How long is your mortgage for?

I am 30 and I’m concerned I haven’t bought my first home yet.

Thanks Smile

AlexaShutUp · 30/03/2019 21:06

I was 36. Mortgage paid off by 45.

CrazyCatMamma · 30/03/2019 21:06

21 - mortgage of 25 years. Should be paid off in 2 years - yay!

Skiphoppa · 30/03/2019 21:09

19 managed to scrape together a 10%deposit for a 3 bed mid terrace £150k with my boyfriend (now my husband 13 years on)

gettofuckthrees · 30/03/2019 21:15

25 with DH
West coast Scotland, 20 year term

JustHereForThePooStories · 30/03/2019 21:24
  1. Joint mortgage of £425k with my husband. 30 year term, but hope to have it gone in a 20 year term thanks to being able to overpay.
smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 30/03/2019 21:35

I was 24, mortgage if over 23 years.

Iggity · 30/03/2019 21:37

Aged 30, bought two weeks before we got married. 250k house with 30k deposit. Subsequently spent 150k on loft and ground floor extension.
Mortgage paid off 14 yrs later ie 3 months ago. No financial help from anyone.
Regrets are I wish we’d bought earlier and also paid off mortgage earlier. We benefited for a base rate tracker mortgage for quite a few years.

SparkleJoy · 30/03/2019 21:43

23 is when brought first house. 25 now and we have 26 years left on it.

ValleyoftheHorses · 30/03/2019 21:45

24 alone, 30 with DH which was a 25 year mortgage but hoping to have it paid off in 20 by overpaying.

Ribbonsonabox · 30/03/2019 21:47

I was 31 but my husband was 46 and it was his first house purchase too! 20 year mortgage

blue25 · 30/03/2019 21:47

Bought my London flat at 28. Have a house now & mortgage should be paid off when I'm 48.

KittyConCarne · 30/03/2019 21:54

I was 21- mortgage term of 37 years, only 23 more to go Sad
Only achieved it by receiving an inheritance from a grandparent to get our 10% deposit together- never would have saved up that deposit whilst private renting.

RainbowMum11 · 30/03/2019 21:57

25, on my own but it was 2005 so before the peak of the bubble - did it up when I met H over a few years, did the same a couple of times, now XH and I have a house each, both mortgage free.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 30/03/2019 21:59

I was 33, bought alone and put down 50% deposit. I'm still in the same place 16 years later, £10k left on the mortgage and I could technically pay it off but I'm freelancing so reluctant to do so.

WFTisgoingoninmyhead · 30/03/2019 22:01

I was 22 my DH was 26 but he had one to sell that he bought at age 19. My DD and her DH were also 22.

Lemonsquinky · 30/03/2019 22:05
  1. But it was different in the 90s when we bought our first house. We took out a bank loan for the tiny deposit. The mortgage and loan companies were practically throwing money at us. I don't think we'd be able to buy as first time buyers like we were then.
StormcloakNord · 30/03/2019 22:07

25, DH 29. First bought last yr and away to move again. 25 yr mortgage.

We were lucky (not really?) and had inheritance for a deposit.

YetAnotherUser · 30/03/2019 22:08

My term was for 35 years but I overpayed and remortgaged a few years later, I'm not 35 with 25 year term and will reduce it a bit more as time goes on.

Momzilla82 · 30/03/2019 22:37

21- 100% mortgge, 25 years.

Second house 31 90% mortgage, 30 years.

cicciolina · 30/03/2019 22:41

I am 28 and will be buying soon, hopefully.

Where I am from real estate has been so overblown that only 3% of all buyers are first home buyers. A very basic apartment is in excess of $1 mil, whilst wages are stagnant.

Buy early if you can, but you are still young and 30 is not too old!

wildawake · 30/03/2019 23:01

29

flirtygirl · 31/03/2019 16:24

I bought at 24, single mum. 25 year term repaid when moved after 15 years as
(Married at 28) divorced at 39, moved to cheaper area 100 miles away and became mortgage free.

That was in the last few months and staying here for 3/4 years.

I want to move back closer to my original area as my mother gets older but I don't want to get another mortgage. I need 70 to 100k depending on what I buy.

Gammeldragz · 31/03/2019 20:24

I'm 34 this year and hoping to buy in the next 4-5 years. Had my kids in my very early twenties and DH has always been self employed on fairly low income. I'm currently a student and his business is finally growing - I'm making money through matched betting to save a deposit! Self employed mortgages are so much harder to get these days so we'll need a huge deposit and no likelihood of any inheritance.
