There's a chance we may be moving there and I was wondering if any mners live nearby. I would like to move but the thought of having nobody (girls) to go for a drink with fills me with dread so is there anybody socialable nearby who'd come for a drink with me if we moved. I'm very nice honestly!

New Mill is nice.

Hepworth lots of tiny lanes etc but local junior/infant schools meant to be good

mrsvern · 07/02/2007 13:47

BTW Holmfirth/Hombridge/New mill nearer to Oldham than Denby Dale by about 15 mins. Bugger to get to Oldham over the tops though in bad winter - in fact almost impossible. Unless you go through to Huddersfield and along M62 adding in 30 mins or so to journey

ledodgy · 07/02/2007 14:01

Hmm he'd just have to go via Huddersfield when the weather is bad then he still wouldn't be travelling for as long as he does now. Good news that it's nearer though Holmfirth looks lovely what are the schools etc like there?

I've not heard of a really bad one. There are a lot of smallish junior/infants school in all the surrounding villages and the main high school is Holmfirth high. I don't know much about that though sorry, my DS is only 2.5

ledodgy · 07/02/2007 14:04

Is all of holmfirth nice then or is there any areas I should watch out for?

Off the top of my head I can't think of any area that I definately wouldn't live, might be one side of the road over another kind of thing but I like it here. I am in Cinderhills.
Holmfirth itself has the usual banks, library, few pubs, some lovely restaurants, swimming pool but very brr in there lol, park, small market and large ish co op.
Nearest big shops/supermarket is Huddersfield closely following in travel time by Wakefield.

Thank you.

Just appearing to say I'm feeling jealous. Lived in Denby Dale as a little girl and would love to move back! Driving across to Lancs can be difficult in winter but you get used to it - when we moved to Penistone, my mother used to commute to Manchester on the A628 every day.

Bozza · 07/02/2007 14:38

Did you really Edam? I am learning all sorts. I didn't grow up in the area but my parents are from there originally and so my maternal grandparents lived in Holmfirth and my paternal ones in Skelmanthorpe.

DS and DD will go to Scissett eventually Sarah.

sarahhal · 07/02/2007 14:50

Maybe see you Bozza and ledody at the school gates!!!!

NbgsYellowFeathers · 07/02/2007 17:05

Led, thats where last of the summer wine was filmed, Holmfirth. Just to give you an idea. Gorgeous place.

I loved the Stable Cottage at Hepworth. That was lovely inside.

gingermonkey · 07/02/2007 20:03

Isn't Holmfirth a bit tie dye and herbal teas these days? It is very pretty though. Woolley and Notton are both lovely, but overpriced. BIL lives there and his house is a 2 bed cottage and worth around £250 grand. I saw a nice 4 bedder for £800 grand which down this way would be around 4 or 5. And you find that a lot of places around here are dry (no pub) because of some age old Quaker thing. Woolley, Notton and West Bretton are all dry...what a waste!!!

mrsvern · 07/02/2007 20:05

No not really gingermonkey. There is an organic cafe but its lovely.
Marsden is where all the pagan ritual stuff happens

LawdyMissTutter · 07/02/2007 20:05

edam, when were you in penistone? (have we discussed this before?) i grew up there - left to go to college in 1989

LawdyMissTutter · 07/02/2007 20:06

(and, ledodge, my brother lives in holmfirth. he is the least tie dye and herbal teas man you could wish to meet - think more bench t-shirt and pint of strong lager)

gingermonkey · 07/02/2007 20:11

Think it might be Marsden I'm thinking of then! There are so many lovely villages around here and most of them you don't even realise exist until you happen upon them. DH and me got a bit lost around Halifax once and there were some lovely places, surrounded by beautiful countryside. I have no idea where we were though!!!

ledodgy · 07/02/2007 22:47

I can do tie dye t shirts and paganism rather that then hoodies and scallies.
Miss Tutter how old is your brother and is he single/ I have a very lovely and good looking single sil and he sounds just her type!

ah, he just got married ledodge!

edam · 08/02/2007 18:44

Tutter, I lived in Penistone between 81 and 87 when I left to go to university. Where did you go to school? I was at Penistone Grammar for a couple of years, then Sheffield High.

ledodgy · 08/02/2007 18:59

What's HOLMBRIDGE like please is it near holmfirth?
