hi geordiemacminx , that would be good to meet up to goto that class. Hopefully he will not sleep through it!

geordiemacminx · 04/03/2008 14:24

Do you know where it is? Bellshill Road, past Tunnocks factoty, just next to Doctors - starts at 1, there are a few other tinys some have a little snooze but its fine - all very friendly and relaxed

babelove · 04/03/2008 15:37

i roughly know where it is, i def know where the tunnocks factory is! we will see you there

geordiemacminx · 04/03/2008 15:53

Turn right at the x-road, tunnocks on left, past old job centre, docs on left, I usally park in their carpark, its the next building up on the left. I will be the one looking harrassed with a wild enthusiastic 10 month old ds

geordiemacminx · 04/03/2008 15:54

Oh its £4.50 a class, £45 a term - only 2 weeks left of this term so ideal to see oif you like it

babelove · 04/03/2008 16:00

i will see if i can spot you! i will be the one who looks lost!

babelove · 06/03/2008 11:35

geordiemacminx - I cant make this afternoons class as the little one has some sort of rash so going to take him to get looked at - will come to next weeks if all ok

Paranoid1stTimer · 06/03/2008 14:07

Hello

I have never been on this thread before but I remembered the "bumps and bairns" and "north of the border" mentions from other threads where I have asked questions about Princess Royal in Glasgow and stuff so I thought I would put a wee post on to say hello!

I am in Glasgow and currently a sniff away from 39 weeks pregnant. I am booked into Princess Royal but never went to antenatal classes as I am so shy it's a complete issue so now I am terrified since I don't have a clue what to expect at the hospital. I am trying to arrange for OH and me to visit the "birth room" but still haven't got through. He's not happy I didnt go to antenatal and is worried about everthing although he wouldn't come to antenatal classes with me himself cos he is self employed.... Anyways, just thought I would post a wee message to say hello...

geordiemacminx · 06/03/2008 20:56

Welcome Paranoid.

There are a few mums on here that have had their babies at the Princess - I'm sure someone will be around shortly to fill you in. To be honest I only went to 1 or 2 classes and didnt find them particulary useful.. nothing that really isnt common sense or that you will be helped with once you are in labour. The only thing that you will need to know is how to get there, and where to go once you are there - but even if you are unsure I'm sure there will be plenty of folk to help you.

There are tons of threads in the pregnancy section on what to put in your labour bag - thats probably one of the most important things - plenty of stuff to make you as comfortable as possible!

I'm in Uddingston, and have a ds who is 10 months - I had him at Wishaw.

midnightexpress · 07/03/2008 08:39

Hi paranoid - I didn't have mine at PRH either - they were both born at the SGH, but I'd second what GMM says about the antenatal classes. They were a bit useless, and tbh I don't think anything much can prepare you for childbirth! Do you have any good books about it? There's a Sheila Kitzinger one which was recommended to me by a friend who's a midwife. I have a copy which I could give you, but I think it's been put into storage while we sell our flat and you'll probably have given birth by the time I could find it .

Do you have any particular questions? My main tips would be take food (hospital food was inedible) and try not to go in too early if you can help it (though it's very difficult to know what that mean when it's your first I think).

TALLULAHBELLE · 07/03/2008 19:00

Hi all. Didn't make it to Garscube as we decided to put the flat up for sale & am up to my eyes. Good to hear you sold yours Midnight. It went quite quickly didn't it?

Paranoid - agree with the others that the ante-natal classes not particularly useful. You will learn more on Mumsnet. I had my DD at QMH so can't comment on PR but if you have any general questions feel free to ask away.

midnightexpress · 07/03/2008 20:30

Hi tallulah .

Yes, it did go quickly - less than a week, thank heavens. I couldn't have coped with the constant tidying for much longer I don't think. And we had people round every night, so plenty of interest - good luck with yours. Is it on the market yet? Definitely a good idea to do it while DD is still quite wee - two toddlers not a good mix when trying to tidy up (let alone move - that should be comical. The removal man came last week to give me a quote and told me that the boys would be able to 'assist with the packing of their toys'. I resisted the urge to roll on the floor laughing). Have you found somewhere yet?

When do you start work again?

TALLULAHBELLE · 07/03/2008 22:26

Flat went on market Thurs lunch. Had viewers Thurs night & got someone coming tomorrow. Have just started looking, thought should sell first so know what we have to spend. The whole offers offer crap sucks.

TALLULAHBELLE · 07/03/2008 22:39

over! Duh!

midnightexpress · 08/03/2008 08:46

Mornin chaps!

Does anyone know of a good plumber in Glasgow? Our flamin' shower (NEWLY FITTED - can you tell how annoyed I am? ) is leaking again - the problem that set off all the building work we had to have done before Xmas. I'm reluctant to get the guy back who did it as he was pretty useless, but we really can't afford any more problems when we're selling, so I'd really like to get it sorted. We just can't seem to find anyone decent. We were recommended JH Horn, but they charge a fortune. Any suggestions gratefully received.

TALLULAHBELLE · 08/03/2008 10:49

Morning - sorry no idea re plumbers. Would think the guy who fitted it would be responsible for fixing it for free since its his fault.

midnightexpress · 08/03/2008 14:10

Well yes, I think he would be, but he was useless, and left us stuck in that flippin rental flat until the day before Xmas Eve when he didn't turn up to do the job as promised, so am reluctant to use him again. But have a friend of a friend who says he'll do it now, so panic over.

vio · 08/03/2008 15:28

Hi Paranoid, I was at PRM, it was okay, I was lucky in a way cos had a very good midwife, don't worry about antenatal classes, I attended all the classes but needed an emergency C-section at the end, like fellow mums said, nothing can prepare you for the actual child birth, be positive is the key I suppose.

I feel thankful that my midwife was so lovely and kind, she was there for me and supported me all the way, her name is Theresa and she's originally from Italy, she's so lovely, I can never forget her.

nippersnappers · 10/03/2008 10:22

Hiya Ladies,
I posted this on the local page but nobody seems to use it much so I got no replies.
Thought I would try my luck on here.
Does anyone know of a good, reliable decking company based in Edinburgh/East Lothian area?
I am fed up woth people not showing to give a quote, or showing up then not getting back to me.
It's been going on since last July!!!

Oh and big wave to thw newbies.

whinegums · 10/03/2008 12:02

Hi, just found this thread. Hello! My first baby is due in June, I'm in Glasgow, and booked in for SGH. Wondered if anyone can share their experience of giving birth there and any tips? Especially if anyone has had a waterbirth. The latest info I can find is a bit ambiguous about whether the pool(s) can only be used for pain relief, or actually giving birth, so if can anyone clarify? My midwife mentioned the birth pools, but no more info - I'll ask next time, but I'm not due to see them for another 3 weeks.

Also, not sure about attending the antenatal classes - midwife said there were Parentcraft classes, are they the same thing?! Anyone been to them at SGH?

midnightexpress · 10/03/2008 12:26

HI whinegums. I had both mine at SGH. Just off to get their lunch but will post more once I get them down for a kip (hopefully ).

midnightexpress · 10/03/2008 14:00

Right. Peace reigns.

I know the SGH is building a new maternity unit - not sure if it's open yet. If so, this info may be out of date (my youngest is 13 months old). When I was there, there was one birthing pool, but you were only allowed to use it for labouring in, not to give birth (it's because the midwives didn't have the right training). And it was only available on a first come first served basis, so you could get lucky or not. I wasn't allowed to use it when ds1 was on his way because they broke my waters and they thought there was some blood or something in the amniotic fluid. I ended up with a crash cs, and so when ds2 came along, they had me all wired up and I couldn't use it then either. hey ho. But the room looked nice: definitely nicer than the other labour rooms.

If you really want a water birth, you might consider switching to Paisley, where I'm pretty sure you can give birth in the pool.

The antenatal classes I attended were organised by the ante-natal unit I attended (Millbrae) and were not all that useful - but you do get a tour of the labour ward, which was quite useful, because we knew where to go once it arrived (and inevitably it will be the middle of the night!). The parentcraft stuff at the SGH may be ante-natal - not sure, but they defiitely do post0natal stuff there. We went when ds1 was about 5 weeks old and I was struggling to establish bf (failed in the end . If this happens to you though, with the benefit of hindsight (and MN!), I'd go to the QMH, where the bf help is apparently brilliant - some of the others on here (Weeonion, Tallulah) have used it and can tell you more.

My only other tip is TAKE FOOD -the SGH food is ghastly, and DP was dispatched to M&S at Braehead to bring me nice things to eat.

Do ask away if there's anything else.

And welcome !

geordiemacminx · 10/03/2008 14:13

Hey ladies - I'm thinking about going to Junglee Fun in Uddingston tomorrow late morning of anyone fancies it?

whinegums · 10/03/2008 14:14

Thank you midnightexpress. No, it doesn't look the new unit is open yet. I'm going to go and have a look around anyway, whether or not I do the classes. They do tours on Wednesday mornings apparently. Hopefully will find out about the birth pool or lack of soon.

I will pack a cool bag and make sure DP keeps it topped up! Can't bear nasty food! Thanks again for this.

midnightexpress · 10/03/2008 14:20

I could be up for it GMM, but I'd have to go for 10ish because I'd need to get back to pick ds1 up from nursery at about 12.30. DS2 has just started walking and is desperate to run around with his big bro, but not steady enough to be let loose in the great outdoors yet, so soft play definitely fave at the moment.

What time were you thinking of going?
