fathersnot seen mine in 20yrs no intention of ever seeing him again ever

Kewcumber · 26/07/2007 14:46

my grandmother was an alcoholic and dies from related problems. My mum remains sad that she didn't think her family were worth living for so I do understand. but it's not really that simple is it. Alcoholism has a way of insulating you from normal feelings, its a bit like being a drug addict.

We are a family riddled with alocholics either dead or reformed. No living, unreformed ones tellingly.

stepfordwife · 26/07/2007 14:48

oh sushi, that's so sad. i'm sorry. One of my great sadnesses (after my dad dying) is also that he never saw his grandchildren and ds1 (named after him) is his spitting image, too.

stepfordwife · 26/07/2007 14:49

..and he woiuld have been a real partner in crime

SushiMummy · 26/07/2007 14:53

Yes, I've been lurking on the alcoholic thread on MN for a while to try to understand the disease. I know my dad had had problems with his business and this probably triggered his drinking. It's too late now but I still feel guilty not being able to help.

SushiMummy · 26/07/2007 15:29

Steppie, I wanted to name DS after my dad, too. Or rather mixture of DH's dad and my dad's name and came up with WILMOTT and DH said 'no, he's not a fxxking hamster!'

Kewcumber · 26/07/2007 16:45

think I am with your DH on that one sushi!

eleusis · 26/07/2007 17:23

Alcoholism is a nasty beast which knows no rational thought. You couldn't have done anything, Sushi. You didn't cause it and you can't cure it.

stepfordwife · 26/07/2007 19:56

hmmm. yep, can see your dh's point, too, sushi...

stepfordwife · 26/07/2007 19:57

..not that i'm hamster-ist..

SushiMummy · 26/07/2007 20:17

I felt really clever when I came up with the name, tho. My other suggestions were TOKYO and NAKANO (where DS was conceived) and DH didn't even consider them.

stepfordwife · 27/07/2007 08:42

quite like nakano for a name, sushi
well, this is probably very sexist of me, but i do firmly believe the mother should have the final say on my names.
as i said to dh:"look, matey, when you've squeezed a baby through your willy, you can choose all the bloody names you want, all RIGHT?"

stepfordwife · 27/07/2007 08:42

ANY names.

SushiMummy · 27/07/2007 09:11

Have you had your coffee yet, Steppie?

Kewcumber · 27/07/2007 09:56

yes but how would Nakano work in Japan? Would it be the equivalent of calling your child "Blackpool"?

eleusis · 27/07/2007 10:07

It would be like calling him Brooklyn (as in Beckham).

SushiMummy · 27/07/2007 10:09

Indeed QC. Nanako is a boring town and no-one would want to call their DC 'Gunnersbury' or 'Kingston' or 'Blackpool' unless you are Victoria Beckham.

SushiMummy · 27/07/2007 10:09

x posted, ele.

eleusis · 27/07/2007 10:14

I said it first!

ComeOVeneer · 27/07/2007 12:50

I would say to mark off Sat 13th and Sat 20th of October in your calendars as these currently are the dates with the most people on. So KC/paddle and anyone else not down yet will that suit?

eleusis · 27/07/2007 12:59

Also, if Nanou's going away party ends up on Set. 7 some of the Sept. dates might be abit too soon after the last night out.

ComeOVeneer · 27/07/2007 13:11

Has a venue been discussed for Nanou's do?

OP posts:
eleusis · 27/07/2007 13:14

No, thought we'd settle the date first. Then worry about venue. I'll probably just ask her where she wants to go -- seeing how it's her party.

eleusis · 27/07/2007 13:14

Although, if you have any suggestions feel free to speak.

SushiMummy · 27/07/2007 13:23

Ooops, just remmebered DH's niece's 21st is on 13 Oct. Sorry.
