This thread is loosely linked to several previous ones on the same topic.

We live in a society that makes it horribly easy to get into debt but makes it incredibly hard to admit you have a problem and even harder to get out of debt.
Everybody is welcome to share problems, ideas, solutions, but not be judgemental please

I am not in debt, any more.
Here is a link to some spreadsheets that might help explain how
SPREADSHEETS-for-Debt-Control-Budgeting-Mortgages-etc

and lots of people use this
YouNeedABudget

The important things to remember are

  • yesterday is as past as the Crimean War
( we will not judge how you got into debt, but we will support you on the way out )
  • this is an anonymous forum
( we will not tell your employer, family or friends of the reality of your numbers and we are here day and night )
  • this thread is about supporting people through the huge mindset changes needed to come out of debt
( feel free to offload all of the feelings that drive you to want to spend, that make it hard to save and that generally make life crap at times, including getting those closest to you to recognise the changes needed )

Join in, bare your soul and come out the other end.
Its worth it.
You are worth it
The long term results for you, your partner, your children, and your friends and family are worth it.

I've been wondering about changing banks simply for the £100 switch fee
By I'm actually happy with my bank!!

Ta1kinpeece · 02/11/2016 17:04

Cozie
The Santander 123 account is the only on of the charging accounts that is worth it - according to MSE
things like damaged phone insurance are standard in most household insurance policies certainly is in mine, but DD was drunk at the time so the claim would be rejected
Also the banks that give you money to switch - why would they do that unless they think they will make more than that out of you in the following year.
Banks are utter bastards. Take anything they say with a large handful of salt.

cozietoesie · 02/11/2016 17:26

Good.Smile I'll steer him there.

(If there was to be a campaign on 'Don't listen to inertia sellers', DBro would be their poster boy. He's ruthless. Ruthless. Grin I'll confess to some occasional twinges of guilt when I switch, but that's my soft underbelly thinking. Wink They really don't care about individuals, do they?)

Badders123 · 03/11/2016 13:02

Soooo
So far this week my dental work has been £250 and my car broke down and I had to have a new battery which was £100
Sad
Oh well
We hope to sell the boys old iPads - is cex the best place?

cozietoesie · 03/11/2016 13:33

Oh Dear.

I'm afraid that I don't know the best place to sell old iPads. Do you think they're worth much?

Badders123 · 03/11/2016 13:35

Checking on eBay I'm working on £100 each

cozietoesie · 03/11/2016 13:41

That's not inconsiderable.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/11/2016 18:24

I switch bank accounts all the time. I'm running out of banks to switch to now.

I got accepted for tsb this week so that's an extra £100.

Badders123 · 07/11/2016 14:43

Only got £140 for both iPads
Oh, well
I'm giving up my job at the end of December (so I will get paid til end of Jan)
Too difficult with Mum and with dh away so much
Still got £100 worth of dental work to be done this month too Sad

Ta1kinpeece · 07/11/2016 14:46

£140 is better than nothing I guess

cozietoesie · 07/11/2016 15:15

That's not bad, really. Smile

Badders123 · 07/11/2016 15:23

could be worse I guess 😊
Dh and I have a plan For next year; (ha ha)

Keep £1k in emergency fund
Pay off cc by end of 0% period
Dh to stop going into his overdraft
arrange a new mortgage deal in August

If we do all that I will be pleased 😊

cozietoesie · 07/11/2016 15:35

Do you think that's achievable? I mean - are you all in the right way frame of mind for it?

cozietoesie · 07/11/2016 15:36

(I have no idea where that 'way' came from. My autocorrect reminding me it's around, I guess.)

Badders123 · 07/11/2016 15:40

I think so.
Dh really wants to get the cc paid off asap and I agree
It will mean one uk holiday next year but we are ok with that
My car will need replacing in A couple of years so need to start saving for that too
It's 11 years Old now and starting to get a bit.....idiosyncratic 😊

cozietoesie · 07/11/2016 16:12

I know that feeling. A friend of mine has a 'thing' about switching his car off at long lights. It makes me twitch because I had a series of cars that turning on the engine and it working was a matter for prayerful speculation. When he switches the engine on again and it works, I always breathe a little sigh of relief. Smile

Badders123 · 07/11/2016 16:26

well it's had a new battery last week so hopefully it will get through its mot in December 😲

Badders123 · 09/11/2016 17:08

Scrap that!
My plan is now to live on a remote Scottish island

Toberich · 10/11/2016 08:09

Happy (pay) day another annual liability paid in full slightly painfully but a final lump sum from salary that there is no way I could have afforded last year due to other commitments now paid off. Delighted. Means I can pay off family member as soon as Xmas savings arrive.

Wow this snowball stuff really works (eventually) 😃

cozietoesie · 10/11/2016 10:30

Well done! Smile Looks like you're closing on that sweet point now?

Toberich · 11/11/2016 21:01

Yep ! And in true snowball style I've also paid the family member 4 months early 🙂🙂had some Xmas savings which "matured" 😂(Notice deposit !) so instead of blowing it all paid half over to fully pay last loan...

God I can't believe it I'm finally here (halfway !) only 2 normal loans left & mortgage. Will start hammering the loans after Xmas. We now have about 800 spare a month omg. Happened so fast !!!!

Toberich · 11/11/2016 21:04

When I say "already" I mean after 3 years of frugality & 8 years of financial stress.

Maverick66 · 11/11/2016 21:23

Just to say this is a very helpful thread.

cozietoesie · 11/11/2016 21:26

Bet it felt so good to repay the family member? Smile

Well done you all.

cozietoesie · 11/11/2016 21:37

Glad you find it encouraging, Maverick. Smile
