To be concerned at dh wanting to drop down in wages?

Aibu to be upset that dh is considering going for a promotion which would mean he would lose his shift allowance of approx 20k.

The new job he has been asked to go for is a days position (current position is 4days on and 4days off) in lower management. He wants to go for it as he has just completed a diploma in management and is very proud as it was his first stab at third level education. I am v proud of him too but aibu to be concerned at a 20k drop. More of a wwyd really. I can't and won't stop him but I guess I'm just concerned with the way things are right now.

@Frenchfancy no not really, I work days myself and I'm on track with my goals. I suppose it gives us every weekend to do things.

Ah I am so so proud of him, he literally never went to college before so doing the diploma was a BIG thing for him!

It probably represents an actual deduction of around 12k, once the reduced tax/ni etc is factored in.

Maybe he wants daytime hours & it may lead to further promotions. Maybe he can also use it as a bargaining tool. I can't see the sense in the manager earning so much less than his team.

You might find tax/pension would be less so it evens out.

It's such a big drop in salary, I just wondered if it was recuced hours and he could get some other work on top.

I guess it's up to you to make up any shortfall but every family runs differently.

If he's completed a diploma, and this next role is a promotion..... Surely that means it will be a stepping stone into higher positions, and therefore wage? Isn't this a 'speculate to accumulate' situation?

And surely the step up/ challenge has value too?
If he's on 60k, and you earn too, surely you can take a small hit to increase his future prospects, and his current job satisfaction?

Yes,his wage will increase year on year, it's the seer organisation so all employees get get a 2-5% raise annually (performance dependant!) there's plenty of scope for further promotions. @MichelleScarn of course he did, as I have supported him. I am still allowed to be concerned at a 20k drop. @spotcheck I'm sure we can take it but with everything rising the way it is, it's making me slightly uneasy. We have a new mortgage etc (no other debts though!)

deborahdoo it is still a big drop. I can see why you are concerned. £80k is a great salary (loads more than either me or DH earn as teachers). I think maybe your salary is relevant as if you were say PT on £12,500 then it would be harder than if you're earning £40k in a professional job.

I don't think the small annual increase would be worth much. It would need to be expected that there might be a promotion in the future to make it worthwhile.

If you're management you ultimately have to take more responsibility and usually are paid more for this reason.

@converseandjeans yes he would/could move up again after a few years in the new role.
I'm not a low wage as I'm in 38k. I need to do a few more years in my current role to be able to move up too...do it would be a while before we recoup it.

Wow. What job pays £80K for 4 days on, 4 days off, without any '3rd level education' / not having been to college? and why don't the rest of us know about this ?? Shock

I mean, any drop in salary from what you have been used to takes some adjusting, but if you are on £118K between you, I suspect you have some wiggle room.
