZING

Bestcatmum · 27/09/2022 12:50

I don't waste money on buying coffees, I don't like costa and all of those types of brands, they taste revolting.
I am a complete pleb and only like instant. "Proper" coffee always tastes a bit sour and much too strong.

SirChenjins · 27/09/2022 12:51

Nothing on a regular week - I limit my caffeine to one cup a day (😇) and make it at home the way I like it. Obviously I’ll buy a coffee if I’m meeting friends though, that would be a bit weird.
