Here's what I did in June:

£28 on Prolific
£3.50 profit on Ebay (I sold my cheapest item Grin)
$50 (USD) on User Testing - if Intellizoom is your thing, I recommend joining User Testing too as they actually pay $10 per test which is more than Intellizoom.
$24 (USD) on Intellizoom
Up to 12 cogs on 20Cogs

Plodding along slowly but surely on YouGov - you have to earn 5,000 points in order to cash out £50. It will take many months, but I recommend it as a slow background project, mainly because they never screen you out, so every survey I've started, I have finished.

For some reason I still haven't got round to joining Clickworker, which I've been meaning to do for ages. I really should sort this out.

Mrsm010918 · 01/07/2020 14:42

Popping in here

Prolific £36
Life points panel £5
Appen £41
Clickworker £8
People per hour £22
Neevo £18

Total £130

I did set myself a target of 300 for June but there were some dry patches for work and it took me a while to get my first Appen task too. Here's hoping I qualify for more this month!

Gonna aim for £300 again

curdsandwhey · 01/07/2020 14:50

I have a couple of questions.

Firstly, if you do some work that gets paid the next month, like if you do an Intellizoom test in May and it they pay you three weeks later in June, do you count this as part of your May totals or your June totals?

Secondly, for anyone earning foreign currency - at what point do you decide how much you've got paid? Like for example Intellizoom and User Testing pay me every so often into my PayPal account, in USD, and then I can covert the currency in my PayPal account whenever I like. But the obviously the exchange rate keeps changing so I'm never really sure how to record things. Also I think PayPal takes a conversion fee so I'm not sure how it all works in terms of keeping records or just telling people on here how much you've earned.

MrsWombat · 01/07/2020 14:59

@curdsandwhey I've asked that question before and no one has given me a straight answer (here or elsewhere) so I just go by the date I get paid and what I get paid after paypal converts it as their fee is built into their exchange rate.

curdsandwhey · 01/07/2020 15:04

Okay thanks. If the conversion fee is built into their exchange rate, does that mean that you can convert as you go along, or is there a reason to wait longer and convert a larger sum all at once? I'm just asking because I use PayPal to pay for stuff, and if there's USD in my account without being enough GBP to pay for the thing I'm buying, it gives me the option of using the USD as payment but also states a conversion fee.

Wannabegreenfingers · 01/07/2020 15:08

OK, so I'm new to this. Would someone be kind enough to help me understand how it all works and which platforms are best for a newbie.

I do work full time, but as a newly single parent. I'm always looking at ways to increase the cash-flow.

Thank you in advance...

curdsandwhey · 01/07/2020 15:10

I recommend Prolific as the first thing for newbies to sign up for! They're academic surveys, so a lot of them are quite interesting. You have to fill in the "about me" section, do the practice test, and then you're away.

dirtyfries · 01/07/2020 15:11

@curdsandwhey I keep a spreadsheet and log the work as and when I do it. I use a worst case scenario exchange rate ie $10 on Usertesting I'll input as £7. If get more than this at the exchange rate when they pay out it's a bonus. I keep this log purely to keep me motivated and accountable.

I then keep a separate spreadsheet logging all the actual payments for tax purposes.

curdsandwhey · 01/07/2020 15:15

@dirtyfries Do you convert currency every time it comes in, or leave it and do it all in a larger sum?

dirtyfries · 01/07/2020 15:21

@curdsandwhey I tend to withdraw foreign currency about twice a month rather than as it comes in. Purely to reduce the amount of transactions

seizethecuttlefish · 01/07/2020 15:23

Whoo hoo @justtheone. Exciting times!

I track on a spreadsheet and have a conversion formula. I just enter what it is on the day I transfer it. I track for the month the payment comes in for intellizoom etc but if it's paid via invoice for the month of the invoice. I then take 30% every month and put it in a separate account, in case I ever earn enough to pay tax. But that pays my NI.

I've not had much from YouGov in the last few months.

GachaBread · 01/07/2020 15:26

Every amount that is in a different currency that I earn I just reveal it as what I actually get after it has been converted and fees taken etc. I have only ever been a couple quid out each time so for example cloud workers pay in euros. Once I convert and do all the PayPal fees then I will reveal that amount.

Saying that PayPal make a tidy sum from me with their bloody fees....

curdsandwhey · 01/07/2020 15:27

The thing is I haven't been transferring it to my bank account. I use PayPal to pay for stuff so I don't really know.

WonderTweek · 01/07/2020 15:28

Holy moly! You all have really impressive totals. I am inspired. Grin I only properly started looking into this about two weeks ago so I've only made about £70 on surveys and stuff, but I'm hoping July will be better.

curdsandwhey · 01/07/2020 15:29

£70 is really good for just your first two weeks!

dirtyfries · 01/07/2020 15:34

Payoneer fees are my biggest gripe! I've still only been accepted onto B* and as the work there is so sporadic, the $3 fee off of each invoice is a real kick in the teeth.

Speaking of, can I choose not to submit this month's invoice and combine it with next months?

MrsWombat · 01/07/2020 15:35

I convert as it comes is as that is how I record it on my spreadsheet.

mrssnow82 · 01/07/2020 15:36

@justtheonethen How exciting! Keep us posted!

I have just done my monthly totals and I made £450 in June, much better than May which was dismal.

Wolfff · 01/07/2020 15:48

@curdsandwhey

I would choose one method, either when the money is actually earned or when you actually receive the cash. I do the latter.

For expenses such as currency conversions or fees I just net them off. So I record the money actually received. I tend to xfer them on receipt to my bank so it's easier to see.

The other way to make it more complicated would be to record the actual amount paid and then deduct fee as an allowable expense.

For PayPal etc if a lot of stuff is mixed together, I would just apportion it as best you can.

For tax purposes, keep your statements from PayPal etc, bank statements and your own records. You don't need accounting software or anything like that.

curdsandwhey · 01/07/2020 15:52

Ah okay, thanks. I never thought about it at first as I didn't think I'd be earning enough for it to matter.

Wannabegreenfingers · 01/07/2020 15:54

thank you curdsandwhey I've signed up to Prolific so will give that a go and other's as and when

MoreMoneyPlease · 01/07/2020 15:58

Good luck @justtheone, exciting times!

Think I've made about £525 this month, mainly my regular Appen project (£310, I'll be gutted when that comes to an end), Intellizoom (£120) and selling on FB (£95).

Need to be more proactive with the other stuff, I've got a bit complacentConfused

Catatemyhomework · 01/07/2020 16:05

My month's earnings are always the month I am paid and the cash is in my account. This way I add it to my spreadsheet which is just a simple calculation adding up all money from each income stream. I then have a conversion calculation for dollars and euros. I have got a bit slack with it this last couple of months as earnings haven't been great, but on good months I have been quite meticulous at calculating every penny.
@justtheonethen, how exciting! Good luck! Bear

CooperLooper · 01/07/2020 16:21

Is something like Appen/Crisp classed as a second job if I already work full time? Ie tax implications? Or is it like matched betting where anybody can do it alongside. Thanks!

MrsWombat · 01/07/2020 16:26

@CooperLooper You will have tax obligations. Take a look at the trading allowance though as the first £1000 you earn will technically be tax free.
