Brand new thread for July.

Morning all and hello to newbies. Welcome!

The Kew music festival sounds fab. If the weather is nice, we'd love to come!

As for the meet up on 11 Aug, I still can't decide. It's all up to DH who is not too well lately, well, GP said it'd take 6 months to get completely over glandular fever so he's still a bit weak. Can I decide nearer the time? If I come, I'd bring some sushi (DIY tho).

foxcub · 19/07/2007 10:35

Kew is that Music Village? I used to volunteer for them They're fab - will deffo be up for that one!!

Starry - Chinese Dragons Club is the one they are offering at DS1's school too He already does Spanish but that is free - kindly offered by two teachers as a free add on We've expressed an interest in the Dragons Club. So you don't rate it much?

Mellow - its a private after school club and voluntary.

Starry do your school do the Mad Science Club too? DS1 loves that one!!

Kew - I might be up for Saturday and would be aiming to get VERY drunk!

DS2 is feeding for Britain atm and woke me 5 or 6 times last night - I am so tired I have double vision. I've put DD in nursery all day so I can get a nap later... if DS2 lets me

StarryStarryNight · 19/07/2007 11:00

Foxcub, how old is your DS1? I think what they get out of it is highly age related. My boy is five, and in reception, so not yet a confident reader. They get sheets with vocubulary they work on each week, but as he cant read it is not that relevant to him. I see no point in confusing him by using these sheets as reading exercises as he wouldnt recognise the words anyway, and he is already bilingual and has french in school.

foxcub · 19/07/2007 11:06

Starry - DS1 is just 7. He's been doing Spanish for two years now and TBH I think you are right, as he has only really started to get a grasp of it in the last few months. He wants to do the Dragons Club, but I suspect he's attracted by the name of it more than anything!

He's allowed 3 after school clubs, so if he chooses Mandarin, he'll need to srop something else. Although I understand why Manadarin is so important, I like the Spanish as well as it too is widely spoken and probably a bit easier for him, being latin based.

amidaiwish · 19/07/2007 14:04

DD1 does french at nursery. even though i am sure she isn't going to gain massively from this (at 3 years old!), what it has done is make her confident saying foreign words and happy to do so. on holiday in spain she was saying ola, gracias, por favor in restaurants etc. Hopefully when she does come to learn another language she'll be interested, motivated and confident enough to go for it, and not embarassed to have a go.

sfxmum · 19/07/2007 15:01

hello all

kew -sorry did not see your post until now, i know it will be open late this friday for a friends picnic as we were planning to go, but the weather is not promising.
not sure about the weekend

absolutely in favour of languages from very young there are many advantages to speaking more than one language development wise not just because it will be useful in the future

eleusis · 19/07/2007 17:44

I heard from Nanou, who is not a happy camper. So, everyone e-mail her a cyber hug. She is having a rough time at work and a bit stressed about pending move to Switzerland.

Wish I could give up work and run off to Switzerland.

She said she could do a going away party on 7 or 8 Sept. Actually she said she was bad company and we wouldn't want to be around her, to which I replied "Rubbish!! We are your frineds. You need a night out."

amidaiwish · 19/07/2007 17:47

oh and Faylisa, re marble hill - we go sometimes. not sure what time it starts as we don't get there til 2ish, but i think it is 1!

both my 3yo and 19m old love it. giant sandpit, lots of toys. rabbit/tortoise to have a gawp at etc etc.

foxcub · 19/07/2007 18:29

Poor nanou - will e-mail her mega hugs

foxcub · 19/07/2007 18:30

Ele _ I could do 7 Sept, but not 8th as that is Monti's baptism date!

I need to put out an alert to find a buyer who's promised to get back to me about my baby hammock.

What's the best category on MN to do that?

Kew - how did you find out about the Music Festival on 18/19 August - I haven't seen it publicised anywhere!!

Kewcumber · 19/07/2007 19:19

foxcub · 19/07/2007 19:27

Oh no! I've been left dangling in suspense!!!!

ComeOVeneer · 19/07/2007 19:35

I could swap the do at my place to the 7th/8th if that is any better.

rosmerta · 19/07/2007 19:57

evening all,

Kew, have you thought any more about tumble tots for ds? Have decided that its definitely worth the money, ds slept for 3hrs this afternoon , which gave me enough time to finish the book for my book group tonight!

amidaiwish · 19/07/2007 20:00

which tt do you go to?
i've been looking at the little gym in hampton hill but it is sooo expensive, esp when both want to do a class.

rosmerta · 19/07/2007 20:04

I go to chiswick which is £8.50 per class

amidaiwish · 19/07/2007 20:09

oh, a bit too far for us.
The Little Gym you have to pay for the term, on top of annual membership of £40 - it works out about £17 a go

rosmerta · 19/07/2007 20:13

Ours is £20 annual membership then you pay for the term as well. But I only have one ds and although I think there is a discount for siblings it still adds up doesn't it?

stepfordwife · 19/07/2007 22:44

evening all
how you diddling?

welcome, cesca. i've got ds1,7, ds2, 6, and dd, 2

starry -might have seen you rushing around mortlake/east sheen then..

foxie - thank the lord they break-up tomorrow. got end-of-term-itis and i've been a complete divvy this week - losing things, locking myself out, deleting (accidentally, nay, divvily) a load of work from my computer . guess what i should be doing now...

i'd be on for a picnic next thurs

kew - too late, but have a fab weekend on the island. the music village is fabarooney, but will be on hols i think

Nanou's Leaving do

mellow2 · 20/07/2007 08:52

QC,

You are the 'woman who knows everything'. I'm going to persuade dh to attend the music festival.

Steppie,
Do you work for a newspaper? I'm sending my press releases to all media organisations I can think of and I was wondering if you have someone who covers green issues at your workplace that I could send the release to.
