I thought it was supposed to prevent it.

I'd be up for that, I'm 10 years into menopause and no HRT.

@EllaRaines It's a very common assumption that big pharma is peddling HRT to make money.

HRT is dirt cheap to make and dirt cheap to buy. (I obtain mine at the RRP and it's far less than a cup of coffee a day.)

The way pharma make money is by making drugs for cancer, drugs for weight loss, obesity, and supplements .

The vitamin and supplement part of pharma is £billion industry. More money is made from that than HRT.

HRT is a $20bn market of which the NHS spent £85m over the 12 months from July 2021 and June 2022. Big Pharma companies that manufacture HRT include:

  • Abbott Laboratories
  • Allergan
  • Bayer
  • Novartis
  • Noven Pharmaceuticals
  • Novo Nordisk
  • Orion Pharma
  • Pfizer
  • TherapeuticsMD

Well, the OP is not wrong making this comment about this board:

It's depressing to read Menopause section because only thing discussed is hrt. The labels of bottles etc. if you want to go through menopause without hrt MN menopause is not for you.

The reason women discuss HRT here is that many of them have useless drs who don't even bother to explain how to use HRT or the dose. Or they have been refused HRT for the wrong medical reasons.

If GPs had proper training and it was possible to see one when needed, forums wouldn't need exist.

Yet again, we seem to have a critical post aimed at women who come here for help about HRT.

And most of the women here have tried all the lifestyle measures first.
Diet, exercise, over the counter supplements, etc.

They don't work for everyone and if they work for you that's great, and you're lucky.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2023 12:33

Did anyone ever stop folk starting a thread about what they want to discuss?

Don't be depressed OP. Start a thread about it.

Instead of thread which weirdly seems to discredit something you don't want to or don't have to take.

escript · 02/07/2023 12:45

I lurked and read here for approx two years before actually asking for HRT a few weeks ago. I've been averaging four hours sleep, and constantly overheating, anxious. I'm healthy, exercise lots, and take supplements but nothing helped.

My point being that I did try the alternatives first, and from advice here (which will possibly work for some people) but they haven't worked for me, so I'm hoping HRT will help.

My smartwatch says I'm sleeping more already but I'm just under three weeks in (evorel conti) so don't know if it's possible to see much improvement yet.

Seriously? Have you never read a thread which is centred around those not using HRT, asking for experiences? It is overrun with threats of crumbling bones, impaired heart health, dementia, etc, if you don't take HRT.

If people need, want, or like HRT, then that is good, and there is lots of good information about dosages and forms, and whatnot. But what we are not allowed to discuss on the Menopause board on MN is not being on HRT.

SusannaOh · 02/07/2023 12:59

I don't see any reason why people can't discuss alternatives to HRT on this board. I suspect people don't often, because it's fairly easy to walk into a health store and get advice on supplements, they are available OTC, also lots of the other sensible suggestions - diet, exercise etc. It's all stuff that is easy to access info on and we can be in control of those choices. HRT is a whole other ball game, GPs can gatekeep it or are just woefully ill informed. There are risks, but they often aren't accurately stated. It's forums like these ones which are a lifeline for women requiring info on HRT.

I agree, those that use HRT get very angry and defensive, insisting that menopause is a malfunction which needs to be corrected with HRT.

Seriously you're not allowed?

Please

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2023 13:04

Do it now. Post a thread. Stop moaning.

I'm not on HRT and I'm good with that

^OR

Menopause without HRT^

lemonchiffonpie · 02/07/2023 13:05

Here's a couple of examples I found in a few minutes:

Has anyone gone through menopause without hrt | Mumsnet

What happens without HRT? | Mumsnet

They are few and far between, and generally don't last even five posts without someone racing on to tell us we'll all crumble.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2023 13:07

Well tell them you haven't yet. You're on here complaining.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2023 13:09

Honestly this just sounds like whinging. I'm sorry.

You are free to discuss what you want.

escript · 02/07/2023 13:14

I did get my advice from here for trying to manage without HRT. Though a dedicated thread, if one doesn't already exist, might be a good idea and useful for all.

I've never checked, but I'm not surprised the HRT posts dominate. As a pp said (I think) my GP is not useless, but a brief, hurried phone appointment (eventually) wasn't adequate and this place has been extremely useful for me.

lemonchiffonpie · 02/07/2023 13:14

I guess you didn't read or even skim any of the linked threads. It is great there is so much advice and encouragement for women who want to go on HRT, or have questions about their regime, or need support in speaking up with their GPs.

I am not "whinging", thanks very much. It is a shame women aren't able to share their own experiences or doubts on a subject that affects so many of us, without being issued dire warnings.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2023 13:20

Put what you've just said into your OP.

You're on a discussion board. Complaining " you're not allowed " to discuss something. You are.

I have seen how all the other threads have gone, thanks.

Not sure what your problem is, but clearly you are a big fan of the HRT.

I don't have a problem. 🤷‍♀️

One of those threads was 6 years old....

You have no ideas about my views on HRT I've never expressed it on here.

But you are sounding REALLY childish now.

Yes, it is a strange response. I can't imagine if there was, say, a statins thread everyone on statins repeatedly telling those not on statins they will all have heart attacks.

Wildandwonderful · 02/07/2023 13:40

I think this is a typical example of the old addage that correlation is not the same as causation.

This 'study' is not helpful in providing useful informtion for people to base a decision on whether or not to take HRT. I wish the media could be stopped from this sort of misinformation and scare-mongering.

Yes, six years ago. Same poster on it, issuing dire warnings and not allowing the conversation to exist without said insistence of dire outcomes if not on hrt.

Two of them were from 2021, one from 2022. It always goes the same way.

Can't find the one I was on, but it was in the last two years.

Not sure what is childish about mentioning any of this, but you have sounded a bit unhinged since your anti-vax accusation on this thread.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2023 13:51

I thought your " clearly you're not a fan of HRT " was really childish . As if I'd just suggest making your own thread because of that. Very tit for tat in the playground.

My point is you CAN talk about this. Especially if you are as robust as you are on here. Rather than complain. Do it. 🤷‍♀️

No not unhinged. But I stand by this is weird discrediting thread by the OP in the same manner as I've seen on anti vaxx threads.

Didn't realise there was so much aggro in the Menopause world.

escript · 02/07/2023 13:51

It sounds like a dedicated thread for 'people who aren't using HRT' might be useful. Some people can't take it after all (and it could be useful for everyone).

You could give it a try. It doesn't sound like there has been anything recent.
