I've been sucked into forever living!! Why do I feel like the bad guy?

Recently an acquaintance emailed me to ask if I could 'help' her by trying a few products and giving her some feedback. Being the nice person I am I agreed. When the bag of samples turned up the penny dropped and i realised that she's trying to sell them to me (I'm naive I know!). I thought id just buy a little bubble bath. Its fucking 14 quid! No way. I'm sending the bag back and pleading eczema. Does this whole company operate by guilting friends and family into purchasing crap quality at ridic prices?

Younique fascinates the life out of me.

How can selling mascara that makes your lashes look like a old frayed rug mean that you are empowering women all over the world with your "army" of teammates and give you all these mega bonuses and holidays in America Shock WOW!!

ThatsNotEvenAWord · 03/06/2015 21:47

I have a few Younique members that I like to look at on FB, it really is fascinating isn't it! Daily dose of cringe is the perfect way to put it

CattyCatCat · 03/06/2015 21:49

Oh, I don't even have a Yonique friend and I really do like mascara.

NorbertDentressangle · 03/06/2015 21:51

Careful now Catty - all those Yonique sales people will be bombarding you with "I'll be your friend" messages now! Grin

PatriciaHolm · 03/06/2015 21:53

The Younique makeup is flipping terrifying, I had someone post a picture on a local selling board and she looked as if a tarantula had attacked her eyelid. Who wants to look like that??!!

TinyBit · 03/06/2015 21:58

I'm also lacking in cringey FB friends, but know of one friend-of-a-friend who is apparently Very Very Rich through Juice Plus (or was it Aloe Vera??). Big new house, fancy car, holidays, all quite suddenly.

Can someone explain to me how they do actually get very rich, when it's such an obvious scam to nowhere please?

Coincidenceschmoincidence · 03/06/2015 21:59

I've got herbal life and body by vi on my fb feed. One of each us enough for the daily cringe factor #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #lovemyjob

I had an arbonne "friend"
I ditched from my Facebook
I just kept wanting to scream "I can't believe people fall for such pseudoscientific bollocks"
It got a bit wearing in the end

WinnieTheWilt · 03/06/2015 22:05

At one point I had 4 FL friends - and my total friend number is well under 100. Who are they all selling to?!

superram · 03/06/2015 22:05

Do the wraps actually work? According to actiderm I can go down about 4 dress sizes and lose my csection over hang after only one wrap. £18 would be worth it but I assume it won't make a size 8....

RedCrayons · 03/06/2015 22:06

I've got a couple of Body Shoppers on mine. They're quite boring in comparison. Well except when one of them uploaded the cost price list rather than the retail price list. That was quite amusing.

CattyCatCat · 03/06/2015 22:07

Norbert but perhaps they will just genuinely like me for being me?!

I once got pulled briefly into forever living as I was very young and naive. I emailed the woman who tried to get me involved as a seller and said I was too ill with a chronic illness (sort of true.)

She said "It's ok. You're just not ready yet. One day you will evolve."

SlightlyJaded · 03/06/2015 22:11

I just looked at the FL website. OMFG, it's up there with Scientology.

Run. For. The. Hills.

The thing is, despite me knowing it's all shit and marketing (ironically I worked with said friend in a marketing dept), I sometimes catch myself thinking that, in comparison, my life is shit! They are only momentary laspses of judgement on my behalf, but it's funny how even the most intelligent of us (i.e., all of us on this thread) can sometimes get sucked in.

TribbleNamedDave · 03/06/2015 22:20

I have a FL facebook friend, it's great. She fills my FB feed with stories of her success and how amazing her life is. It's like watching a documentary in real time.

Gilrack · 03/06/2015 22:25

I've never even looked at what FL is (I unfriended the only person daft enough to start channelling that shit on my feed.) Wtf? It's aloe vera?! Buy a bloody plant, they're impossible to kill and you can have all that inner glory & outer gloss for a one-time payment of about £4.50.

I'm now looking up Younique and all these other life-changers you mention Grin

lastuseraccount123 · 03/06/2015 22:28

i'm so jealous of you lucky, lucky tarts and your MLM-hawking FB friends.

SO JEALOUS.

HootyMcTooty · 03/06/2015 22:31

I have a couple of Forever Living friends on FB, it's cringy but so fascinating

Melonfool · 03/06/2015 22:59

They have Yunique parties in our local pub! The leaflets they put through our door crack us up.

I was 'invited' into Amway years ago, didn't take up their kind offer. Their products were actually OK though. But these are all just pyramid selling schemes, they burn out after a while.

thenightsky · 03/06/2015 23:08

I lost a friend to Amway. It was awful watching him lose every penny his hard working father had left him to these con artists. Sad

listsandbudgets · 03/06/2015 23:13

For those of your without a FL facebook friend of your own. Here is the latest status of one of mine:

I'm feeling grateful for deciding not to be just average, but to embark upon an adventure that allows me to experience all this fun.

and of one of the others:

Someone you haven't even met yet is wondering what it would be like to meet someone like you

Sigh... I am clearly such a failure. Mine is moaning about the cat bringing a live pigeon in to the kitchen!

Melonfool · 03/06/2015 23:17

Sounds like brain-washing. Mind you, people who haven't been brain-washed post similar shit.

MrsEvadneCake · 03/06/2015 23:18

TinyBit the friend explained that the more people you have in your team and the higher up that team you are, then the more of the other peoples commission you get. But you have to make your own sales too. I imagine if you got in early and are higher up s team (supervisor/leader) then there was initially money to be made. However now everyone and their dog is selling it I imagine it's less lucrative.
