How long is your mortgage for?

I am 30 and I’m concerned I haven’t bought my first home yet.

Thanks Smile

Why am I almost twice the age of most people getting a mortgage on here Hmm

SimonJT · 31/03/2019 20:27

I bought a home with my previous partner when I was 29, I’m 31 now and in the process of buying my first home on my own.

Equimum · 31/03/2019 20:52

I was 30 and DH 32. We were literally about to have our first child. We’re SE, so 10% deposit was stupidly high.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 31/03/2019 21:36

22 in the late 80s. DS buying his first now at nearly 25.

lanbro · 31/03/2019 21:41

24, got a 100% interest only mortgage. Bought with a friend but then bought her out. Still have interest only to keep the necessary payment low but overpay every month and have paid off 25% in large chunks. 18yrs left but intending to pay off in the next 5 years. Was lucky to have got on the ladder when they were handing out mortgages Willy nilly as self employed now and would likely struggle

RiverMeadow · 31/03/2019 22:27

I was 20 but we've since moved and the new mortgage has 20 years remaining!

Donnadon346 · 31/03/2019 22:33

I was 18 when I first bought my first home. It was an ex army house and the whole estate was sold off, £99 deposit and all legal fees were paid. Bought for £38,000 and sold for £75,000 2 years later without doing any refurb. Best thing I ever did even though at 18 it felt far to grown up and responsible.

Brumcherub · 31/03/2019 22:39

Age 20 and DH 21. Both left school at 16 and saved like mad.

IMissGin · 31/03/2019 22:41

28, DH was 36 though. 90% mortgage.

IMissGin · 31/03/2019 22:43

It’s 4yrs later and we’ll be looking at about 60% ltv when we remortgage next year

FuzzyPixel · 31/03/2019 22:52

We bought our first in 2016. I was 26 and DH was 35. Our mortgage is for 25 years, but we're fairly convinced that this house is our forever house. It is big enough to grow into and has enough space for extensions too. We wouldn't have been able to buy in 2016 if it wasn't for a sum of inheritance, sadly. 90% mortgage too.

Willowsauntie · 31/03/2019 22:55

Last year, I was 27. Bought on my own in SE London. No deposit help, but my parents didn't charge rent either. I saved 1k per month for 3yrs.

beccy11 · 31/03/2019 22:57

18 (in 2000 before house prices went nuts!)

Oliversmumsarmy · 31/03/2019 23:00

18 Bought for £9000 in the north. Needed a load of work.

Never moved in as Dp moved to London because of work and we sold it for £12000.
Lived in rented for a while then bought a couple of years later.

Bunnybigears · 31/03/2019 23:39

21 with a 30 year mortgage and 0% deposit (back in the days when they handed out mortgages like sweets)

ShabbyNat · 31/03/2019 23:47

Bought my house/got mortgage when I was 18{1990} for 25 years, re-mortgaged in 2002 for 20 years & paid off mortgage in 2006

Aimily · 01/04/2019 00:04

I had just turned 25 when we signed our mortgage, it's a 35 year deal, we're in our 4th year now. I'm in South East so quite lucky location wise, because the further south and inland you look the more expensive houses are. Ours isn't huge, 2 bed mid terrace. We're going to need somewhere bigger in a few years, especially with DC1 on the way, we struggle to home all of our 'stuff' now.

It took us approximately 14 months while renting to save the £10k we did for our deposit, we were aiming to have about £20k hence the longer term we have l, but we fell in love with a rescue dog and landlord refused the dog, their house, their choice.

We put everything we could into savings, birthday money, bonuses etc, but still had a few luxuries like my OHs expensive gym membership, and my book habit, but we cut the weekend meal out to once a month and stopped having take aways so often.

I do understand it is location dependant, as I said above, we're lucky being in the South East as prices aren't too crazy, but I also hate hearing people my age saying how hard it is, sometimes you have to start small to get on the housing ladder, then you sell and use the extra money to get bigger.

Backwoodsgirl · 01/04/2019 00:09

23, first house bought in 2007 with a Northern Rock 125% mortgage. Mailed the keys back 7 years later, second house was a repossession we purchased at 20% of its value.

Shinesweetfreedom · 01/04/2019 00:11

18.Three bedroomed house on a private estate with integrel garage.
No I am not gloating.
I think the cost of housing now is absolutely disgusting and no wonder the country is in the state it is in when so very many can’t even get a roof over their head.

Spartasprout · 01/04/2019 00:15
  1. I'm 60 now though, it was much easier in the 1970s. I feel sorry for young people trying to start out now.
thenightsky · 01/04/2019 00:18
  1. Back in the days when you could only borrow 85%. I saved like mad and sold my horse to raise that 15% deposit.
