Welcome to the March thread everyone.

The idea of the thread is to earn a bit of extra cash. There are a few ways to do this. I'm sure some of our regulars can add to this. But here's some ideas.

www.connect.appen.com this is a site where you can sign up for micro projects and some longer term projects.
www. crispthinking.com social media moderation
www.lionbridge.com projects
www.utest.com user testing
www.prolific.co surveys
www.intellizom.com short one off tasks
www.clickworker.com short one off tasks

I'm sure I've forgotten loads. If you want to look over previous months, there are loads of pervious threads in this section.

I have the Am** email now.

unicornpoopoop · 02/03/2021 21:37

I'm so excited that I have the Amur email. I don't even care when I just have crap to buy, it's the most excitement I'm getting right now so I'l take anything 😆

Dancingdolphins · 02/03/2021 21:54

Got the am* email. Looked at first product and it's a right load of cheap shite. There better be some decent high price items I can return this time as it's not worth doing it for the piece rate when you don't even want the product!

Dancingdolphins · 02/03/2021 21:55

@ruralwanderer sent me some very nice glasses though from her round Smile

ruralwanderer · 02/03/2021 21:59

Maybe we should start an Am* swap shop lol! Good luck to all those doing it this month, hope you get some good stuff 🤞

Graphista · 02/03/2021 22:02

Thanks to those who replied to my post, looks like a laptop then. I was thinking that would be the case.

Can I briefly outline my circumstances/hopes?

Disabled and on benefits and hating it. Housebound too at the moment. I've looked at wfh stuff many times before but until covid almost all of them were scams!

I'd like to ease back into working/off benefits gradually (terrified of losing a steady income enough to cover basics at least) and was thinking of doing some kind of VA, freelance writing/admin type work.

I'm going to check with my advisor where I stand with doing this kinda thing, I think I'm allowed to do a bit of work. Which would let me see if working this way is doable for me.

It's the lack of decent tech that's been holding me back

Which can I do on iPhone? For me to maybe get a taster?

I'm a quick typist and proofreader (should've charged for this at uni I'd have made a fortune! ), quick "clicker" on games etc

I'm actually a bit too good at card games but weirdly have never learned to play poker. I've not gambled often in life (rarely having money for stakes!) but when I did I fared pretty well, blackjack is my main game I seem to have a knack for, not sure if any of that provides transferable skills for this kinda thing?

Also a bit of a lateral thinker and a trivia fan (love a good quiz!) again not sure if any of that is transferable?

Re which laptop, I'm thinking maybe an hp, dell would be my ideal but a wee bit pricey! And I'm
not sure they're necessarily worth it. Budget £500-600 but I rarely have this opportunity and don't know how long until I'd be hopefully earning enough I can save for/afford a new one when this one inevitably succumbs to planned obsolescence! So I'm thinking to get one with as decent a memory and processor as I can afford in hopes it'll last.

@CrepuscularCritter yes I would err towards writing more than anything else to be honest. Make the most of where my skills lie! Last time I tested myself on old laptop (which is now completely dead and was never great anyway! An acer it's put me right off them) which just had a standard style of keyboard I was around 90wpm which was a disappointment, when I was last working in an admin role where there was a lot of writing I was around 100-110wpm so I've clearly dropped through lack of practice. Hoping I can improve once I get back into it.

Quick question - is it worth paying out for the additional ms software at this point? Currys have these "bundles" which include ms 365 personal which is a sort of boosted ms office package I think? But is it really necessary for this kind of work? I've always been fine just using the basic ms office package that comes with a computer.

Dancingdolphins · 02/03/2021 22:14

@Graphista I don't even have ms on my laptop anymore- I just use google docs. None of the work I've done needs this any sort of word/excel type thing though.

I can't advise on writing type work though as I'm useless at that sort of thing! I think people use Rev and way with words (I think it's called that) for transcription. I find Crjsp and Appen to be pretty regular earners but both can take ages to hear from and Appen is very hit and miss as to if you're lucky enough to get a long term project. Quite a few transcription projects come up on Appen though.

Dancingdolphins · 02/03/2021 22:15

@ruralwanderer love the idea of a swapshop 🤣

TheLolaMontez · 02/03/2021 22:42

Ive had the Am' email too - I've 9 items this time, will crack on tomorrow, can't be arsed tonight. I had a quick look at the first ad and it doesn't look promising 🙄

Paddingtonthebear · 02/03/2021 22:56

Just place marking!

I’ve signed up with Lion but haven’t heard anything, are there any active jobs to look for at the moment or is just pot luck if you get selected?

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 02/03/2021 22:56

No Am** email for me :(
@Graphista you could write blog posts for Search Sciences, perhaps? In your position though I would use sites like Coursera Udemy and Codecademy to learn coding or tech skills to make proper money working from home.

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 02/03/2021 22:59

@Graphista if you do need MS office, look online for an OEM licence (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Much much cheaper (around £20), but tied to the machine you install it on so can't be used on multiple machines.

Graphista · 02/03/2021 23:16

@IrritableBitchSyndrome

Thanks for the tips I'll look tomorrow when I'm a bit more awake

Now, here's an odd thing. I am not scientifically or mathematically minded - supposedly - I flunked computers and maths at school just wasn't my thing at all

But...I fell into a data processing role as my first admin role, this was pre Windows let alone ms office! I was processing accounts (flunked maths remember) which included mentally calculating vat percentages, the computer I was using was somewhat unreliable and in those days companies didn't have their own IT departments, they paid IT specialists a LOT of money to come and fix computer issues when they occurred. Well this particular computer kept crashing quite regularly but I noticed the IT chap wasn't doing that much, I knew something about computer code from messing around at home on the family computer based on the little I did pick up in computer classes about BASIC and COBOL programming language, some of which I still remember now. So I watched what he did and chatted a bit with him and figured out what the issue was, not enough to prevent it but enough that we no longer had to call him every time this particular issue occurred. I asked boss' permission first of course, but next time it happened I had a try at fixing it myself - and it worked! The fix lasted longer than when the IT chap did it too boss was pleased!

But I've never really thought of myself as someone that could learn this stuff "properly"

But it's something I've been considering lately - especially as I have the time to learn.

But again overwhelmed by the courses available and not being able to check if they're "legit" and also possible cost issues not necessarily course fees but having the right tech on which to learn.

Is it really something I could do? I wonder?

I say I'm not scientific - I'm an ex nurse and I managed fine with the science and maths I needed for that

I seem to learn it better when I can see a real world way of using it? Weird

minnimiss · 02/03/2021 23:37

Yes I have Am** again too! I will crack on tomorrow. We should get the swap shop sorted I'm sure one mans junk and all that!

Buster27 · 03/03/2021 01:25

@Rad2016 do you mean the multiple choice questions rather than the test batch where you're actually transcribing? If so, search the guidelines for key words in the question as most (maybe all) of the answers should be in there. Feel free to PM if you get stuck or unsure Smile

Gatekeeper · 03/03/2021 06:34

@Rad2016 all the answers are in the guidelines, some of them more hidden than others and certainly not in any logical order. I printed mine off which helped then scribbled through if I'd answered that bit IYSWIM

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 03/03/2021 08:03

@Graphista you absolutely could learn tech skills properly, and cheaply. Many Coursera courses can be followed for free to give you a flavour before you commit.

seizethecuttlefish · 03/03/2021 08:26

@Rad2016 have the guidelines open and Ctrl F to search terms. They are a lovely bunch in chat. I did it for a couple of weeks but my accuracy wasn't great. Attention to detail isn't my thing. Confused

I'm working through Am...so far, so weird!

OP posts:
Rad2016 · 03/03/2021 08:31

Thanks guys, it's the initial assessment after i've applied. I can't see guidelines as yet because I will only be able to once I pass the assessment I think.

rhij86 · 03/03/2021 08:37

No Am* here for me. There's always next month!

TheLolaMontez · 03/03/2021 08:53

My first am' product I really don't want to buy - it's definitely not what is in the picture and very close to the spend limit. You know when you can just tell. I really resent obvious scammers getting paid.

MarigoldMoonStone · 03/03/2021 09:28

Am** I got:
a periodic table ornament (just what I've also wanted ??!)
a pair of shoes (not my style)
an eyebrow epilator (from china)
a crop top (from china)
had to then skip 3
then my last one was my saving grace - £100 coat from the UK so can return it :)
so ended on a good note!
Total spent £187.50 - cheapest round yet!
Oh the shoes £6.40 tax got added on which i only noticed from my PayPal receipt, it wasn't on the receipt they had emailed me so had to send through a separate reimbursement for that

unicornpoopoop · 03/03/2021 09:51

I've got 2 tops, a signed photo, a lamp, a piece of art and 2 skips. Not too bad I guess. I should be able to return some at least

bookgirl1982 · 03/03/2021 10:10

Not a bad am** this time, two skips, three useful things and three not so good. Possibly a couple of returns.

If anyone wants dog food or a horse brush in the swap shop let me know!

YonderTweek · 03/03/2021 10:44

Gosh you guys are quick! I've only made my first purchase and I'm thinking of starting the second one. I have 8 to do in total. Fingers crossed for decent returns. Haha.

I finally have some work on K%%x, which is unheard of, so I want to crack on with that and do as much as I can. I have no idea how much work there is so I'll blitz it now and do A££r a bit later. Although I really want to know what my next purchases are! Grin

Obviously most days I have no work, but today I have loads, and a food delivery and my son wants me to play with him constantly. Hmm
