H&B sold Mg Citrate mostly but This is Mg bisglycinate. I just bought it from H&B. Says to take 4 a day, so nominal dose of 1.6 g/ day, this bottle is only 25 days worth. I think that translates to just 212 mg /day of elemental which is far too little right? Is this shite & pointless for sleep, then since it's not Taurate or Malate?

I don't understand why you would buy this (but it's your choice). Just look at the ingredients. It's full of fillers and anti-caking agents. A good quality supplement like Barefoot is only an additional £3 and is such better quality.

Yep, it's a laxative. On the positive side, at least you don't actually have IBS.

lljkk · 25/02/2023 20:53

I bought it because I like supporting businesses in buildings near where I live.

So the fillers will make it totally ineffective?

Well you're supporting a £640 million business that is owned by a retail investment fund that was headed by a Russian oligarch until he was forced to step down last year. Again, your choice.

Wordlimit · 25/02/2023 21:24

@ghettihead what magnesium do you take?

lljkk · 25/02/2023 21:24

I don't know if Frazer james Cross & Jon Handley-Collins are nice people, either. Do you know them well?

I felt sorry for the gals at the H&B checkout. They always seem like not the brightest tools in the box, not sure they could get employed elsewhere. Maybe they could in current market.

So, the fillers mean that it's totally ineffective?
Or if the fillers are just incidental & don't stop the Mg from doing its thing...

If I double the dose to 8 pills a day, I gather that would get to 420 mg elemental. But would that give me diarrhea??? (I ask since other forms of Mg can apparently cause diarrhea).

PamDooove · 26/02/2023 20:22

Literally talking to myself on this thread 😆 I'll ask elsewhere.

I mean split the dosage so take, for example 200mg in the morning and 200mg in the evening (30 mins before bed). I take 150mg malate in the morning after breakfast and 300mg glycinate before I go to bed. But you can experiment a little to find what split/type works best for you.

There are different types of magnesium and they have different (to some extent) benefits / effects. Magnesium malate is recommended for taking in the morning as it can make you more alert (so don't take it before bed!). Whereas a lot of people find magnesium glycinate helps them sleep so it's a good one to take before bed. Avoid magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate as these can both upset your stomach and are often used to relieve constipation. Magnesium threonate can help anxiety so it's best to be taken in the morning.

Quoting this for @PamDooove

No, the fillers don't make it ineffective. They're just there for texture and stabilisation of the tablet. Solgar are a well respected brand so I wouldn't worry. I've never had any problems with magnesium citrate but if you feel like they're upsetting you're stomach maybe switch to a different type.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 26/02/2023 21:38

I think the magnesium is helping. I feel more refreshed in the morning. I had already busy, long week (with one work day ending up 15 hours). Tired this weekend but not totally knackered . Feeling hopeful.

lljkk · 26/02/2023 23:22

Thanks @Sisisimone

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/01/2023 13:05

As a minimum we should all be taking 400mg of elemental magnesium each day once we hit peri/menopause. It's best to split it across the day so I take some in the morning and some before bed. Magnesium malate is good in the morning and magnesium (bi)glycinate before bed.

I am so confused about all the different types of magnesium. Would you give a brief run down as you seem knowledgeable
And why is it imperative for menopausal women please?

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 28/02/2023 06:43

glad to find this thread as I’m peri too and have struggled with sleep for about 4 years now. HRT didn’t help alas.

@HundredMilesAnHour i bought the Barefoot magnesium but woke up in the early hours with the worst hot flush I’ve ever had (not really a feature of peri for me so far)- have you ever heard of this? Any suggestions? Power through, or try something else?

I’m just so, so tired. Wake up multiple times through out the night, and then up and downstairs at crazy hours.

lljkk · 28/02/2023 08:29

@journeyofinsanity,
I know almost nothing but the short summary I've got so far is:
Mg oxide (cheap, common) or citrate: best as a laxative.

Mg taurate : wakes you up
Mg (bis)glycinate: helps you sleep

I'm pretty wary of "all singing all dancing" drugs, as in that must mean that drug does nothing, isn't reliable at all. Instead, people are just wanting to give the Mg credit. So I suspect Mg will have zero effect on me: except I'm wary about that laxative effect which is reported for ALL forms of Mg when you search hard enough.

So I wouldn't say imperative. I have bad lifelong insomnia which gets ridiculous sometimes, so I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try. Cost not too bad so very little harm done to try it... As long as I don't get diarrhea.

Sisisimone · 28/02/2023 10:47

There's a guide to the different types of magnesium here

twitterexile · 01/03/2023 07:57

Mag taurate not on that list - anyone know more about that?

Sisisimone · 01/03/2023 12:23

Sounds like Taurate is good for controlling blood pressure and repairing muscle. There's an article here which explains bio availability as well

ImAvingOops · 01/03/2023 20:57

This might be a really stupid question but can magnesium supplements affect periods?
I've started this month taking the mg glycinate and I'm now having a really heavy period.
Now I'm peri menopausal and on HRT and it might be a coincidence but for the last few months periods have been much lighter. Anyway, just wondering

BestIsWest · 01/03/2023 21:03

Just commenting because I want to read properly later but I sometimes take magnesium glycinate at night but it gives me the most vivid dreams. Anyone else get this?

MrsDrDear · 01/03/2023 21:52

I am going to give magnesium a try after all of the great advice on here.

Does anyone know if it's ok to take while on blood pressure medication (amlodipine)?

AlisonDonut · 01/03/2023 21:56

You'd probably need to look at the medication with magnesium as a contraindication or ask your GP or pharmacy before taking it.

I'm not getting any vivid dreams. Still sleeping very well and getting up early with tonnes more energy.

MrsDrDear · 01/03/2023 22:10

Yes good idea, I'll try and speak to my doctor. Failing that I'll ask the pharmacist.

EqualFranknessWithYourLadyship · 06/03/2023 09:17

I’ve had three nights’ normal sleep with the magnesium glycinate so feel optimistic this morning
