I've been sucked into forever living!! Why do I feel like the bad guy?

Recently an acquaintance emailed me to ask if I could 'help' her by trying a few products and giving her some feedback. Being the nice person I am I agreed. When the bag of samples turned up the penny dropped and i realised that she's trying to sell them to me (I'm naive I know!). I thought id just buy a little bubble bath. Its fucking 14 quid! No way. I'm sending the bag back and pleading eczema. Does this whole company operate by guilting friends and family into purchasing crap quality at ridic prices?

I've scanned my fb and there's nothing. I'm so disappointed. There was someone a year ago that put pictures up of some amazing mascara that made your lashes look so much longer etc there was a before and after pic - they just looked all clumpy to me. You know the kind of cheap mascara 15 year olds wear? Looked like that.

daftyburd · 04/06/2015 20:16

I have a FL FB friend. She used to do Arbonne but has switched. The FL spam is so superior to the Arbonne. A few weeks ago she was at a FL jaunt in Tenerife. All pics round the pool with their laptops.

I have an aloe vera plant. It fills all my aloe vera needs. Last week it was a huge book she was selling all about aloe vera.

Melonfool · 04/06/2015 20:21

I have a Pampered Chef but she's fairly quiet, no motivational stuff at all. And I live too far away to be pressed into parties.

Stitchintime1 · 04/06/2015 20:22

Do they make any money at all? My friend is constantly going on courses and making levels but I don't know what it means.

Coincidenceschmoincidence · 04/06/2015 20:28

Why does nobody else have a herbal life friend! You're missing out. It's a proper gift. They were all on a special themed cruise just last week.

Today - learn to earn at one of their wellness seminars. Confused

Stitchintime1 · 04/06/2015 20:33

I've just googled Pampered Chef and rather fancied some serving platter. Then I saw it cost £45. Unbelievable.

CoogerAndDark · 04/06/2015 20:37

I've only had to dodge Betterware, by flatly refusing to befriend the relations who flog it. And avoiding them as much as possible in rl.

PennyPinkleton · 04/06/2015 20:42

I have a younique FB friend who is off to Jamaica for 5 days on her own with other younique nuts
It's all a bit 'emperors new clothes' and they are out in force. Can't wait until it all runs out of steam, fed up of the constant postings

Never heard of this, feel deflated. Off to have a look on FB!

NorbertDentressangle · 04/06/2015 20:48

At least with Pampered Chef I suppose the products at least do what they claim to be (albeit at a cost!!) and will continue to do so for a lifetime eg. a measuring spoon will measure, a serving platter can be used to serve food on.

kavv0809 · 04/06/2015 20:48

Surely there has to be some sort of multi level marketing Facebook friend bingo here? I think dwinnel may be in the lead so far.

I have the following on my FB (clears throat):
1 x Arbonne friend (lots of pictures of white Mercedes that they earn apparently)
1 x Forever living friend (school mum I don't know well)
2 x Pampered chef friends
1 x Essential oil friend
3 that's right 3 Younique friends

Feeling blessed huns.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 04/06/2015 20:48

I have a herbalife friend. She is really normal though. Rarely mentions it.

I don't really understand herbalife. is it like slim fast but 'posh "?

BlackTrivet · 04/06/2015 20:57

You've just reminded me to check up on my FL FB friend (the daily FL/God/my husband is amazing posts are a bit much to follow but apart from that I do like her)...looks like she has moved onto flogging plexus slim - apparently it is amazing and her husband has lost 5 lbs (they both are looking to lose 100+ lbs).
I've got a Neal's Yard friend too...I do like their stuff though so that's not as bad and I do buy from her, just not as often as she would like.

Paperblank · 04/06/2015 20:58

I remember that women empowering women con scheme.

One of my friends was keen for me to become part of her diamond, promising me that if I put in a grand within a week I'd have made 10 grand. I had to gently advise her that I barely scraped by and if I had the money I still wouldn't do it.

Turns out she'd taken out a loan to join in on the promise of riches, so while her mate was raking it in she was firmly in the mire.

Mummify · 04/06/2015 21:03

I am lucky enough to have a fl fb friend. She is a wonderful, kind and lovely lady in real life, and like others I am fascinated by all the status updates. A friend of the fl friend told me that apparently they are advised to dedicate a certain percentage of fb posts to the motivational / my life is the best / come and live a better life by joining my team stuff.
Also - we have all got it wrong - it is not about selling makeup and body lotion - it is enabling their wonderful teams to reach their potential, work just a few hours a week and earn a 'three figure salary'.

yy 'love working in my pjs'!!! See that one a lot!

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/06/2015 21:19

Back when it was the women empowering women schemes I remember a news item with a cab type organisation spokeswoman saying they had a lady in her 80's ring them in tears as she put in thousands but was at the bottom of the pyramid.

Theres a relative of a relative on fb who does juice+ but i'm not on fb properly so cant see her posts.

She was slim before Juice+ so I'm not convinced.

It's all just ways of avoiding real life jobs.

Melonfool · 04/06/2015 21:31

Ah, Plexus Slim, that's what my Australian friend was doing. She seems to have stopped now.

I didn't know Neals Yard did it, disappointed as I like their stuff, but I just buy it in the shop in the local town.

SymphonyofShadows · 04/06/2015 21:51

I remember horrible shakes that were called Herbalife or something very similar in the 80's. My sister had some and it tasted evil. I wonder if it's been relaunched?

lastuseraccount123 · 04/06/2015 22:00

you cowbags. can't believe how many of you have MLM friends. What am I doing wrong? WHAT.

imo these MLMs prey on women who really do want to earn money while staying at home with the kids. it's such a con but people fall for it because they really want that.

(Apologies to whoever that is in the pic but come on!)

NorbertDentressangle · 04/06/2015 22:12

I can't believe that Herbal Life is still going. Shock

Back in the late 80s when I was at Uni a student on my course was trying to flog it.

Why she thought that would be a good idea I don't know?! A bunch of 18/19 year olds living away from home in a vibrant university city are not going to blow their grants (yes we had grants on those days) on some supposed healthy claptrap. We were too busy blowing the cash in dodgy pubs, clubs and takeaways.

DinosaursRoar · 04/06/2015 22:14

Ooh, my FL friend (ex-collegue - she's entertaining with her bonkersness) has been promoted to Assistant Manager this week and got an 8% pay rise! I'm not quite sure how you get to be only an assistant manager and get someone else setting your wage if you are self employed and running your own business as she claims in her constaint attempts to recruit people to work with her.

She's never actually selling the FL stuff though, it's always trying to recruit others to sell it, which is a bit rubbish for the 'point and laugh' requirement as she's not bothering to try to tell me how they can cure all known ills or other fake science claims.
