I couldn't see a November thread so have copied the list from last month.

I've been on these threads for aaages now, but have been incredibly lazy lately!

So now it is November and those extra pennies could really come in handy, let's all try and boost our Christmas spending money.

Huge thank you to @otterses for setting this up and to everyone who has contributed and kept it going !!

Sorry my Pp is in relation to Appen I'm on the contributor site. Thanks.

NotJustACigar · 27/11/2021 06:52

Hi I have been lurking on and off. I signed up for People for Research the other day and have applied for a few things. Does anyone know what the chances of being selected are and how many projects you usually get per month please? They look like they pay well but I suppose that makes them hard to get accepted onto!

Buster27 · 27/11/2021 11:59

@zippityzip Some of the Appen projects you might just need to answer a couple of demographic questions, but a lot do have test(s). In my experience it would be very rare for one to actually take near to 3-5 hours (even when that's stated in the sign up info). I'd say the majority are more like 15-30 minutes, a few up to an hour, although I probably did spend longer on them when I first started.

The tests are usually unpaid, although not always (e.g. I've been paid for transcription test batches). And yes, you could spend ages doing test(s) and either fail or pass but still get no work anyway. I have still found it very worthwhile doing (easily my best earner), but that's only my personal experience obviously. (I do still find it annoying when you pass a test and get no work from a project though Grin)

zippityzip · 27/11/2021 13:49

Thank you so much @Buster27 I'll give it a craic then. I'm guessing it's a numbers game? Apply for as much as you possibly can?

Buster27 · 27/11/2021 14:41

@zippityzip Definitely, I think most people on here that use Appen have loads of applications 'in progress' Grin Then just a waiting game to see which one(s) result in work. There's plenty of discussion on the different projects on here to give an idea if they're worthwhile or not (although probably varies a bit person to person depending on your strengths).

AppleJane · 28/11/2021 11:09

@AppleJane

Appen help needed please!

I've got a task that requires an Apple ID.

It says to enter Apple ID and Validation code (presumably after clicking verify)

Just would like to be reassured it's okay to give them Apple verify code?

To answer my own question in case anyone else is spooked by this, it's not the Apple verification code. It's a code Appen email to your Apple ID email address. Just not worded clearly!

AppleJane · 28/11/2021 11:13

Has anyone passed TranscribeMe?

The tests are tough and I'm halfway through and just wondering if it's worth the effort?

Annoyingly, they don't tell you your fail rate so you could be one percent off or 50! Don't think I did anything different on my pass to my fail!

IsMaithLiom2 · 28/11/2021 21:02

@AppleJane a few tips for the exam is to keep referring to the style guide, read the instructions of the question (ie. if it's multiple choice and your answer is A you type the letter A on its own not A) or A. they do penalise for that), for the audio test I think (but check the instructions) you don't start with a capital letter or end with punctuation, and use American spellings.

I've been working with TranscribeMe for about a month and I do think it's worth it! Once I passed the exam I was able to start work the following day so there was no wait like some of the other companies. The work was slow at first when I was only doing American jobs, the work would only start around 4 or 5pm when the US would wake up. But I did more exams to get onto the accent teams so a British spelling exam, and then English, Irish, Scottish and Australian accent exams. So now I have work most of the time, there's rarely any Scottish or Irish jobs so if you get in I would go for the English and Australian exams first. Australian jobs pay more but there are more English jobs. And I've recently got onto a better paying team too so I'm really enjoying it to be fair.

The jobs are usually only 2 to 8 minutes long so you don't get bogged down with a super long boring piece of work with terrible audio lol but on the other side you're gutted when a nice job is so short. It's usually fairly good audio and you don't get penalised for cancelling a job if you don't like the audio for whatever reason.

I do this all day in between caring for my 9 month old so during the daytime when my partner is at work I'm very slow but in the evening when I can get a bit more focus I can make about $6 an hour with it so that's not bad. Not great but not bad considering the trade off of being fully flexible and not paying for childcare. There's a social media platform for the transcribers too so it feels like a real team.

IsMaithLiom2 · 28/11/2021 21:04

On that note, has anyone got accepted to Rev recently? I applied for both transcribing and captioning about a month ago and still haven't heard anything back. And anyone gotten the 'your skills don't match our current needs but we'll keep you in mind' email from Way With Words and ever heard back? Or is it worth applying again?

zippityzip · 29/11/2021 10:17

@Buster27 As I'm already employed I guess I'll have to declare anything made from Appen? I've had a few invitation emails 😬😬😬

AppleJane · 29/11/2021 12:07

@IsMaithLiom2 thank you very much for your reply! It's very helpful to me and will be for others looking for the same info Smile

I managed to pass the final third audio exam at 6am this morning so I'm happy and relieved, didn't really want to give up on it after having my head full of the guide! Hopefully they will activate my account soon and then I'll look out for the other tests you've mentioned.

I used to type up assignments years ago for a family member studying OU and found some of the subjects really interesting so I'm hoping that will be an added benefit.

I totally agree with you about the money. I'm hoping to use it as a way to get free experience to see where it takes me. When I used to work in an office it would take an hour to get ready, an hour to travel there, another back. That's 3 hours of wasted time plus travel expenses all eating into your day and money so even if you're on a good hourly rate it's a lot less than you realise. And being able to plan work around your day instead of the other way around is priceless Grin

Buster27 · 29/11/2021 12:16

@zippityzip I think it's if you make over £1000 in a tax year that you need to declare self earnings. So depends how much work you're planning Smile

PleaseGoDontGoAgain · 29/11/2021 13:45

Does anyone know if a chromebook can be used for peeling spuds? I need to replace laptop

Snowballs1 · 29/11/2021 14:33

I would think you could, I assume they only specify that you have to use a laptop rather than a tablet to ensure the screen is big enough for you to read the content clearly.
I am wondering what the oldest version of windows I could use for it, I have a few old laptops which stopped working, & would like to have one repaired to use as a back up, I think at least one has Windows XP but can't remember them all.

whysotriggered · 29/11/2021 15:24

@PleaseGoDontGoAgain yes as I use a Chromebook for it and always have

Snowballs1 · 29/11/2021 16:13

As they specify to use Chrome, I found out there's no point getting any old laptops repaired, Chrome no longer supports Windows XP & Windows 7 only until 15th January 2023

8dpwoah · 30/11/2021 10:02

Still nothing from Yu* for me, shame is it would seem to fit round having a baby napping on me than transcription will so was hoping to put some of my hours into that, but maybe I'll be fully back on the typing train after all...

IsMaithLiom2 · 30/11/2021 12:31

@AppleJane no problem, glad it's helpful Smile I think I've read most of these threads and haven't seen much info about TranscribeMe so yeah hopefully it'll help someone else who's wondering too.

Hopefully your account should get activated today then! There are definitely some interesting topics that I've learned about from it.

Yeah my office was an hour away too, such a waste of time and I hated driving especially in bad weather! The only thing is the inconsistency of the work but like I said it has been fairly consistent since I joined all the other teams. It was quiet for Thanksgiving and I think at Christmas it will be quiet but thats to be expected Smile

Just in case anyone wants a free share.. Have signed up to appen too and finally seeing projects only to discover how hard it is to get anything done with a constant cluster feeding 4 month old and an active toddler 🙈

AppleJane · 02/12/2021 02:46

@IsMaithLiom2 they've activated my account. I'm glad you told me about the work situation because you was right, no work until after about 5pm.

But I've discovered the 'library' and I'm going to study all the documents before diving in and will take the British tests straight after that! Smile

IsMaithLiom2 · 02/12/2021 21:11

@AppleJane that's great how are you getting on with it? The British spelling exam is actually tricky I failed it the first time 😂 but I found the accent exams fine after that haha I think the exams are good practice for wrapping your head around the style guide. I haven't been doing much this week I need to gather the motivation again

AppleJane · 02/12/2021 23:13

@IsMaithLiom2 I had to go to a Christmas lunch today so didn't get much studying done! Hoping to have a good bash tomorrow and over the weekend.

One thing I struggle with is no extra space between sentences. I was taught to touch type years ago and it's really difficult to stop my auto pilot doing a double space bar tap! And looking at the grammar rules I've realised I don't know half as much as I thought I did Grin

Just hope I don't get kicked off once I start the proper work after all the hard slog of the exams! I think I read somewhere that only 15% of applicants pass so I need to stop being so hard on myself if I fail first time.

Tinging · 03/12/2021 11:15

How much notice do Appen give when they boot you off a task after a year? I’m coming up to a year on og**n in a couple of weeks and haven’t heard anything yet.

whysotriggered · 03/12/2021 15:43

When I did one of the Yearlong tasks, I got a few days, told to work until the end of the week and that was it.

Tinging · 03/12/2021 15:57

Ah thank you I’ll maybe expect something nearer the time then. I’ll be a little sad to see it go as it’s such reliable money but my god it’s boring!
