There's a guide to the different types of magnesium here

That's helpful, thank you.

I've acquired two types, one doesn't even say what kind it is on the packet, but suggests taking it at bedtime. I'll have to check the label to remind myself about the other. Information just isn't retained these days!

Just found this thread. I'm going to give magnesium a go for my chronic insomnia, but I do have a question. How well does it sit with other supplements? I take vitamin D, biotin and iron. Any contraindications?

goodsea · 10/03/2023 20:37

The health food shop near me recommended magnesium citrate as it's water soluble. I've been taking it at bed time and while I think the magnesium element has been helping I have been bothered by problems with upset stomachs. I put this down to the iron tablets I was also taking (which did seem to make things much worse) but having read this thread I might switch types. Rather annoying having just bought a new expensive jar.

Mrstiggywinkle44 · 12/03/2023 13:04

I've been taking floradix magnesium since November and noticed a significant improvement in my emotional outbursts, anxiety. I take 20ml a day and it's equivalent to 250mg I think but I also take osteocare magnesium aswell which tops it up. And multivitamins. No hrt as yet.
If I miss a couple of days doses the mood symptoms come back so I always make sure I have some
It's also helping my son who has autism and going through puberty

May I ask if you are going to try HRT?

I take floradix magnesium
Osteocare and boots multivitamins (no magnesium in the multivitamins) no contraindications as not overdosing asked at health food shop xxx

At the moment no. My problem is I grow things, I grew a huge polyp a couple of years ago and had other gynae issues triggered by estrogen dominance so I'm trying to avoid it unless I really really have to. My doctor is really supportive and has said if I ever want to I can

leeloo1 · 16/03/2023 21:45

I’ve jumped on the magnesium bandwagon too - and have glycinate, malate, L threonate and now taurate on order. 🙈

@HundredMilesAnHour Do you mind me asking though why you’re taking malate instead of taurate. Looking them up taurate seems to be for energy and malate is another one for constipation.

lljkk · 17/03/2023 21:35

don't think Mg is making even a tiny difference to my sleep amount or quality. I've been taking it about a month, maybe approaching 5 weeks.
And the pills are enormous, hard to swallow !

@leeloo1 Malate is most commonly recommended for energy levels (it's the malate which contributes, which is why athletes use creatine malate to help performance). Taurate is recommended for heart health rather than energy usually. Citrate is the form most commonly used for constipation.
---------------
Types of MAGNESIUM

Magnesium citrate -- Magnesium citrate is the most popular magnesium supplement, probably because it is inexpensive and easily absorbed. Since citric acid is a mild laxative, magnesium citrate functions as a constipation aid as well as a magnesium source. It is a great choice for individuals with rectal or colon problems but is unsuitable for those with loose bowel movements.

Magnesium taurate -- Magnesium taurate is the best choice of magnesium supplement for people with cardiovascular issues, since it is known to prevent arrhythmias and guard the heart from damage caused by heart attacks. Magnesium taurate is easily absorbed (magnesium and taurine stabilize cell membranes together), and it contains no laxative properties.

Magnesium malate Magnesium malate is a fantastic choice for people suffering from fatigue, since malic acid a natural fruit acid present in most cells in the body -- is a vital component of enzymes that play a key role in ATP synthesis and energy production. Since the ionic bonds of magnesium and malic acid are easily broken, magnesium malate is also highly soluble.

Magnesium glycinate -- Magnesium glycinate (magnesium bound with glycine, a non-essential amino acid) is one of the most bioavailable and absorbable forms of magnesium, and also the least likely to induce diarrhea. It is the safest option for correcting a long-term deficiency.

Magnesium chloride -- Though magnesium chloride only contains around 12 percent elemental magnesium, it has an impressive absorption rate and is the best form of magnesium to take for detoxing the cells and tissues. Moreover, chloride (not to be confused with chlorine, the toxic gas) aids kidney function and can boost a sluggish metabolism.

Magnesium carbonate -- Magnesium carbonate is another popular, bioavailable form of magnesium that actually turns into magnesium chloride when it mixes with the hydrochloric acid in our stomachs. It is a good choice for people suffering from indigestion and acid reflux, since it contains antacid properties.

Sorry, some minor formatting issues above with the extract I copied and pasted.

leeloo1 · 18/03/2023 14:15

@HundredMilesAnHour - thanks so much. I ordered after reading the posts here, then got confused about it all.

I slept horrendously last night after taking 200mg of the glycinate, but hopefully I’ll get used to it. 🤞

@leeloo1

It may be that magnesium glycinate alone doesn't work for you in terms of helping you sleep better. It's roughly 5-10% of people that it doesn't help. I was one of them but I find it works well for me when combined with other L-Tryptophan - I now use JP Dream Sleep (I previously used a Poliquin supplement but it's no longer on the market) and that works like magic.

www.dolphinfitness.co.uk/en/trained-by-jp-dream-sleep-120-capsules/312737

I often take glycinate in the morning (if I don't have any malate at home) since it doesn't make me sleepy, so I take glycinate (or malate) in the morning then JP Dream Sleep in the evening before bed. (It's good to split your magnesium over the day anyway).

leeloo1 · 18/03/2023 17:22

Thanks @HundredMilesAnHour - I ended up taking melatonin at 11.30 as I was getting desperate, but then woke up at 4 and dozed on and off til 6. Waking up early isn’t usually an issue for me. 🙈

I took 1 capsule of malate this morning and will persevere with the glycinate this evening (maybe 1 instead of 2? 🤷‍♀️). I did feel quite woozy and odd last night, just not tired enough to fall asleep. I took it with my usual bedtime 5htp tablet… I wonder if they interact?

leeloo1 · 18/03/2023 17:24

Just googled and apparently they don’t interact! That’s good news anyway. 😊

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 18/03/2023 18:21

@leeloo1 i had exactly the same with the Glycinate- I slept appallingly, worse than the wakings I’d been taking it for! Multiple wakings and awful night sweats.

I’m now taking 2 or 3 in the morning, but I might go for the Dreamsleep mentioned upthread as still my main wish is to just sleep properly 😞

greenspaces4peace · 18/03/2023 18:32

so far i'm really pleased with having increased my magnesium. i can't remember the exact number i'm aiming for but supplement wise i'm taking 250 in addition to my dietary intake.
i believe i've noticed an improvement in my sleep.
with no children and being retired interrupted sleep really doesn't affect much.
i'm also hoping it helps the old bones stay strong.
the supplement is a calcium magnesium blend meant for bone health.

leeloo1 · 18/03/2023 20:14

@GnarlyOldGoatDude - sorry to hear that. How long did you give it before giving up on taking it at bedtime?

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 18/03/2023 20:34

@leeloo1 About 5 days I guess? I just felt so rubbish I couldn’t continue any longer. The night sweats were just horrible; they hadn’t previously been a feature of my perimenopausal package! especially as I was sleeping even worse with the magnesium than without.

I don’t know if they’re helping me at all in the morning, but I might as well finish the packet!

leeloo1 · 18/03/2023 20:57

@GnarlyOldGoatDude - thanks. I think I’ll try it for another few days then and see if it improves any. I haven’t had night sweats and am hoping to avoid them if I can - especially now I’m on hrt - so 🤞 I don’t get those. I feel like I could do with the benefits magnesium is meant to bring (brain clarity, better sleep, more energy) so hopefully something will become obvious. I hope you’re benefiting too. 😊

@HundredMilesAnHour

Thanks for the wonderful advice on magnesium and other supplements.

I’ve bought the Dream Sleep and the Biocare magnesium malate. How much do you take of each please? The recommended dosages seem to exceed 600mg combined but I’m not sure if that’s the same as the elemental magnesium. Can you help please?

@PurpleWalls Yes, the total magnesium stated isn't the same as elemental magnesium (which is lower).

I'd start just taking the recommended 4 capsules for Dream Sleep at night (30 mins before bed) and see how you get on. Then maybe add the malate in the morning and see how you feel.

I've found I needed to play around with my dosages and types of magnesium to get the best results for me. I religiously stick to my 4 Dream Sleep in the evening but play around in the morning with other magnesium. Lots of people say that magnesium makes them sleepy so they take it before bed but it has zero effect on me unless combined with other minerals (hence why the Dream Sleep works).

It's a bit trial and error I'm afraid as we're all different.

Sisisimone · 18/06/2023 12:01

Strangely enough I can't take magnesium just before bed either, it disturbs my sleep. I take it in the morning, doesn't make me sleepy at all but it has regulated my sleep so that I sleep more deeply and don't ever wake in the night now. Took about 6 weeks to kick in though

PurpleWalls · 18/06/2023 13:27

Thanks @HundredMilesAnHour, I thought that was probably the case with regards to the elemental magnesium.

Thanks for your insight @Sisisimone, that’s really helpful too.

SeasonsBleatings · 18/06/2023 13:29

My GP put me straight up to 75 when my symptoms returned 5 months after starting on 50. I have always taken magnesium citrate alongside as well as DHa omega which I find helps with my mood.
