How long is your mortgage for?

I am 30 and I’m concerned I haven’t bought my first home yet.

Thanks Smile

28 but had expartner as garantoor

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 30/03/2019 06:17

My guess is that you have to get on the housing ladder in your 20's as your 30's is for having kids and progressing in your career.

It will be interesting to see what other mumsnetters put but I would expect most people who got on the housing ladder to have got on in their 20's

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 30/03/2019 06:19

OP - just out of interest, how come you haven't brought yet? Where have you been living?

Decormad38 · 30/03/2019 06:19

Mortgage has been extended as we have had work done so it doesn’t resemble initial mortgage. Moved house twice so it gets complicated.

HalyardHitch · 30/03/2019 06:20

I was 23 and am early thirties now. We were very lucky - loaned a deposit which we paid back. Agreed, this will be an interesting thread.

Nacreous · 30/03/2019 06:21

I was lucky and lived in a moderately priced area and got a good job straight out of uni so was able to throw everything at savings and buy when I was 22. I had a 25 year mortgage.

But this thread is probably going to have a disproportionate number of people who bought young, as a) the older people are the younger they bought and b) people who have bought and are pleased are more likely to post on this thread.

Asdf12345 · 30/03/2019 06:22

Perhaps a location would also be helpful. When I worked in Northern Ireland many of my colleagues had bought in their mid to early twenties, many before leaving university, I am currently working in the mid south and most of my colleagues are looking at buying in the mid thirties.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/03/2019 06:23

I was 36.
It's over 15 years.

Hamsterdancer · 30/03/2019 06:24

36 haven't yet and considering I am on just above min wage and living in a ha place I probably never will. Serves me right for having kids in my 20s I guess.

Ivegotthree · 30/03/2019 06:24

30

pipnchops · 30/03/2019 06:25

I was 21 when I bought my first property with my then boyfriend but we broke up and sold it. Then I was 30 when I bought again with my DH and we got a 28 year mortgage.

TwittleBee · 30/03/2019 06:26

Bought our first home (in the S.E) last year aged 24. We had only a 5% deposit though and now have stupidly high repayments.

Sunonthepatio · 30/03/2019 06:26

27, in the last millennium.

Squickety · 30/03/2019 06:26

21, but that was in the early 1990s. I've not been particularly clever with mortgages, moving etc and 25 years later I still have 23 years left on my mortgage Blush

RiddleyW · 30/03/2019 06:27

26 on a 95% mortgage and 10x income multiplier. My dad was guarantor

EmrysAtticus · 30/03/2019 06:27

28 and took out a 35 year mortgage. Could only afford it with shared ownership however. We are in a good scheme however which doesn't have all the problems I have seen mentioned about shared ownership. We own 70% and in 4 years time we plan to staircase to 100% and sell and buy a house the traditional way, preferably with a 25 year mortgage. I will be 34 then and we will overpay on the mortgage to hopefully bring it down below 20 years. Ideally we want it paid off by the time I am 55.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 30/03/2019 06:28

23, doubled my money but then married a gambler who spent it all for me.

Next house was 33, on my own, divorced with my 3yo.

GrumpyOldMare · 30/03/2019 06:30

I'm 54 and not bought my own home. Can't see me ever buying one.

Slapdasherie · 30/03/2019 06:31

Bought a house with my partner when I was 35, he was 31, can’t remember how long the mortgage was for now, and sold it when we separated 7 years later.

Bought a house by myself when I was 43, 25 year mortgage.

Yogagirl123 · 30/03/2019 06:31

18 brought very small studio flat with my now DH.

Seeleyboo · 30/03/2019 06:33

Son is 20 and in the process of buying his first house now.

CountFosco · 30/03/2019 06:34

30 is still very young.

DH and I bought our first house at 32. Can't imagine buying in your 20s, I lived in 4 different cities over my 20s, renting is a much more sensible option during the early part of your career when you move about a lot. We're now in our late 40s, have 3 small children and just moved last year. Our latest mortgage is 20 years term although we'll pay it off early.

BlodwynBludd · 30/03/2019 06:41

25 and had a 30 yr mortgage. Bought the next house and extended the length. Only 17 yrs left now though thanks to over paying.

CatsinSpace · 30/03/2019 06:43

My ex partner and I were both 25. We split up 2 years later and I took over the mortgage on my own. I more than doubled my money when I sold up a few years later.

Bought our current home outright. It's bliss being mortgage free!

I feel sorry for our young people who, for the majority, will struggle to buy a home.

yearinyearout · 30/03/2019 06:43

21, paid mortgage off by age 45. We only moved twice though (when necessary due to expanding family). We've also only had low mortgages in relation to our earnings. DH has always hated debt and just wanted to borrow what was necessary and pay off as quickly as possible (I would happily have upgraded to a more luxurious house as we could've afforded to, but he's the main earner so it never happened)
