Noticed the last thread was full so thought i'd better start a new one.

Welcome to posters old and new :-)

Please just remember that we're not allowed to discuss work publicly. I'd hate for anyone to get into trouble.

MrsWombat · 26/01/2020 13:50

There wasn't a NDA for this project, it was a privacy notice for how they are storing our voice data. The BBC are very open about creating this app. Appen on the other hand are very specific about what we can and cannot say. SmileBlush

Someone asked for BeMyEye tips - assuming it's the same as the photo thing that's in all of the German ones I've done so far.

  • Try to make sure you can do the whole shelf in one go as going back and forth to it messes up your angles badly.
  • If the aisle is narrow or has displays in the middle of it, stand as far back as you physically can at the narrowest point. Select 1/2/3 however many photos to take - usually 2 in this case. Tilt the phone downwards to get the second/third photo but don't move it sideways, crouch or move your feet. Just line up the shelf with the last product on but don't worry that the product will be at a totally different angle.
  • If the aisle is wider and unobstructed stand in front of the left hand side of the shelf making sure the horizontal shelves match up with the horizontal guide lines on the photo outline and the left vertical edge roughly in line with the left dotted line of photo guide. It's more important that the horizontal is exactly straight, not tilted than the sides.
  • Choose a distance you can see the whole shelf in one and it fills most of the camera screen if you can but not right to the edge, as that can cause cropping.
  • When you have to take the second photo sidestep trying to keep the same distance. You could use floor tiles or the opposite shelf behind you to ensure you're stepping neatly sideways, not forward or back. I have a buggy with me so I sometimes park DS at the end and stay in line with him. Keep going until you see the product at the end of the previous photo line up at the top left. You'll usually see it from a different angle, this is fine.
  • Keep going until you've got the whole of the end shelf in, even if your last photo is mostly random supermarket and about 5% shelf. (Careful not to get people's faces).
  • When you're done and have come out of that screen, scroll back and tap on the photos button to check them. As you scroll through, the horizontal shelves and especially the tops and bottoms should be even and matched up. If they look wonky (zigzaggy or angled), you've looked to the left or right in order to match up the product where you should have sidestepped. If the tops/bottoms are in different places you haven't matched up the horizontal shelves well. That's the easiest way to keep your photos in line. Or you might have stepped forward or back. You can redo individual photos in a line if you need to.
  • If you're not sure whether something counts just include it anyway! You won't get rejected for too many photos, only too few.

Is that helpful? What kinds of things do you get rejected on?

Lougle · 26/01/2020 18:23

Fair enough, Mrs Wombat.

Well, I've had a very stressful afternoon, trying to combine 'work' with a child who left her homework too late and is struggling with it, but my pending payments are up to £24.48 on UT. So I'm delighted, even though I have a banging headache and was positively sweating earlier!

MoreMoneyPlease · 26/01/2020 18:34

I had an email from Prolific telling me that I've been awarded a bonus payment!!! Very excited until I saw it was for 1p...and I was worried about not having any work with Appen Grin

Tefiti2 · 26/01/2020 19:17

Has anyone heard anything from Appen recently? I have about 13 active processes at the moment, wondering if this is just the norm or I’m particularly unlucky?

Lougle · 26/01/2020 20:02

I have 18 active processes and some projects that I'm ready to work but there is no work.

Frenchdoors1 · 26/01/2020 20:11

I have 11 in progress... They keep piling up yet nothing comes of it Confused

Madre77 · 26/01/2020 21:52

I recieved a message from Appen to say they had extended my contract for another 6months which made my day (I am on one long term project) and they wanted me to test for something and I dutifully did and nothing... I have 19 projects in progress and nowt.Hmm

Madre77 · 26/01/2020 21:55

Anyone rejected from Lionbridge recently? Weirdly they rejected my NEW application then sent me an email minutes later on an old application asking me to apply for the same project. I suspect this is how staff get their laughs over there but I am in no position to query at the moment as I need all the £££Grin

Madre77 · 26/01/2020 22:42

Is anyone doing this full time (self employed) ? I am trying but family think I am crazy. I would interested to hear from anyone else who is pm me if don't want to share publicly.

@Madre77, I have a day job because all these jobs are like contracting, they can end the contract at anytime so if you have another permanent job, I’ll advise you to keep both. If this is all you do, have a back up plan, like different income streams if one dries up.

justtheonethen · 27/01/2020 07:05

@Madre77 I do crisp as my job. But only part time.

otterses · 27/01/2020 07:40

@Madre77

I did for about three months when I was waiting for my background checks to clear for a new job earlier last year. It was really stressful. The thing with Crisp, Appen, Lionbridge etc. is that work can dry up, or cease all together. I couldn't cope with having very little control over my income.

I personally wouldn't jack in the day job unless I had at least six months worth of a 'salary' saved, and a source of income from something I had more control over, like a blog, or an established self employed business. You don't want to be reliant on something that's not always sustainable.

@themneyshed would be a good person to talk to about this, he jacked in the day job last year Grin

themoneyshed · 27/01/2020 09:18

@Madre77

I’m 38 and in January of 2019 left my full time local government Management job with all its holiday and sick pay that I had been doing for 11 years to become full time self employed. I now just live off blogging and matched betting.

I used to do 37 hours a way and probably now so around 15-20 which is a far better work / life balance. I also earn more than I did in my day job.

I was doing BOTH for 5 years before I left and something just has to give because I was burning the candle at both ends.

Best decision I ever made!

rhij86 · 27/01/2020 10:03

has anyone had any luck applying for some of the more recent appen projects?

Madre77 · 27/01/2020 10:17

@justtheonethen @themoneyshed @otterses @Tohaveandtohold

Thank you all so much for your feedback. I am a lone parent with a toddler. I was made redundant from my secure full time Public sector job as my maternity leave was due to end. I tried to turn to our benefits system for support and I have never been so stressed or humiliated in all my life, especially as a full tax payer for 25+ years. This is not something I am taking lightly and have several streams. X

Catatemyhomework · 27/01/2020 10:51

I have just seen that I have a £24.48 payment pending for Utest. I am really chuffed with that, although it probably equates to about £1 an hour given the amount of time I've spent on it!
@rhij86, I have 3 projects on Appen that I have qualified for and there is no work on any of them. I have 14 active processes!

rhij86 · 27/01/2020 10:54

@Catatemyhomework I've recently been accepted onto two but no work yet apparently. I have 25 active processes :-\

Lougle · 27/01/2020 11:14

Well done @Catatemyhomework! It's a lot of hours at first, but I'm sure we'll see results soon. I was a bit gutted that an issue was rejected but it's all a learning process. Another one was accepted so I'm up to about £26.

I'm having real trouble with it today, though. Sign in issues and technical issues. I'm really tired so I might take a break from it today.

justtheonethen · 27/01/2020 11:18

@Madre77 gosh that's awful. Crisp I can highly recommend as unless you mess up then the work won't just suddenly end like Appen etc.

themoneyshed · 27/01/2020 11:30

@Madre77

You'll be fine ;)

If you can tell me how much money you are looking to make each month I can guide you better onto higher-paying online work ;)

Earache2020 · 27/01/2020 11:41

Hello, lurker posting for the first time here! Thanks for all the advice everyone! I have signed up for crisp and Appen about a month ago and haven't heard anything unsurprisingly. But I have a few questions and would be very grateful for any advice.

  1. No new projects are coming up on Appen so I've had 5 visible to me (only 2 are appropriate for me as no second language) since I signed up. Does that sound right? Could I have signed up with the wrong link or anything?
  2. Do you think it's worth signing up for lionbridge. Although I use Facebook, Instagram etc. every day to follow pages I never post anything. For example the job for personalised internet assessor says you need to be "an active daily user of Gmail forms of social Media" so what does that actually mean? And does anyone know if lionbridge have been recently talking on new people?
Thank you!
