I couldn't see a November thread so have copied the list from last month.

I've been on these threads for aaages now, but have been incredibly lazy lately!

So now it is November and those extra pennies could really come in handy, let's all try and boost our Christmas spending money.

Huge thank you to @otterses for setting this up and to everyone who has contributed and kept it going !!

What's rev? I haven't heard of them

I'm as fast typist when I'm in practice (around 90-100 wpm when I'm in "the zone" but I reckon I'm slow at the moment, need the practice)

bearlyactive · 06/11/2021 14:35

I've signed up to Rev.... no response

IsMaithLiom2 · 06/11/2021 15:04

@bearlyactive me too, it's been 4 weeks now. I don't know whether that's a rejection or they just take ages to respond. I've seen some people say it's taken them 3 months to hear back.

bearlyactive · 08/11/2021 09:44

Does anything ever happen on Appen? Confused

Buster27 · 08/11/2021 10:06

@bearlyactive Grin Yes, but sometimes doesn't feel like it! You're best off applying for everything that's suitable for you and seeing what comes of it. Personally I find you get phases of having little or no work (but a million applications in progress) and then phases of having more work than you can keep up with.

I was just about to say this. I had such a quiet time for like two months just now and suddenly I'm on three projects. Obviously I have access issues with two of them but one is keeping me busy at the moment, which is great.

I always have around 30 applications pending. Grin

But there is no option to apply for anything! Am I on the wrong page? They're just talking about levelling requirements (I am a level 0)

AnotherOne4 · 08/11/2021 17:44

@bearlyactive sounds like you are on the wrong Appen (don't worry, been there, done that Grin
You need Appen Connect.

8dpwoah · 08/11/2021 17:57

Rev took bloody ages to ok me, I haven't done much on there and nothing for a while but it's worth taking the test for anyone starting out. I'm earning just about £10 most days now thanks to a little App project and a couple of other bits and bobs so it is feasible but it took 6 months and a bit of luck to get to that.

I do WWW as well which I really enjoy but with a new baby I've taken a little break from that as can't commit to deadlines til I know if the current good run of sleep we get in the evenings and at night is likely to carry on, no chance when the toddler us awake 😂

bearlyactive · 08/11/2021 19:12

FFS. I'm trying to create an Appen Connect account and it keeps saying my bloody password doesn't meet the security requirements. WHAT ARE THE SECURITY REQUIREMENTS??

bearlyactive · 08/11/2021 19:15

Theeeere we go. Merged the accounts. And breeeathe.

AnotherOne4 · 08/11/2021 19:23

Lol having a little mini meltdown @bearlyactive?

bearlyactive · 08/11/2021 19:30

Just a little Grin

New question. Does every task require you to verify your smartphone? Because mine won't verify (it's a Samsung).

8dpwoah · 08/11/2021 20:18

I have an unfashionable phone so I never do any of them- some of the tasks specify laptop only which is a blessing and a curse!

There's also quite a few projects where you need an AppleID/device. And then more again where you need to interrogate your Google blob/Alexa/Fitbit/whatever. So it's worth ploughing through all th projects to see if you've got the right tech.

I only do the FB surveys, my little hour a day which is on SRT (Facebook & Instagram based). And I'm on Anc* but it keeps crashing on me so not expecting to get very far with that. Probably just as well as it looks pretty complex, reading the chat!

Hi everyone, mind if I join. I'm on a mission to make some extra cash.

I've signed up for Appen & already having problems. When trying to connect my phone it tells me that it can't be connected as I'm on a Linux (I'm not, I'm Android) or to only use my Android's Chrome. Again, I am using my Androids chrome Confused

It won't let me navigate away from the page but also won't connect my phone.

Anyone got a solution?

I was precisely the same so I can't help you, sorry :(
curdsandwhey · 09/11/2021 20:50

Can I ask for some help with my tax return, please? 2020-2021 is the first time in years that I've done anything self employed, and I've just seen a new-to-me question asking if I'm declaring it on a "cash basis" rather than traditional accounting.

Is this something I should say yes to? I just do a bit of transcription work along with various surveys and website testing etc, I earned approx £2,500 from self employment during that tax year and I just put everything on a simple Excel spreadsheet - I don't actually know how to do proper accounting. Is this what's meant by a cash basis? I also do some part-time work through an agency who is my employer and pays me through normal PAYE. I just want to check I'm doing the right thing.

curdsandwhey · 09/11/2021 21:50

Also for anyone who's on Roamler, can I ask how you feel about the tasks where you have to buy something from a shop and then write a review? I'm still not sure how I feel about the ethics of this. I'm not quite sure about it. And I'm finding it slow going because there are very few jobs I really want to do. Is it worth persevering to get to level 3? Do you get slightly less ridiculous tasks on level 3?

curdsandwhey · 09/11/2021 21:59

Sorry, another question. I've stopped getting tests on Usertesting. No screeners, nothing, for over a month. I wrote to them and asked if there was a problem, and they sent me a generic reply saying that different people get different amounts of tests depending on demographics etc, which I already know, but is there a way of finding out if I've been shadow banned or something like that? There is definitely something wrong as I've had literally no tests at all when I used to get about 20 screeners a day, even if I was rejected.

Tinging · 09/11/2021 22:44

@curdsandwhey cash basis is where you provide the figures on what you have actually received not what you have worked/invoiced for but haven’t received yet. So I only record what I have been paid for each month when it is received even if that was for work I did two months ago.
This link explains it better www.gov.uk/simpler-income-tax-cash-basis

Tinging · 09/11/2021 22:46

Sorry I’ve just read that back and it’s absolute nonsense 😂 Just use the link but yes cash basis is the one you want.

curdsandwhey · 09/11/2021 23:02

Great, thank you. I'm going to interpret "cash basis" as "I'm just doing casual work online and get paid for them, rather than running a complicated business".

Redcrayons · 10/11/2021 09:48

@curdsandwhey I’m on Roamler though I’ve hardly done any for a while. The fees are low for the effort involved. Pre covid I used to do a couple per week as they were in shops local to work and I’d be there anyway. Now I’m WFH the fees aren’t enough to cover the cost of me getting there.
I’d have no problem doing the reviews ones, but haven’t had a product I would actually buy and use. The fee is tiny for the effort involved.

I’m level 3 but not sure what difference that makes tbh.

curdsandwhey · 10/11/2021 10:56

@Redcrayons Thanks for your reply. You're right, they're not worth the money unless you happen to be passing by anyway, so I'll keep the app for the odd occasion. And you're right about the reviews, they're for products that I would just never, ever be interested in buying, although maybe that's why they want people to write reviews ;) But you're right, I need to resist buying stuff I don't want just for the sake of a few experience points.
