I think I might be having a miscarriage

No sure why I'm posting really - have name changed anyway.

I am 6+5, very early days. Have had niggling pains in my lower abdomen for the last couple of days, this afternoon I found a good smear of bright red blood when I went to the toilet. None on pants (yet), only when I wiped.

I called 111 who directed me to call my GP who directed me to call the EPU at the hospital. EPU didn't answer but I left a message and am waiting for them to get back to me. Don't really know what to do. If they don't call me back should I just carry on? If I get a lot more blood do I need to be seen or will it just happen on its own? I'm very scared and sad.

Does your EPU have a walk in time on Monday ?

That's what I ended up doing with my mc. Bleeding doesn't necessarly mean a miscarriage and there are lots of cases where ladies have had severe bleeding and gone on to have a healthy baby.

I had similar to you and red blood when I wiped. It lasted all weekend until I had to go to A&E on the Sunday night as the pain got too much and I was given gas and air. Still had to wait til Monday morning to have the scan though.

My advice would be to try and rest this weekend and if the cramps get severe then go to A&E to be checked out but be prepared to have to wait til Monday to find out for sure. 6+5 is quite early to see anything on a scan but the EPU should be able to help you.

I should have been 12 weeks but the baby's heart had stopped at 9 weeks. My body clearly wasn't going to mc naturally so I chose to have an erpc.

I know this is a lot of information to take in and I don't want to scare you - try and stay positive !!

adventure's words are wise, OP. So sorry you're going through this. I've been there (unfortunately with a sad outcome) and the waiting is just horrible.

EPUs tend to be very busy on Mondays because of all the weekend referrals, so it's good that you phoned on Friday. Hopefully you will be at the top of the list for a call on Monday. Keeping my fingers crossed for happy news for you

Thank you both for your kind words. We've had a busy weekend, including a friend staying over which has forced me to keep my mind off of it (definitely a good thing) until now.

The hospital EPU which I left a voicemail for did call me back around 17:30 on Friday and said very similar to what Adventure has said here. She was very nice, she said that if I felt I wanted to go to A&E for a scan (EPU closed till Monday) then I could and should do that; that if the bleeding worsened and it worried me that again, I should go to a&e but otherwise to hold tight for the weekend and go to the drop in on Monday morning at the EPU - this is what I've opted for.

I've had no more bright red blood since that one spurt on Friday but had spots of darker brown blood for the rest of the afternoon as well as a low down period type pain (not bad enough for painkillers, just annoying). Saturday no blood and on and off pains. Today (Sunday) similar but have had more dark brown blood (just small spots) expect for a scary stringy bit earlier, again dark brownish and kind of mucousy, not a clot exactly but getting there I think? Pains on and off, not bad. Nausea on and off too - perhaps normal pregnancy sickness? Its hard to know.

Anyway I should be 7 weeks tomorrow and am going to the EPU first thing though I know they will be busy. I have no choice but to bring my 2 year old so will stock up on snacks and drinks.

I'm still hopeful, maybe that is silly :(

Not hugely helpful but from personal experience would think it could go either way for you. I have been pregnant twice, first ended in MMC discovered at 12 week scan, only sign (in hindsight) was a tiny amount of brownish blood when wiping at around 7 weeks. Second had a fair amount of spotting and niggly pain on and off through first trimester and am currently feeding my four-month old DD.

Hope you have a good outcome. I found weekly HGC checks reassuring in second pregnancy.

Ok, so I hope someone is reading this because I could use a hand to hold.

I just got back from the EPU - was there for hours. Had a scan. They found a heartbeat. They found TWO heartbeats.

Am all over the place. Basically they found two tiny babies in there, both with heartbeats. One was much smaller than the other, and I had another mediumish bleed whilst I was there (but still had a heartbeat). The other is bigger but more like 6 weeks than the 7 week I thought I was. I have to go back in a week for another scan and there was nothing else they could tell me.

DH is at work and was waiting for me to call to tell him what was happening but I didn't want him to be confused and worrying all afternoon (and distracted driving home) so I just text and said that they'd found a heartbeat but it was a little small and they need to scan again in a week. Will tell him all this evening.

Oh yes please Adventure!!! Was it a happy outcome? I'm not 100% sure what a happy outcome is - do I even want twins????????

Very I don't know what I say. I had very heavy bleeds with my first and she is a three year old now. It was a subchronionic haematoma. The heart beats are a good sign.
I had a mc 6 weeks ago at 11 weeks and had only a little bleeding prior to miscarrying.

Your head must be all over the place - try and stay as calm as you can !! What has your DH/DP said ?

In a week Blue - actually next Tuesday which seems a very long time to wait. They said I should go back if bleeding increased and I'm tempted to go back anyway if still bleeding maybe on Friday.

Am on the sofa wrapped in blanket, trying to decide what/if I should google. Will tell DH tonight...

You must be in shock and worried about the next scan. There's really nothing anyone can tell you I guess. Are you still taking your folic acid supplements etc ?

I wouldn't Google anything !! I did that when I was bleeding and it just scares you even more. I found these threads more helpful !

You could try calling the miscarriage association. I know you're not actually having a miscarriage but I've read on here that they are very supportive and informative and they deal with things like this all the time !!

That other lady who miscarried one twin and then discovered a living twin at already 12 weeks is amazing!

I can't believe I'm pregnant with twins. I don't have enough symptoms - maybe because one is failing? I'm hardly nauseas - less than I was with DS. No other signs really. Some bloating and my stomach muscles have already given up so I look fine before eating but already about 5 months gone after eating.

There are no twins in my family (nearest are my Dad's cousin has twins but that's not close). I'm "only" 31 so that's not it. WTF???

I had bleeding at just over seven weeks, like a light period. I had an early scan which showed a baby of seven weeks with a heart beat and what appeared to be a second baby of under five weeks with a faint heart beat. The bleeding continued for a few more days and the next scan showed only the first baby who was thankfully developing normally. I was told the bleeding was a threatened miscarriage and to rest but it was a case of wait and see. Apparently it is quite common to conceive two babies but only have one develop. I'd have never known had my early scan been postponed. Hoping things go well for you. X

Twins are definitely smaller than normal pregnancies - I only know cos I watched that programme on triplets !!

The bleed could be connected to the smaller twin I suppose but honestly if the EPU couldn't tell you anything then everything you hear will be just guesses ?

I can understand you still being worried though. I saw a heartbeat at 6 weeks and then still miscarried but all you can do is cross your fingers !!

I wonder if that's our best case scenario Yikes? I honestly don't know how I feel about that, I'd never even considered two babies. I'd much rather have one but also they is, right now, two living inside me - I don't want one to die either.
