I love reading and now that DS can entertain himself for a while trashing my lounge is 8 mo I am finally getting back into the swing of things. But I always read the same kind of books and so would love to have something different sprung on me!

Here's the basics of how it works (thank you Flamesparrow)

How it works

[ Arti sits back and waits for the flood of recruits, hoping that she doesn't end up looking like a no-mates...]

morning girls
ashamed to say i too am very excited and agree that non fiction is ok.

love title OF MICE AND MALTESERS

cant wait to get started

poshwellies · 01/05/2009 10:18

If we are going with the chocolate alongside the book, should we have a list of who likes what (some of us may have allergies too)?

Anyway I ADORE dark chocolate TIA

artifarti · 01/05/2009 10:22

Good point poshwellies. Although let's not get too specific beyond allergies and the basics! (although FWIW I like Montezuma's Chilli Mango chocolate - you can buy it at Selfridge's )

Perhaps if people also email me their choc preferences and any allergies, I can send that out too.

MrsMuddle · 01/05/2009 10:47

OK, I think I've grasped this now. Are we meant to read the book before we send it on 1 June?

artifarti · 01/05/2009 10:51

MrsMuddle - not necessarily but I guess it makes it easier to defend discuss your choice. So you could send one you've read before and liked (or hated, I suppose!)

Gosh, I really should stop MNetting, get dressed and get to the supermarket!

OP posts:
aristocat · 01/05/2009 10:52

hi mrs muddle - if we've read the book already, we would know its a good one.

dont want to send trash do we??

LolaLadybird · 01/05/2009 11:11

Non-fiction too risky, me thinks!! I'd like to think I'd embrace whatever lofty educational tomes may drop through the door but, in reality, I often struggle with non-fiction however much I think I should/would enjoy it.

Maybe make an exception for autobiographies as a compromise (Ronnie Corbett not included)!

LolaLadybird · 01/05/2009 11:14

By the way, loving the fact that there is almost as much discussion of chocolate as literature on this thread so far!!

poshwellies · 01/05/2009 11:20

Oh,I think we should discuss the chocolate as much as the novels .

FlyingMonkey · 01/05/2009 11:27

Green & Black's Creamy Milk dribble

humptyNdumpy · 01/05/2009 11:31

I agree about sticking to fiction. With a very active (is there any other sort?!) 17 month old and a PT job my only chances for reading are once shes in bed and by that stage of the day I don't think my brain could asborb any political, historical or economical discussions.

That said, I would also also wilt at the thought of picking up a mush filled chick lit that would send me to sleep in a nano second

(I hate chocolate orange BTW )

artifarti · 01/05/2009 11:36

Am dressed now.

Okay then. No non-fiction except autobiogs. Chicklit ban stands though humpty!

OP posts:
humptyNdumpy · 01/05/2009 11:40

Glad to hear that arti

aristocat · 01/05/2009 11:50

agree with poshwellies chocolate needs a discussion too.

i love any but dont like any nuts [ha ha] in it !!
going to supermarket soon if can get off MN

Itsjustafleshwound · 01/05/2009 16:04

Can it also be contemporary - no classics???

As long as there is no orange or chilli flavouted chocolate, I'm good ....

MrsMuddle · 01/05/2009 16:26

Itsjustafleshwound, I was hoping to send you War and Peace.

As well as the genres already mentioned, I hate with a passion am not particularly fond of historical books, such as The Other Boleyn Girl, or similar.

I appreciate that lots of people like them, though, and I could maybe thole one, but I'd hate if there were too many.

Itsjustafleshwound · 01/05/2009 16:41

Now that would really be a waste - the kgs of chocolate I would need to convince me to read that would kill my postie ...

whinegums · 01/05/2009 17:02

Yay, book swap sorted then, well done Arti. The chocolate adds extra excitement too (no nuts for me either please!).

Ok, someone tell me what to do and I'll do it. Looking forward to chocolate and books in a big way!

Maria2007 · 01/05/2009 18:54

Sounds wonderful!! And very exciting.

Sorry I just barged in by the way, didn't realize doors had (almost) closed but am glad I was let in

Agree about fiction. As for chocolate- I love any plain varieties of milk chocolate!! MMMMmmmmm...

Oh and Artifacti- am not scary intellectual type. A friend and I (she's a fellow MNetter) are in the early process of starting a RL book club. We've also recruited one other member (also a mum of a 9 month old). So there's 3 of us so far. We're planning to meet once a month in central london. Planning to read fiction- but other things too (perhaps). If there's others who would like to join (as I said, not scary intellectual types, promise!) we'd be happy.

nkf · 01/05/2009 18:55

Have I missed the boat?

LadyBee · 01/05/2009 20:03

Maria2007, that sounds like something I'd like to do although having said that I might struggle with the reading - I used to be an avid reader (pre-DS) - but now find it quite hard to squeeze in so two things might be tough.
Can you keep me in mind though?

Shall we have some sort of price limit on chocolate being included? Personally, I'm completely undiscriminating when it comes to chocolate and will happily scoff anything, including stuff with nuts, fruit, etc etc. We don't want any competitive-chocolate antics do we

I'm already racking my brains for something to choose.

hmmmm.....

Maria2007 · 01/05/2009 20:44

brilliant idea about the chocolate!!

LadyBee, I'll keep you in mind about the book club (actually I may start a separate thread for that). I find it hard to read as much as I did pre-DS (how old is your own DS btw?) but that is exactly why I'm keen to get involved in stuff like this, so that I can get going with reading some more.

humptyNdumpy · 01/05/2009 21:01

LadyBee I think the chocolate price limit is a wise idea
