We all have our frailties, acat.

I doubt there's one poster here - and I exclude nobody - who doesn't like to be approved of/acknowledged in some way. Even when it comes down to something as seemingly 'silly' as being sent birthday greetings by a commercial website which happens to have your date of birth. You may know what they're doing but people probably feel just that bit more kindly disposed towards them even so. Maybe even buy something - they do their homework. Wink And so it goes with MLMs.

These poor people are not only dog tired but are being pushed up a chain. You start off with the personal touch then move into 'some personal' but some added 'group' approbation. All of these silly 'Hun xxx' messages will have their effect on keeping people lifted up and in line. (Precious few will actually register that they're only one of hundreds of recipients - and if they do, they'll likely still feel good about being included in something.)

I feel such massive respect for those who've managed to escape. (And that comes from someone who was never too much sold on the parable of the Prodigal Son. Smile)

Eyespying · 26/02/2016 12:34

All our brave ex Bots have been able to think their way out of the thought-stopping 'MLM' labyrinth, but it's much easier with the right kind of support and guidance, and a good-humoured welcoming committee on the outside. Time and again we've all emphasised that no one should ever blame themselves, or feel embarrassment or shame, for falling for the 'MLM' lie at a moment of vulnerablity. Notice how the shill Bots tried to plant their vile propaganda on these threads, that MN members are only interested in taking the piss out of anyone, and everyone, involved in 'MLM.'

'MLM' propaganda is always an inversion of reality.

ambler21 · 26/02/2016 12:36

Eye when I was first looking for advice due to friends becoming involved in FL and worrying about their character change your blog was one of the few resources I found useful.

As has been pointed out a search for Forever Living scam / con / what you need to know / truth / review / issues / problems / cult / complaint / experiences etc etc only returned many pages of propaganda that pretended to be honest critique but was just another hard sell.

I found the resources on your blog very interesting but initially I must admit to finding the tone rather odd, verbose with specific terminology being repeated over and over. I did wonder what the agenda was and 'hey why can't this guy just get to the point and keep it simple'.

Your blog brought me here and more in depth research with the likes of Robert Fitzpatrick along with my previous research of Scientology started to bring me to the conclusion that there was a serious problem with these schemes.

After reading a lot more on your blog and what you wrote on here I slowly realised why you write in that particular tone and why you are very careful about the language you use. I also realised how very patient you were actually being with those of us new to this murky world and the terminology involved. Letting us take those first baby steps on our own and find out things for ourselves, with a little nudge in the right direction now and then.

Slowly I've realised why there is a huge difference between terms like MLM scheme and cultic racket or Independent Business Owner and adherent and how important our use of language is. I'm still learning all the time but just wanted to publicly acknowledge how grateful I am for bringing a sense of continuity to what the problem is and also thank you for the help you've offered privately to myself and I'm guessing many others.

Apologies for the essay. Also, how awesome is it that a Google search today for the above search terms brings back a healthier result?

TV / Botwatch and all the associated Twitter accounts and blogs, well you need a whole essay of thanks just for you but my breaks nearly over Grin

Carry on.

Eyespying · 26/02/2016 12:47

Many thanks Ambler21 As a messenger with very explicit bad news, I've always expected to be shot by some people.

Toobusytowee · 26/02/2016 12:55

Good points there about language Eyes and Ambler. I often struggle with what words to use on Bot Watch. I want to say 'adherent, cult, slavery' etc but I am worried about alienating current bots and worried friends of bots. I don't want to scare them off. That's why I'll sometimes say 'business owner', although I usually use inverted commas. I want current bits to read it and take notice. I worry if they see the terms Eyes uses they will think I'm over reacting and then run off. It's tricky.

acatcalledjohn · 26/02/2016 12:55

I don't know Cozie. I am not keen on excessive fuss. The BSing type sales people don't get far with me - they annoy me. When I am made the centre of attention I dislike it. Unless it's a long term close friend I don't care much about what people think of me, be it positive or negative. Getting a 'that's really helpful, thanks' at work is nice. I also have a colleague who makes a ridiculously big deal of saying thank you when we do something insignificant, a bit like the bots do, and it really annoys me. It's awkward, patronising and over the top.

Equally, the only reason I give a shit about a birthday email from a retailer is because it regularly contains a discount code/voucher and I avoid paying full price where possible I'm a tight arse.

Equally the 'so much love for...' or 'I love you' types of comments (and the constant hugging and hunning). They are so frequent that the word love is actually losing gravity in meaning, adding to the vacuous behaviour of those so desperate to be part of something which makes them feel good.

I do agree that this need to 'belong' is more common nowadays, and I think social media and constant exposure to all forms of media has made people so self conscious they look for constant validation, but I don't think it applies to absolutely everybody.

Eyespying · 26/02/2016 13:05

Ambler21 On a lighter note - It's very rare these days that I ever discuss what I write about with people whom I encounter on a day to day basis. Although lots of people ask me what I do, I'm invariably evasive. The word 'cult' ('secte' in French), tends to be a bit of a conversation stopper.

The under-whelmed reaction which the 'C' word usually provokes, puts me in mind of once visiting a pub in Leeds with a couple of friends, and one of them started to chat to an attractive girl sat by our table. What do you do?, he casually enquired. 'I work in a STD clinic' she proudly replied. She even produced a badge to prove it.

ambler21 · 26/02/2016 13:08

It is very tricky Toobusy and there's definitely a time and a place for each form. The audience is key, and how much research they have done. Getting the message across is the most important thing. I personally usually use the term scheme because it's innocent enough but still has that dark edge. I'm awful for always trying to see both sides of an argument, even when I know one side is wrong :)

cozietoesie · 26/02/2016 13:09

Well, acat. I did joke once that the first person to recruit Eye would more or less be given the company. Maybe you could make it a duo! Wink

I suppose it's a question of numbers. Some people may have the wrong 'basket' of frailties to make them an easy mark but I imagine there are plenty of others to be going on with.

And what would you do yourself if one of those 'long term close' friends tried to pull you in? Think hard about that.

That's much of why I have such respect for those who have escaped.

sminkypink · 26/02/2016 13:11

whenever the bots start firing off the amazings it just makes me think of this interview.

rayofhope · 26/02/2016 13:13

Throwing That girl really shouldn't be recommending those products for pregnancy. I never ever recommended them to any pregnant people.

We were told at trainings, not to recommend the drinking gel to pregnant people if they hadn't been drinking it previously. They said it wasn't because it wasn't safe, but if a miscarriage did happen (for another reason) they might think it was the gel (and obviously FL wouldn't want that press or blame)

Her page isn't very compliant, is it? Even recently.

Eyespying · 26/02/2016 13:19

cozietoesie I might not be a potential Bot, but we all have certain weaknesses which we can be manipulated with. My Ambot brother and his unseen handlers, manipulated me, because they knew that I would put my mother's well-being before all other considerations.

This is why I feel great empathy with all the brave people who have openly told the truth on MN about how they were manipulated. It still makes me slightly cringe to think about what happened to me.

cozietoesie · 26/02/2016 13:35

Indeed we do.

Annie65 · 26/02/2016 13:51

Ive noticed on some of the Flbots pictures of everyone laying down during a training session. Are they meditating? This would completly freak me out if I was told to do this. No way would I lay down on a floor where people have been walking, yuk! They do look like loons.Confused

cozietoesie · 26/02/2016 13:55

I 'suspect' that it's just being ritualistic. (Although I'll stand to be corrected if there are genuine effects.)

Ritual behaviour can be very effective in concentrating people's minds.

cozietoesie · 26/02/2016 13:58

PS - Sorry. There's also a potential element of 'letting go' and allowing yourself to be controlled into a group activity. That works well also.

Patzy85 · 26/02/2016 13:58

After having a look through the videos, I realise that most of not all regurgitate the exact same stuff on every one. Literally a copy and paste job. They just shovel this stuff down your neck every time, surely people must get bored?

The weekly webinars are absolutely identical to one previous one, they just change the font and images!

'Cultic' in every way. Drumming it into the downline. Making them change the way they live, eat, think and speak.

cozietoesie · 26/02/2016 14:02

I would be bored. You might be bored - but others? Constant repetition might actually be reassuring/reaffirming for some. It may be pretentious twaddle but it just might sound impressive if you looked at it with one eye closed and one third of a brain in gear.

Patzy85 · 26/02/2016 14:06

Cozie - very true. But the monotonous drivel they're fed on a daily basis would, I assume, be what puts a lot of people off.

I wonder if there are any ex-bots out there who left for this very reason?

I'm pretty sure rayofhope and cubic have both said before that they found it boring hearing the same stuff over and over.

Annie65 · 26/02/2016 14:13

Dont think it helps their cause showing photos like that, they come across as being very strange. Oops maybe shouldnt say that on here, they'll be taking them down.Wink

acatcalledjohn · 26/02/2016 14:13

Cozie, I did have long term friend try to sell me a C9 when I put up an innocent status on FB about needing a detox (yes, I know it's a myth). I went off on one. Some days/weeks later I posted a link to an article about MLMs and she went down the 'I know it's aimed at me' route. I went off on another one, and vey firmly told her that my beliefs are as they are, and to leave me to post what I want on my own timeline, just like I leave her to post her stuff.

We are still friends, we do not talk about FL at all. When she gets out I'll be there for her. I actively support her when it comes to her real job, but u refuse to engage about this scam. I've said my piece, it's up to her to discover it for herself if she does not want to take my word for it.

If you happen to be in the FB group, I did recently post about her upline bot who is a business coach of some sort who can help people achieve financial freedom. The irony is, however, that she hasn't gotten to financial freedom herself yet. HmmAngry

And I have a feeling I'm going to meet that upline bot in the near future (not through choice may I add). It's going to be hard to keep calm.

sminkypink · 26/02/2016 14:17

yes it's repetitive, 'Nathan Guys' is just repeating scripts from Go Pro. Because there is nothing to the 'business', nothing to it.

sminkypink · 26/02/2016 14:20

yes and all of these business coaches who obviously don't have 'financial freedom' (whatever that is) claimimng to teaching people to gain; financial freedom.
'Yeah mate, i'm gonna teach you open heart surgery, I qualify as a surgeon, in, well... I haven't actually started medical school yet. see, the trainings not as important as my dream yeah, I believe I can do it, yeah.'

acatcalledjohn · 26/02/2016 14:26

"I used to watch Casualty and Holby City all the time"

Patzy85 · 26/02/2016 14:35

They also mention that they're paid "royalty income for life". HOW?! Hmm

Seriously can anyone explain that one to me.
