Second miscarriage in four months and looking for hope after loss

Esl17 · 16/09/2026 12:04

Just had my second miscarriage in under 4 months - MMC at 12 week scan after previously seeing heartbeat followed by blighted ovum found at early scan at EPU at 7 weeks (so another MMC). Now undergone both a surgery and tablets in such a short space of time. I just feel so sad and defeated, also wondering what could be wrong with me. I’m 35 now and panicking, one nearly 3 year old conceived with no issues, healthy pregnancy. Any one had anything similar and gone onto success?

@WarriorN thanks do understanding what you’re saying but my first loss was found at 12 weeks and second at almost 8 so I wouldn’t call either particularly early xx

@dairydebris this is an interesting way to reframe it thankyou, you’re right if either pregnancy had progressed they wouldn’t have been a healthy child, however it’s hard to think rationally when you haven’t made it to the other side yet xx

@dmf86 did you take the aspirin all the way through? I was taking it whilst ttc but stopped on positive test as there is some evidence linking it to increased risk of subchorionic haemotomas xx

Dear OP there is nothing wrong with you - these pregnancies were never meant to be. You know everything works because you have been successful before. After one successful birth I too had three miscarriages in a row. I just couldn’t understand it. I was lucky, the fourth was successful. It’s heartbreaking at the time but you will come through this. Try and enjoy your first born - they will get you through. Good Luck ☘️

yes i had 2 MCs (11w and 8w) at 41 and a healthy baby at nearly 43.

progesterone after bleed in 2nd pregnancy, from just after ovulation in the 3rd (successful pregnancy).

I am also of the view that we (collectively) gear ourselves up for disappointment if we assume every positive clearblue is going to result in a baby, even if we do everything to help them along. I consider myself to have lost 2 pregnancies, not 2 babies.

That doesn't mean they weren't sad. the first was dramatic and painful too. The second was at Christmas and felt hard in a different way - a 2nd MC made me feel like a statistic.

I'm also acutely conscious that it's easier to put losses in perspective if we still end up with DC.

Great that you and your OH have got good lifestyle factors. don't underestimate vitamin D too.

How stressed do you feel? how about him? I changed jobs after my MC and I think that helped.

Scorpion84 · 17/09/2026 15:28

I had 6 losses after my first child

it was 7th time lucky for me aged 37

a single miscarriage is very common , recurrent miscarriages aren't .

I had all the standard tests with Tommys after the third including sperm dna fragmentation tests which were fine.

The only thing I did privately was go to prof Brosens at Coventry where I had 2 womb biopsies which showed I had very low nk cells which correlates with poor implantation . I took sitagliptin for 3 months which is meant to increase stem sells in the womb . I then conceived for the 6th time and had another loss . Two weeks after I conceived again and the pregnancy was txtbook just like my sons before the miscarriages . I never had any of my losses tested so I had no concrete answers and I don't know if the treatment from Brosens made a difference. I took no additional meds not even progesterone x

@FrenchBean7 thanks for talking some sense to me. I do feel I’ll eventually come out of the other side but it does seem most people have 3 mcs so I do wonder if there is another loss to come!

@Mulledjuice thankyou good to know - most people seem to have either a single miscarriage or 3+. Yes both taking daily high strength vitamin D. We do both have very stressful jobs (both teachers in a secondary school) but this 2nd mc more or less happened over the summer holidays, when I was more relaxed. Unfortunately not feasible to change jobs right now 😩

I stepped down from middle leadership in secondary school- I had three miscarriages in 6 months while in that role. Conceived the month I stepped down and had a the baby on Wednesday.
I would recommend aspirin and progesterone.

@PaulBaker i actually stepped down from my HOD role whilst TTC (healthy) Baby #1 3 years ago so am just a teacher with no additional responsibilities on 0.8 - core subject though. Can you talk me through the aspirin and progesterone more? I was taking 75mg aspirin whilst TTC but stopped on positive test as some research suggests it increases the risk of subchorionic haemotomas? Did you take it all the way through? And did you get EPU to prescribe the progesterone? I’ll have to prepare myself mentally for that battle if the time comes again as mine aren’t very forthcoming - they didn’t want to scan me this time when I felt something was off and lo and behold another MMC. Did you take the progesterone from 6 weeks or from when you got a positive test?

Thanks!

Before I had my first baby I had about 6 very early losses. I was pregnant practically every other month. I also had a 10 week mmc after seeing a healthy heartbeat. I put myself on low dose aspirin and maybe it was a coincidence but that’s when I finally got my baby

HariboHippo · 18/09/2026 23:05

We took 5 years to conceive and then had an mc at 11 weeks. Then diagnosed with a polyp that they thought had caused the infertility and the mc. It was removed and I got pg again eventually but my cervix opened at 17 weeks and we lost another one. Third time I had given up and wasnt even trying but once confirmed I got cyclogest progesterone pessarys and aspirin, plus a cerclage at 13 weeks. I ended up with pre eclampsia and an emergency section at 33 weeks but my son is now at high school and absolutely perfect. I remember those days as so hard - heartbreaking and all consuming and I lost myself for a while. Be kind to yourself. An amazing gynae for all 3 helped me enormously but we couldn’t face it again so my sons an only. I know I’m lucky to have him.

I had both prescriptions separately from a private doctor (happy to DM) and my thoughts with EPU were it’s better to beg for forgiveness p than ask for permission. I took both once I had conceived- I did take progesterone for the first 16 weeks

fiveyo · 19/09/2026 04:36

I had two miscarriages in fairly quick succession after my 1st child. Both around 8 weeks. I got pregnant again quickly and that pregnancy resulted in my now almost 3yo (who incidentally got me up an hour ago because he’s not been very well and his sleep is buggered up 🙄).

Good luck

@fiveyo thanks good to hear from people who have 2 as most people seem to have 3 or more I’m almost convinced I’m due another!

Yes from ovulation until I was ready to give birth. I’ve had two healthy pregnancies and taken low dose aspirin throughout

I had multiple miscarriages between 32 and 38. I had endometriosis so had a lot of treatment and fertility support but eventually decided to give up. Since we had no problem conceiving but my body just struggled to maintain a pregnancy I didn’t don’t want to go through IVF. Voluntarily putting my body through the intense hormone cycles was a risk because my ovaries were prone to overstimulation with the smallest doses of drugs.

So we planned a different future, booked a holiday of a lifetime ( my DH had always wanted to see England play a test series in the Caribbean) it took a bit of planning. Six weeks before we were due to fly out I found out I was pregnant. I didn’t hold out much hope and my GP organised a couple of scans before we flew out. The first at 6 weeks showed a pole with a heart beat. The second at 8 weeks showed an embryo, developing well with a strong heart beat. He will be 22 in a weeks time.

It wasn’t an easy pregnancy, lots of complications mostly due to my age, but we made it and haven’t looked back.

Im not suggesting that you book a holiday or that miracles always happen but miscarriage is very common. At least one in four positive pregnancy tests will fail to progress and the number is probably much higher for conceptions that don’t make it to implantation. Early pregnancy tests make it harder to deal with since in the past most early miscarriages ( under 5 wks) would not have been detectable and classed as late periods. Testing wasn’t possible until 6 weeks and it probably saved a lot of heart ache. So two miscarriages today, although devastating are probably more common than you think. Thirty years ago a lot of my late periods would probably have been positive early pregnancies. I’m sort of glad I didn’t know about them.

I was six weeks when I tested positive with my DS. I only tested because I realised I was a bit late my cycle was 27-33 days so when I realised it had been more than 35 days and my sense of smell was off the chart I sort of knew I was pregnant. With so many losses I spent most of the pregnancy expecting the worst and it wasn’t until I had a growth scan at 35 weeks and my DS actually looked like a proper baby rather than an alien that I started to bond with him.

You are obviously able to conceive, there are lots of reasons why things haven’t progressed but it doesn’t mean they won’t in the future. My gyni is as convinced that we have two super fertile cycles a year and if you look at many families there is often a pattern of children all born around the same date or six months apart. Certainly in our family my sister and I followed my mums super fertile cycles. I am one of 3 girls, 2 born in April one in October, my sister had my niece on my birthday and my DS was due on my sisters birthday. I have two cousins, sisters, whose birthdays are a day apart. My DH and his DB have birthdays a week apart. And they recently discovered that my great grandmothers birthday is 3 days before my DS. If you look for patterns in your family you may see that certain months are possibly your maternal line super cycles.

This.

Had a straight forward first pregnancy at 30 then four losses when trying aged 32. Saw consultant after the third and was prescribed low dose aspirin. I stopped recording periods and thought to myself we might stop at one child. Then successful pregnancy at 37.

I would wrack my brains to think what I was doing wrong and wonder if it was stress. But then I would remember that babies are born in war zone and all sort of difficult conditions. I found that reassuring.

Last pregnancy was a very anxious time. She's 8 now and is still causing me anxiety (but the good kind because she's so brave and determined!)

Wishing you all the very best of luck.

PaulBaker · 19/09/2026 14:20

@Esl17 I haven’t heard anything about subchorionic haemotomas. But I would say say the aspirin (and lack of stress) was the biggest game changer for me and that was recommended ad hoc by the EPU nurse and I then got a prescription from the consultant. The NHS were a bit miffed but it did the job and they said to take it until birth. I’ll DM you now.

JLMA · 19/09/2026 18:30

I would also say just be careful with aspirin. It didn’t help me, practically gave me gastritis and it has hindered some people that I know. So just a word of warning in self medicating

Yes I totally agree- in hindsight my approach was a bit reckles!

I so sorry for your loss and completely understand. I'm 35 and just had second MMC at the beginning of August, no living children unfortunately. I'm currently taking a fertility multivitamin, coQ10 and an additional vitamin D tablets (I read a lot of places that you should be getting more than the standard amount of vid D if you're ttc. So hopefully it makes a difference.
I was also told that they couldn't refer me to the recurrent miscarriage clinic even considering my age until 3 losses. However, the hospital did point out that I could have blood work done with my GP after 2 losses, and to push for it if they said I had to wait until 3. My GP was very good to be fair and didn't fight me on it, I was tested for many things and all results come back normal. They also tested for various autoimmune markers. Unfortunately it looks like it was just chromosomal and one of those terrible bad luck things. I almost wanted it to show something was wrong as that would have the possibility of being treated.
Edit to add: I'm a little tempted to take baby aspirin with the next pregnancy from the first positive as it seems to have helped lots of people. At my booking app they said I would need to take it from 12 weeks onwards due to me having rheumatoid arthritis (very well controlled and not severe at all luckily), and the higher risk of pre-eclampsia. The only thing stopping me is I wonder if there could be some adverse effect if I don't actually need it
