Christopher Brookmyre is the bloke whose name you can't remember Flame. If anyone has that one from this set please can you send it back to me when you're done?

I've read Clan of the Cave Bear (not as part of this) and I liked it!

So are there any rules for the choice of books here?

Flamesparrow · 22/09/2009 22:08

You have email that has rules in it :p

Yes, that is the fella - saw him talking on some BBC4 thing just now.

TrillianAstra · 22/09/2009 22:16

No chick, no misery, no Dan Brown.

Are scifi or fantasy allowed?

(haven't decided yet what I'm gonna send).

I read that Merry Gentry book you recommended by the way. Took me a while to adjust to the alternative modern-day setting but I liked it.

Cocodrillo · 22/09/2009 22:33

I have your book Trillian. I am posting to you anyway so will just parcel it up with the book I'm sending on 1st Oct. Fraid I kept picking it up and reading a few pages then giving up. Definitely very funny, but also a bit kinda nasty, possibly too much for me! (Realize I'm coming across a bit strangely Victorian here.)

Anyone got my Michel Faber book?

Cocodrillo · 22/09/2009 22:37

Oh, and Tilly, baby is lovely, thanks for asking, at that fab stage where they're immobile but full of smiles and personality and finally starting to sleep through the night. His older sisters have had a vom bug past few days, so hoping fervently that he doesn't come down with it too.

How're your two? Is DS on the move? And have you made it to any RL book club meetings? I have missed all 3 so far but full of good intentions for the next one - have read the book!

Flamesparrow · 23/09/2009 07:22

I think we need to throw in some sci fi and fantasy, but am prepared to be hit for suggesting it.

OP posts:
shootfromthehip · 23/09/2009 07:40

Flame, I won't hit you but may throw a wet sponge at you- pleeeeeease no sci-fi, my head may explode. And I always read the books even if I think they are guff but do end up moaning to everyone that will listen about how I'm reading this turgid book. Don't make the people around me suffer!

tillyfernackerpants · 23/09/2009 07:41

coco, ds2 is on the move, full on commando crawling which is v funny to watch! Its lovely when you see their personality. Only thing is I've been working very hard on 'mamama', and what does he say? 'dadada'. Dh thinks its hilarious!

I haven't made it to the rl book club either. And I've found out my old book club which kind of fell apart (maybe its me?!) is starting up again and that's on the same night so not sure which I'm going to go for.

So anyway, back to this book swap. I'm happy to try scifi & fantasy.

Flamesparrow · 23/09/2009 07:41

What about fantasy though? You need Robin Hobb in your life. Or even fairy sex. Or a bit of Tom Holt to laugh at....

OP posts:
tillyfernackerpants · 23/09/2009 07:41

I think the no Dan Brown came from me, sorry. But if we're getting a bit too restricted, don't worry about it. I would read it

Flamesparrow · 23/09/2009 07:42

(I am aware I sound a touch frantic.... am all worked up by people saying that muse and radiohead are the same, and greenday only do one song...)

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 23/09/2009 08:00

No Dan Brown is a good rule...

TrillianAstra · 23/09/2009 08:43

Flame I think I might rebel and send you the book I told you about the other day.

Well, via Psycho apparently, as that's the order.

Do you remember the one I mean? It might freak people out a bit.

Flamesparrow · 23/09/2009 11:32

Ooh yay go for it

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 23/09/2009 12:14
Cocodrillo · 23/09/2009 12:22

you know what, I inadvertently sent round a scifi book last time anyway, but didn't realize.

Flamesparrow · 23/09/2009 12:36

Ooh what was it?

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 23/09/2009 12:48

Didn't realise it wasn't allowed, or didn't realise the book was scifi?

(second possibility is more intriguing)

Flamesparrow · 23/09/2009 13:12

Just read the comments on it!!!

"The subject matter was dark, foul and generally quite unpleasant (I'm being rather moderate, ymaybe I should tell you what I really think of it!!? wink), however... I thought that the protagonist was a character that you couldn't help but feel real sympathy for and some of the minor characters were so realistic that the literally made my skin crawl."

I really wanna know now...

OP posts:
tillyfernackerpants · 23/09/2009 13:30

That sounds like it could be the Under the Skin book?

squilly · 23/09/2009 18:02

I love sci-fi/fantasy, but it's not that often you get an 'eat in one sitting' kind of story with that genre. Usually they're all the better for being one of three million parts that build into a gigantic world of unbelievable proportions (or perhaps that's just my sad, unreal brain!?)

I don't think I have anyone's books here. I only got one official book I think and one from Trillian. I got into Billingham as a result of this thread/club and have now read everything he's written, so thank you whoever sent the first Billingham (think it was last cycle of book club).

I'm trying not to read Coco's post as I'm entering another terminally broody phase. Sadly I'm too darned old for another, so I might remind myself of that fact and read the post again. He sounds adorable and I lurve that stage where they're all smiles and coos and mouthing at you when they talk to them. Brings back memories

Right ho. Off to find something a bit more challenging than Agatha Raisen to get you all going.

tillyfernackerpants · 23/09/2009 18:12

squilly, funnily enough I was thinking of Agatha Raisin! Have just started reading them.

squilly · 23/09/2009 18:17

I have a couple of the Agatha books if you want me to send them on. Just drop me the nod! Gawd, that made me feel like a spiv with a pocketful of silks in my pocket (Can you tell dd is doing WWII at the moment).

Flamesparrow · 23/09/2009 19:02

Who is agatha then?

(And what was the 20s woman solving mystery of diamonds in the first swap? I quite liked that...)

OP posts:
tillyfernackerpants · 23/09/2009 19:24

I don't think I got that one Flame. Sounds interesting.

Agatha is the Agatha Raisin books by M C Beaton. Very easy reading but enjoyable
