Two week period- and going!

I’m fifty. Up til now periods pretty much regular as clockwork, though very heavy

Got this one a week early and still going, though not heavy, two weeks later 😱

Is this menopause..? Anyone else had this?

Seems quite early for peri, depending on family history and stuff.

Maybe you should go GP?

I’m referred for an abdominal ultrasound

DivisionBelles · 26/01/2020 13:23

Mine will be a transvaginal ultrasound. I've had one before, and it was fine.

EmmaGellerGreen · 26/01/2020 15:10

Still going here. Some days very light, other days not so light! It’s like playing roulette. So very annoying.

Topseyt · 27/01/2020 13:54

EmmaGeller, same here. I am on the verge of making another GP appointment to ask them about removing the Mirena with a view to helping me push hard for a hysterectomy.

This Mirena as a "solution" just seems shit to me. Obviously it seems to work for some people, but I am thoroughly pissed off with it. I was cramping in bed for a good couple of hours late last night. The whole thing seems so self-defeating to me now.

MadamePewter · 27/01/2020 16:56

It’s just miserable, isn’t it?

I feel so much better since it’s stopped, though nervous about what will happen when I finish the drugs.

Also a bit pissed off it took so long to get them

I've got my ultrasound appointment on Friday. Hope all is ok. No recent bleeding since the spotting shortly after my 16 day period, but I'm getting a dull pain on my left side (ovary?) and wonder if I've got ovarian cysts again. Had what sounded like a string of them, described as 'simple cysts' and they resolved on their own before. I hate going to hospital appointments. Terrified of health issues!

MadamePewter · 27/01/2020 22:00

Oh, good luck @mumsnoangel. I hate hospitals too, so empathy!

Least you might get some answers. And maybe a solution.... fingers crossed

I went through menopause over 15 years ago, but I am grateful for the current generation to be more outspoken about what is going on for them. Hooray for the net! Three of my friends have made a show about the whole darn business - on in Bristol bristololdvic.org.uk/whats-on/mid-life and in London www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2020/event/diverse-city-mid-life. Check it out if you are in the area,

MadamePewter · 29/01/2020 16:39

Hope everyone well. I got my ultrasound appointment through today; two weeks away but before gynaecologist one so that’s good

@MadamePewter that’s good news. I’m at the docs tomorrow (terrified of doctors so not looking forward to it). I seem to have gone into another period as really flooding and lots of clots which i assume/hope is my fibroids. I just want it to stop 😢

Topseyt · 29/01/2020 18:24

MadamePewter, glad to hear you finally have your ultrasound appointment.

AnxiousAnnie01, good luck with your doctor appointment tomorrow. Don't be fobbed off.

I have made myself a routine pre-bookable doctor appointment for 18th February (couldn't get one earlier, which is ridiculous) with my own GP.

I've decided that is as long as I am prepared to give this stupid mirena coil to settle, so if there is no sign of that happening, or if I don't feel significantly better than current, it will be coming out and I will want to be discussing alternative options like hysterectomy as a way forward.

Grrrrr!

MadamePewter · 29/01/2020 18:53

Thanks guys. I’m pleased, as I think I stood up for myself more because of this thread and so getting quicker appointments.

@AnxiousAnnie01 sounds awful.. hope your appointment goes well and you get some relief. I’m ekeing our these tablets and so far so good!

@Topseyt it’s rubbish how long it takes for a simple appointment. I think I stood the Mirena a few (three?four?) months but just found it so so bad. Sympathy

I think norethisterone is likely to keep something of a lid on things while you are taking it. I have been given it in the past to put a period off while we are on holiday and it has worked for me, though with a fairly heavy one starting a few days after I stop it on our return.

I hope it keeps working for you.

MadamePewter · 30/01/2020 00:50

Yes, @Topseyt, I’m happy that it’s stopped as periods have before with it, but quite anxious about the backlash: it’s been dramatic in the past

OP posts:
MadamePewter · 30/01/2020 00:52

I think o must have some problem with my uterus: belly bloated and feels heavy and full, especially if I bend over. I’ve been doing loads of fitness and eating healthily, so I should have seen a difference by now

OP posts:
Bouledeneige · 30/01/2020 00:54

Yes I had this when peri-menopausal at 43. On and off for 6 months after being regular like clockwork. Transexamic acid helped. And later HRT helped with the night and day sweats and non-sleeping for a little while. Good luck with it. My symptoms went on for many years - but in different ways.

MadamePewter · 30/01/2020 01:01

@Bouledeneige is it that your periods were haywire for six months? I could live with that if they’d then fuck off!!

OP posts:
Bouledeneige · 30/01/2020 01:24

Yes they went haywire for 6 months, with flooding etc, spotting, all over the place. No way to predict. They didn't completely stop after 6 months but they became way less of a thing in my life. Then the other symptoms came along and were a big feature for a longer time. Everyone's experience is different though so you will find yours is your own. Honestly my menopause was way more stetched out and life impacting than my Mum's or any of my sisters'.

MadamePewter · 30/01/2020 20:13

@AnxiiousAnnie01 how did it go?

@Bouledeneige I’d probably still take a six month flurry of awfulness. Though it doesn’t sound fun

OP posts:
AnxiousAnnie01 · 30/01/2020 21:12

@MadamePewter been sent for blood tests. I queried how accurate they would be as cycle all over the place but think i am actually now in the middle of an actual period. He said if they were absolutely normal then he would prob send me for further investigations but if not then he’ll be happy that this is all down to peri and we’ll discuss how to sort the bleeding. He wasn’t too concerned as my age fits with peri, i have no pain and my smear is up to date. He said my story is common and periods can go like this but every women experiences it differently. Not sure how i feel but do know this flooding is awful 😩 I literally dread standing up at work in case i’ve leaked on the chair and constantly worry about it coming through my clothes. Hopefully i’ll know more next week. Hope everything is calm with you xx

MadamePewter · 30/01/2020 22:56

Sounds like it went ok.. but I really want some medical professional to want to sort this!

OP posts:
mumsnoangel · 31/01/2020 12:34

Had my ultrasound appointment this morning and all looks normal. Huge relief. My blood pressure has been through the roof (stressful job and health worries about my dh too) so nice to at least be able to tick the gynae thing off my list. I think I just have to accept this is all part of perimenopause and thankfully my issues are manageable.

IslandTulip · 31/01/2020 12:40

Sorry only read your original post, but i had a period for 3 weeks and no signs of tailing off and the GP gave me a course of Norethisterone to stop it. She said i could get anaemic if it carried on. This then reset things to normal. I bled when i came off the Norethisterone, but only for a few days, then had a normal gap and now got my period again. Fingers crossed it will be a normal length. I was sent for an ultrasounds and all ok. One retired ovary and the other doing all the work.

MadamePewter · 31/01/2020 12:57

Oh, that’s good news @mumsnoangel: glad you’ve got one less thing to worry about now!

@IslandTulip, thanks, that’s really helpful. I’m on the northeristerone now and that’s given me hope!

OP posts:
Zzzexhaustedzzz · 31/01/2020 13:09

Another fan of norithisterone here. Well, it has stopped periods after 3+ weeks of bleeding and reset my cycle to sort of normal a few times. I didn’t realise at first that its an ‘old style’ contraceptive pill and also like being on HRT for ten days. All fine by me as it sorted me out. I’m 45. This fun started at 43.
