Well helloooooo fellow 40-plussers. Anyone else born in 1961? That was a fine vintage...
Despite being able to remember pre-decimal currency (Use Your Old Coppers In Sixpenny Lots) I still can't decide what I want to do when I grow up, and I still don't know how to put make-up on properly.

Snowbell · 03/05/2005 21:21

I'm 1961 vintage also! Very soon have to face my 44th birthday. Help! How did I get this old?! Any ideas on how to get through this birthday would be appreciated. I think I'm about due for my mid-life crisis. Have been thinking about getting my belly button pierced, so it could be starting already. Have recently started looking lustfully and wistfully at 25-year old guys!

Arabica · 03/05/2005 21:25

25? I saw a pretty blond 6th former today, I nearly reported myself to social services.

Misspiggy · 03/05/2005 21:56

Arabica - not trying to outdo you or anything but my DS 15 (!!!) brought home a friend who is in his year at school a couple of weeks ago and I found myself doing the girly giggling and twirling of hair whilst trying to have a conversation with him! Aaargh! They are rather pretty at that age aren't they? I turned 40 last Oct so I'm putting it down to midlife crisis. Its so true though....how did we get this old?! Last time I looked I was 16! What happened?

Prettybird · 04/05/2005 09:00

Snowbell and Arabica - I'm 61 vintage too - only I've already had my birthday (4 weeks ago today).

Can remember pre-decimal money: do you remember how some shops still used the "old" money and some used the new?

Also remember Pogle's Wood, Trumpton, learning road safety with the Tufty Club, the year when the clocks weren't put back for the winter, so we went to school with reflective vests on (and apparently the experiment saved loads of lives), Varie Singleton, John Noakes and Peter Purves.....

Hello, another '63 vintage here with dd almost 5 and ds 9 months.
Lovely to be in such good company.

almostanangel · 04/05/2005 09:53

Potty1 · 04/05/2005 10:00

You have to shout louder almost - us oldies are a bit deaf

almostanangel · 04/05/2005 10:02

LET ME IN !!! i will be nearly forty in october please

wordsmith · 04/05/2005 10:24

Hello fellow oldiemums. I'll be 43 on May 25 and have 2 ds's aged 5 and 13 months. Can I join? I remwmber taping Top 40 from the radio - holding the microphone of my portable tape recorder in front of my little transistor and trying to be really quiet!! Still have the tapes somewhere! Also remember the long hot summer of 76, and the Stylophone. And never mind Torvill and Dean - does anyone remember staying up for Robin Cousins or even John Curry?

Lonelymum · 04/05/2005 11:21

Almostanangel, you were born in the same year as my toyboy dh. I really am not sure you do qualify you know . Although I will let you off making the mistake about the drought summer as, although 76 was the very hot year, 75 was also a hot summer, but got eclipsed by 76. You see, I really am old!

Re pre-decimalisation, does anyone know what pocket money they used to get? I know I used to get 6d and then when decimalisation came in, my mother gave me the equivalent (2p) and I remember being outraged to be only getting 2 pennies instead of 6! No amount of explaining could make that right for me!

Lonelymum · 04/05/2005 11:22

Wordsmith, I remember writing about Robin Cousins in my teenage diary! You know the sort of thing.....

WigWamBam · 04/05/2005 11:24

Oh, John Curry, I thought he was wonderful.

I had a Stylophone, too - I thought it was the bees knees (well, if it was good enough for David Bowie, it was good enough for me

lettuce · 04/05/2005 12:02

hi everyone, just came across this brilliant thread, I didn't realize there were so many of us 'oldies' here!
I was born in '61 and so will be 44 in november, though in my mind I'm sort of stuck at 28.
For me the only time I actually realize I must be getting older is when I see my parents and how old they are getting. They live abroad, so I only see them every few months and it's a bit of a shock every time I see them.
My dds are 13 and 6 and they wear me out and keep me young all at the same time!

almostanangel · 04/05/2005 12:06

i did a sponcerd swim..and had my pic taken with david wilkie ..remember him??

WigWamBam · 04/05/2005 12:10

Crikey, David Wilkie! That's a blast from the past ...
