Hi there, I'm a 29 year old Mum of two (Amber 2yrs & Finn 4mths) relocating to Somerset (hopefully b4 end of the summer) most probably Tauton, but have never been there in my life - so many questions, so little time. Would love to know more about area; where's good v where's bad, Good schools v bad schools - general advice really. Help?

Hello sorry cant really be of much help, just wanted to say my DH grew up down that way, and went to school in Taunton, and remembers it all very fondly. He would be very jealous of your move there as we hope to do the same in a few years. He went to Taunton boys age 11-18, and loved it. I have only been to Taunton a couple of times but it seems lovely (certainly compared to London). Am sure someone who lives there will be along soon with some good advice. Good luck!

Hi, I grew up in Taunton and have lots of freinds and family still there. We moved away around 5 yrs ago to London, then Hants but still visit Taunton very frequently.

Good/bad areas.... TBH there are no terribly bad areas. Halcon/Lyngford are the only really bad ones, but they are predominantly council areas. There are lots of lovely villages just outside of Taunton.. Kingston St Mary, Cheddon Fitzpaine, Ruishton, to name a few.

The town centre is very good. It's changed quite a bit even in the 5 yrs since we left. It has all the leading shops and lots of variety.

Schools, well DS1 was at North Town School and it was brilliant! I'm not very in touch with other schools, but do know there aren't many really bad schools. My best freinds daughters go to Cheddon Fitzpaine school and she is happy with it. My nephews go to Cotford St Luke School, but actually I have to say my sister isn't that happy with the school.

Ooh nursery schools/playgroups...DS1 went to Albys, which was and still is very good. Same lady running it, so it can't have changed that much.

Anyway, I could go on and on. Basically Taunton is a nice place to live, friendly enough, I think you will be very happy there. HTH

lol the thread title made me laugh

why are you relocating here if you have never visited?

majorityofone · 13/02/2007 13:44

Hello

I moved to Taunton from London without having seen it 3 years ago and can honestly say it was the best thing we ever did. I had no idea whether it was big, small or even had a starbucks..it did. We just found a house we liked and bought it.

Most areas are nice and Parkfield Schhol is very good and is in a lovely catchment area (Galmington or Comeytrowe) which in turn has a fantastic secondary school in Castle School.

The town centre is improving all the time as better shops move in but above all it is a very friendly place which lots of people have moved too so you don't feel like you are the only one who has not lived there your whole life.

If you have any other questions please ask and I hope your move goes well

We're not in taunton, but moved to Somerset in October....and we love it, best thing we ever did !! DS (6) and DD (4) have settled in really well, as have our two tabby cats. We moved from Wiltshire so not too far, but before that were in East Sussex. Have been really surprised by home many people have relocated to this area...... Good luck with the move - we were in same position as you this time last year !!!!

Steppy1 · 16/02/2007 12:57

woops, meant how many people not home ...... Doh !!

TooTicky · 16/02/2007 12:59

You will be near the West Somerset Railway which is great

Beetrootccio · 16/02/2007 13:03

Where do you know?

Do you want village or town

I moved from London to a village outside Taunton and hated it. Happier now I am in a place with street lights/pavements. and shop!

Beetrootccio · 16/02/2007 13:04

shops

OrmIrian · 16/02/2007 13:12

I must admit I'm curious that you're moving here without visiting ... but anyway I like Somerset and Taunton is quite a good centre. Lots going on there and it's growing fast. Lovely villages and countryside around. Don't know much about the different areas - I lived in the area for years as a child but not actually in the town - but I don't think there's anywhere too scary to live.

Beetrootccio · 16/02/2007 13:15

social life = am dram or church

Winston · 12/03/2007 21:06

Kerpots, just reading through lots of threads and came across this one. I have lived in Taunton all my life and know most of the areas pretty well. If there is any info you need just holler, am sure I can help. All I can say is its like any place really. It has its good and bad points. Good points are good shops and loads of activities for all ages. Close to lovely countryside walks. Bad points are TRAFFIC! Because I was picky about the nursery I send my DD1 to I have to travel across town which can take over an hour to get there and back. I would be quicker taking her to Bristol. Also house prices ridiculous. Overall though, I wouldnt leave!

morningpaper · 12/03/2007 21:07

Kerpots, shhh but I live there

everything else about it is DULL though

morningpaper · 12/03/2007 21:09

Winston and majority of one - do you live HERE then? Are we neighbours?

Tell me where you hang out

ambercat · 12/03/2007 21:17

Hi, i live in taunton, moved here 8 yrs ago and tbh was dreading it, thought it would be the back of beyond!!

I love it now and feel really settled here, ds and dd are settled in a lovely school (north town aswell calebsmummy!!) and i can't see myself moving now.
