How much do you spend on a coffee per day/ per week?

Only recently became a coffee drinker, mostly just at home to accompany DP. Went along on the coffee run at work and it's cost me £4.50 for a standard sized coffee. Good grief. I've been taking packed lunches as to not spend ~£3-3.50 each day buying lunch. Most people I work with do at least 1 if not 2 coffee runs each +/- buying lunch. Is this standard and I've just lived a sheltered life?!

Oh at weekends I do tend to splurge on takeaway teas/coffees when out and about (walking) but I factor these into my days.

I have loads of loyalty cards for independent cafes but ensure I get them stamped as they do add up. I went to the Cutty Sark at the weekend and got a few stamps for Benugo coffees there.

£5 in the supermarket to last the week and I consider that a little luxury since DHs tea costs a tenner every couple of months...

For commuters etc the Pret subscription model looks quite good value though... £25 a month for up to 5 a day.

Five a day?! You’d never sleep!

Minikievs · 27/09/2022 10:02

Mostly zero. Although I do occasionally have a coffee whilst kids are at activities etc. Or if I've (rarely) taken them out for a milkshake etc.
I drink about 8 cups a day but it's all instant (at home, or free at work)
It boggles me how people can spend £4 a day on one drink Shock

maximist · 27/09/2022 10:05

I drink lots of instant coffee at home, if I'm going out I'll take some in a travel mug, which stays hot all day. I only buy coffee out very occasionally, usually if I'm meeting a friend. A jar of instant costs about £6, and lasts about a month.

Hyperion100 · 27/09/2022 10:11

I'm a coffee addict.

I spend a what might be considered a lot on fancy coffee beans (£10 a week) and have a home and office french press but I never buy coffee out as I think it mostly tastes terrible so dont feel so bad about it.

StaunchMomma · 27/09/2022 10:27

If your boss is ok with it I'd suggest your team chip in for a dolce gusto machine and then split monthly costs for cappuccino/americano/latte/hot choc pods etc.

A machine with 4 boxes of starter pods is usually around 80 quid - that's less than what just 4 of you are paying p/week for a daily coffee run.

When you add up the cost over time it's more than a bit ridiculous, isn't it?

Sunshineandrainbow · 27/09/2022 10:29

Once a month when working the weekend I will buy a chai latte as a treat. Struggle to recreate this at home.

beingsunny · 27/09/2022 10:33

I go to the office once a week so always buy a coffee when I arrive, I probably have two or three more from local cafes a week when working from home.

A coffee in a cafe is around $4.50, plus I buy and grind my own beans for home coffee which is around $25 for 500g.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 27/09/2022 10:33

We just make coffee at home. Zero spent on coffees outside the home. Learned about the 'latte factor' a long time ago

devildeepbluesea · 27/09/2022 10:35

I might have a coffee out once every few months.

I have an aeropress and also use good instant for my significant addiction at home.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 27/09/2022 10:35

I spend about £3 a week on Nescafe flavoured coffee sachets and see that as an extravagant outgoing.

YumYummy · 27/09/2022 10:38

I spend about £20/£25 per week in coffees out. £9 ish of that is a meet up with a friend, she drives and I get the coffee and we enjoy a couple of lovely hours together. I usually get a weekly one when I go to the cinema. The others are if I’m out shopping or doing a costal walk
etc.
I am not going to cut down, I enjoy them.

AriettyHomily · 27/09/2022 10:38

£4.50?! Christ, I've not been in the office for ages but that is steep, I wouldn't pay it on principle and I'm a bit of a coffee snob. My local coffee shop is £3.25 for an americano.

silentpool · 27/09/2022 10:42

I have an espresso machine at home and buy beans every couple of weeks. I rarely have coffee out, except socially as it adds up quickly.

CirreltheSquirrel · 27/09/2022 10:42

At home I have a bean to cup machine so buy beans for that.

At work there is a bean to cup machine I don't need to buy beans for. I'm always astonished at the number of people who still go out to get a takeaway coffee from the coffee van that parks outside when we have good free coffee inside.

I do buy coffee if I'm out and need a sit down, or having lunch out etc. But it's part of a trip out rather than just spending on coffee for the caffeine fix.

vera16 · 27/09/2022 10:44

Nothing. I don't have the patience to wait 15 mins in the Costa queue to pay 3 quid for an average cup of coffee. Why are people happy to stand in these queues? It is a mystery to me.

Calandor · 27/09/2022 10:47

I only treat myself to it once a week. Costs about £4.50 for an iced macchiato. Delicious though.

If I need more in the week I get a filter coffee - 99p.

Jackienory · 27/09/2022 10:52

Pukka coffee is essential on a night shift so about £20 a week but then I don't drink or pay diminutive Vietnamese girls to muck-about with my fingernails.

SouperNoodle · 27/09/2022 10:52

I buy around 2 Costa lattes a week

What was the point of the last nasty comment?

flowerycurtain · 27/09/2022 10:57

Based on all these comments that everyone always brings in their own coffee it's a miracle there are any coffee shops left!!

MotherWol · 27/09/2022 10:57

For those on O2, you can get a free Greggs coffee with the O2 priority app - it used to one Caffe Nero a week but now I think it's one Greggs a day.

beanyl · 27/09/2022 11:01

It was a nice treat but I won't be rushing to get another. As I say, I'm new to drinking coffee and feels good to almost feel included/ join in with the social side of it. All my life till date I thought I didn't like the taste of coffee/tea (I didn't and I'm not sure what's happened for now starting to enjoy it). I will continue to get coffee out - I guess its not much different to getting a pint/beverage of choice on a Friday night but I'll probably limit it to the days of the week I work with company I particularly like so maybe twice a week, £9. I can afford it and it feels like a nice treat. Not something I plan to do long-term at all.

Any coffee recommendations from any coffee chain? I've tried a chai latte (I know, not coffee) and spiced pumpkin latte, both lovely!

thanks for that, my DH has O2.

SleepingAgent · 27/09/2022 11:54

About £6 a week on average. I meet a friend for a catch-up every week, we go to a nice little coffee shop and have 2 coffees (roughly £3 each) while we chat. And likely a scone or something as well.
I don't drink or go out in the evening much so it's well worth it to me. It's less than a bottle of wine. And very enjoyable.

Other trips out I'll take a coffee from home in a flask.
Occasionally DH and I will go for brunch on the weekend with coffee but that's accounted for in our monthly food budget anyway.
