Thanks to those who replied to my post, looks like a laptop then. I was thinking that would be the case.
Can I briefly outline my circumstances/hopes?
Disabled and on benefits and hating it. Housebound too at the moment. I've looked at wfh stuff many times before but until covid almost all of them were scams!
I'd like to ease back into working/off benefits gradually (terrified of losing a steady income enough to cover basics at least) and was thinking of doing some kind of VA, freelance writing/admin type work.
I'm going to check with my advisor where I stand with doing this kinda thing, I think I'm allowed to do a bit of work. Which would let me see if working this way is doable for me.
It's the lack of decent tech that's been holding me back
Which can I do on iPhone? For me to maybe get a taster?
I'm a quick typist and proofreader (should've charged for this at uni I'd have made a fortune! ), quick "clicker" on games etc
I'm actually a bit too good at card games but weirdly have never learned to play poker. I've not gambled often in life (rarely having money for stakes!) but when I did I fared pretty well, blackjack is my main game I seem to have a knack for, not sure if any of that provides transferable skills for this kinda thing?
Also a bit of a lateral thinker and a trivia fan (love a good quiz!) again not sure if any of that is transferable?
Re which laptop, I'm thinking maybe an hp, dell would be my ideal but a wee bit pricey! And I'm
not sure they're necessarily worth it. Budget £500-600 but I rarely have this opportunity and don't know how long until I'd be hopefully earning enough I can save for/afford a new one when this one inevitably succumbs to planned obsolescence! So I'm thinking to get one with as decent a memory and processor as I can afford in hopes it'll last.
@CrepuscularCritter yes I would err towards writing more than anything else to be honest. Make the most of where my skills lie! Last time I tested myself on old laptop (which is now completely dead and was never great anyway! An acer it's put me right off them) which just had a standard style of keyboard I was around 90wpm which was a disappointment, when I was last working in an admin role where there was a lot of writing I was around 100-110wpm so I've clearly dropped through lack of practice. Hoping I can improve once I get back into it.
Quick question - is it worth paying out for the additional ms software at this point? Currys have these "bundles" which include ms 365 personal which is a sort of boosted ms office package I think? But is it really necessary for this kind of work? I've always been fine just using the basic ms office package that comes with a computer.
