Re Self Assessment. Yes. The current tax year is 20/21 so ends in April with the tax due the following January. There is a £1000 'entrepreneurs' allowance though, don't need to register if under that.

MiddleClassProblem · 05/12/2020 08:42

Thanks @Wolfff

Redcrayons · 05/12/2020 11:44

sorry to barge into the tax convo, Does the £1000 only apply if you have no other earnings?

I have a regular job, so pay PAYE for that, but have been submitting self assessment for a few years. I usually pay the tax they say I owe and then half way through the year get a rebate, for a similar Although smaller amount.

Fizbo · 05/12/2020 14:54

So I've done a few potato shifts now and for me personally they aren't as lucrative. I'm definitely better in shorter bursts and when surges are on. Looking at the queues however I wonder if this will be the new normal? I think I make around £8-9 an hour plus the bonus so not a bad amount but I don't always have a free hour to commit especially over the weekend with kids around etc. I am still so grateful though for being able to top up my income by finding this thread

SingHallelujah · 05/12/2020 15:38

I asked someone and was told the shifts are a trial, they may be permanent.

I've done a few but prefer the flexibility without them l. I do about 300/350 an hour so it's okay money but I wouldn't want to do more than 2 hours in a row. New recruits doing 3 or 4 in a row is crazy.

Wolfff · 05/12/2020 15:50

@Redcrayons
You still get the £1000 allowance even if you have PAYE from another source.

Wolfff · 05/12/2020 15:52

@Redcrayons

It’s worth reading the SA notes/guidance thing carefully, it does change from time to time even if you’ve been doing it years.

seizethecuttlefish · 05/12/2020 19:59

@Fizbo same here re potato. I can't commit with the kids and I don't want to be working at 10 at night. I've just had to break off as my toddler projectile vomited everywhere!

I'm better with short durations, no way I could do hours. I also like to be able to log on adhoc.

Hi all, it's been a while since I have been on the thread but had a great year on 2 long term Appen projects and also doing low risk casino. I got accepted onto potato and did some work on it over the summer but didn't really take to it (I found all the messages and everything a bit overwhelming) and have now been removed as I wasn't doing it enough. I submitted an invoice over a month ago via paypal but have still not been paid. Is that the correct way to get money or did I miss something?

lilmishap · 06/12/2020 10:44

Has pot rates gone up?

Redcrayons · 06/12/2020 11:48

@lilmishap rate is still the same, they’re just offering a £2 bonus of you commit to an hour slot. They’ve had loads of content come in the last couple of weeks.

Baby89 · 06/12/2020 12:44

Hi all , got an email from appen asking me to confirm availability for am*r which starts tomorrow, does it mean I've been selected? Also I've read over the guidelines a few times but if anyone can talk me through the steps of purchasing etc I will be very grateful. Also if you can share what you managed to purchase that would be great. Thank you

lynsey91 · 06/12/2020 13:20

I hate the new system on potato and really hope it is not going to stay. I do not want to commit to an hour of working or a set time. I like to log in and out to suit me and what else I am doing.

Not sure why it is supposedly suddenly busy. I say supposedly because when I was doing some this morning I was waiting between quite a few items before they loaded

SingHallelujah · 06/12/2020 14:47

Crisp isn't supposedly busy, it's very busy. You can see the numbers for yourself.

If you aren't getting content you need to flag it. I'm wondering if people on shifts are working very slowly as the numbers aren't going down. I dislike the shifts too and have only worked a few. I am doing one later but don't think I'll do any more. I prefer working in shorter bursts.

ElectricEels · 06/12/2020 15:22

Agree - if you don't get content quickly when the numbers are so high you need to clear cache etc. It's very busy!

peabrainer · 06/12/2020 15:25

I HATE this new shift system on Crisp. I'm not doing any more of the shifts, I work much slower doing an hour straight than doing 15 min bursts. So the £2 bonus isn't worth it for me. I'm sure so many of us are juggling family and other jobs and the great thing about it was popping on when I had a spare few minutes, especially if I could catch a surge. It's really demotivated me. I expect a lot of the newbies are trying it and probably working slowly so proportionately maybe the £2 is worth it for them. I fear they are going to stick to this new system. But it doesn't give them much room for coping with sudden busy periods if they refuse to do any surges. The other thing I was surprised about was how few people there are for each shift- when they ask people who are doing the hourly shifts to respond on Slack, there only seem to be between 10 and 20 people working. I had assumed there were hundreds at any one time! I'm hoping the new system isn't working well for them in clearing the queues...then they might have to go back to surges. Let's hope the novelty of booking shifts wears off with everyone...
Anyone actually liking the shifts?

unicornpoopoop · 06/12/2020 15:47

Did everyone get an Am email today? I've not received one so not sure if that means I'm not in this round or if I find out tomorrow

Tattiespuds · 06/12/2020 15:52

I dropped off a bit towards end of Nov, I had lots going on and was a bit run down and didn't have the head space. I missed lots of surges on Potato and now I'm trying to get back into the swing of things they aren't doing Surges to push people into shifts which I echo the thoughts above. I don't like, I can't always commit to an hour solid.

I didn't get anything on Appen last month - only projects I could get where ones where I needed to video myself in poses etc or one even wanted me to video my kids. I hope I get better this month although wont hold my breath I don't seem to have much luck there.

I didn't check potato towards end of Nov but think my statement will be around £200 ish which is better than nothing. Think its time to cast my net further to make more.

TeddyDidIt · 06/12/2020 15:57

@Baby89 You won't know for sure whether you've been selected until launch day (tomorrow), but it's a good sign!

@unicornpoopoop I haven't received anything today. I think baby89 just did the quiz and passed recently, since they sent the availability survey earlier this month, so she is getting that email now.

I spent the full $500 on 11 items: a nice home office desk chair (which we needed!); a watch (which I'll sell on); mascara; a duo of fancy face creams; a night dress (I could choose from a selection); a t-shirt(only thing that hasn't arrived); a pet bed; rubber shoe covers (!); Goli nutrition gummies; paint by numbers set; child's coat from United Colours of Benetton (which I returned for a refund).

unicornpoopoop · 06/12/2020 16:01

@TeddyDidIt wow I'm impressed with what you got!

I spent about £300 and got a hijab, a poster, nail decals, a dress, jeans, hoodie, shelving unit and a roll of wallpaper.

Returned the two most expensive so got £150 back. Gifted a couple and the rest was pretty much unusable but I'm hoping to get on again

simbobs · 06/12/2020 16:07

Placemarking

TeddyDidIt · 06/12/2020 16:10

@unicornpoopoop me too. I never usually even look at the ads on FB; this week I've been noticing them and hoping certain things come up if I get to do the project again Grin

seizethecuttlefish · 06/12/2020 16:39

I really enjoyed Am and hoping I get on again. I had the email telling me about Dec and filled in the availability study but haven't heard anything else. Fingers crossed.

I'm still waiting on one of my previous ones to arrive. Not confident and I've asked for a refund but it's unlikely so I'll have to put a claim in.

OP posts:
Buster27 · 06/12/2020 17:34

@Baby89 Oh that's good news! I thought you would have to wait until the next round as you passed after the deadline for the availability survey as that's what happened to me (although maybe the round had actually started when I passed). Fingers crossed you get selected Smile

@unicornpoopoop that's a good haul! I only got to spend about 250.

Catatemyhomework · 06/12/2020 17:52

Those of you who have done Amur, can you pay using PayPal or bank account? Also if item incurs customs tax after you've ordered and paid, can you claim back even if you have previously reached $150 for item? Presumably not. Also, I have read the guidelines and still bit confused as to the finer details, although imagine it gets easier when you start doing it. Haven't been selected yet but also received welcome email last week.
