This thread is loosely linked to several previous ones on the same topic.

We live in a society that makes it horribly easy to get into debt but makes it incredibly hard to admit you have a problem and even harder to get out of debt.
Everybody is welcome to share problems, ideas, solutions, but not be judgemental please

I am not in debt, any more.
Here is a link to some spreadsheets that might help explain how
SPREADSHEETS-for-Debt-Control-Budgeting-Mortgages-etc

and lots of people use this
YouNeedABudget

The important things to remember are

  • yesterday is as past as the Crimean War
( we will not judge how you got into debt, but we will support you on the way out )
  • this is an anonymous forum
( we will not tell your employer, family or friends of the reality of your numbers and we are here day and night )
  • this thread is about supporting people through the huge mindset changes needed to come out of debt
( feel free to offload all of the feelings that drive you to want to spend, that make it hard to save and that generally make life crap at times, including getting those closest to you to recognise the changes needed )

Join in, bare your soul and come out the other end.
Its worth it.
You are worth it
The long term results for you, your partner, your children, and your friends and family are worth it.

Well done April maybe ring your bank & tell them about your plan etc ask them to honour it ?

Tip I know but I'm worried as the loans are with debt managers they could turn nasty so might be better to get them off them when I can. One in particular has been v difficult to deal with !

cozietoesie · 21/07/2016 08:51

It's a difficult one. Some people are better with a plan which may not be so financially advantageous but is easier for them to live with. As long as they stick to it........

(I'm better, for example, in times of financial stringency to endure truly savage economies for a shorter period - but that's just me. Other people, who might have more discipline for a longer haul, can be a bit more permissive with expenditure and come out fine in the end. That wouldn't work for me but Hey Ho.)

As I said, as long as you can stick to it...........

Badders123 · 21/07/2016 14:01

Hmm
Don't know.
Our debt from our money pit of a house is all on a 0% cc. It's £10k :(
We will just keep getting another 0% deal til it's paid off.
We are hoping to really throw some money at it for the next year and see what the balance is at the end.
So uk holiday again next year - can't complain....weather has been AMAZING 😀☀️👍🏻 this year
No major spends (some planned but now cancelled) unless the roof falls in or something wouldn't bloody surprise me!
Really will need to budget at Xmas too.
And pray my car keeps going for another couple of years at least!!
We do have £500 in savings now which is a plus :)

Toberich
If you are not behind on repayments tell them to burger off.
The Financial ombudsman takes a very, very dim view of enforcement of loans that should possibly never have been granted.
Keep paying them a bit every month and any extra you can in between and they will soon be in the past.

April
£39k sounds a lot, but what really matters are the terms and the interest rates.
Your friend who has been bankrupt twice is hopefully not at all blase about the damage it can do to your career prospects so will help you to be thorough and cautious.
Work out which debts are the most urgent (high interest, high penalty) and which can be left to tick over on a standing order.
Once you have them listed out - and have support from the professionals - it really does get easier.

Toberich · 22/07/2016 01:37

Thanks tip but not in uk. One loan was €330 pm, badgered& threatened (and had to engage a solicitor not to have a judgment against me !) until I finally got them to agree to €250 pm on a 10k loan, 6k left - hardly much lee way there. Anyhoo paying it off now & will be delighted to see the back of it !!

Toberich · 22/07/2016 01:39

Should add also both working, both civil/public servants earning ok wages but treated like god knows what throwing money away ev night. Never mind not many options around here than to pay back 100% and will do so 😬💆🏻💆🏻

cozietoesie · 22/07/2016 06:33

You're getting there though. Smile

You must have a great deal of discipline.

Toberich · 22/07/2016 09:22

Thanks cozie - I was thinking the same as I packed my work lunch - half a tin of beans with bread &butter & fruit. Poured lidl Diet Coke into my Stanley bottle for a Friday treat 😃 It was less discipline & more the fear of no lunch as I thought no cash left but turns out I have €12 in my account oh what joy 😃

cozietoesie · 22/07/2016 09:34

I go to LIDL from choice, these days. Smile

You're doing well though - as are all those who are budgeting ferociously. I know what it's like.

Toberich · 22/07/2016 16:43

Lidl forever :) although I sometimes top up in Tesco for washing liquid etc

Just set up an online 7 day notice deposit account. Determined to crack this 1k savings thing !!

Badders123 · 22/07/2016 16:49

We do aldi and asda - no lidl near me sadly
Well had a fab holiday
Weather amazing
Lovely place
BUT
spent about £40 just on ice creams GrinShock
More decorating next week to sort out ds1s bedroom

Toberich · 22/07/2016 17:25

Badders just forget about the cost of the ice cream ! I beat myself up on hols for spending 10 times the amount on wine in a restaurant that I could have bought in supermarket and drank in apartment after the meal. I am addicted to being frugal now. 😃

Toberich · 22/07/2016 17:28

Does anyone know best place to buy perfume ?

Badders123 · 22/07/2016 17:45

I've found amazon pretty cheap

cozietoesie · 22/07/2016 17:56

Don't worry, Badders. You had a good holiday and that's what's important. Smile

Badders123 · 22/07/2016 18:17

Toberich · 22/07/2016 23:21

Have you tried step change or
Christians against poverty? (Cap)
That seems a high repayment amount....
