There's a chance we may be moving there and I was wondering if any mners live nearby. I would like to move but the thought of having nobody (girls) to go for a drink with fills me with dread so is there anybody socialable nearby who'd come for a drink with me if we moved. I'm very nice honestly!

Yes! I live about two miles away. There are meetups Huddersfield/Wakefield/Barnsley threads but I have never been because they are usually when I am working. How old are your children?

I'm not aware that they do any night time meet ups but that could always be sorted! There is a cheap but very good curry restaurant in Denby Dale (the Palace) where I go with some other Mums that I know. Please post if there is anything else you want to know.

Sorry had to wake DD and then I promised DS that I would take a football on the rec after school. They are the opposite way round to mine - DS is 6 this month and DD will be 3 in May. I like living here although there is no one local town IMO - you are pretty much midway between Huddersfield, Barnsley and Wakefield. But it is very handy for the M1 and so easy to get to Meadowhall or into Leeds which is a nice city IMO. But there is lots of countryside etc. Or have you already visited a bit and know what it is like?

NbgsYellowFeathers · 05/02/2007 17:11

Awww Ledodgy, we lived very near to there before we moved in the Summer.

There are a couple of mumsnetters there and they go and have meet ups at the soft play place near.

Theres Alibo, Trace2, Phoenixgirl, chloe55, gingermonkey (i think) and loads more.
I also come down alot because dh's family are in Barnsley.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 05/02/2007 17:11

Lovely place to live btw.

ledodgy · 05/02/2007 17:42

I've been there a few times befoe as dp's brother and sil live there (it's their house we may end up buying). We fancy living in the countryside and the commute to dp's work would be less too and because of the price difference to Liverpool our mortgage would be less.
Where are you now NBG?
Bozza I do most of my shopping online anyway but quite fancy a few days out in leeds too, my Aunty lives there so have another reason to go other than shopping.

Just like me ledodgy. The only problem with Leeds is the cost of parking.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 06/02/2007 08:56

I'm in Northallerton now Led. So North Yorks.
Thats very countryside ish. Come and live here

My B&SIL live in Scisset, which is just around the corner and dh's parents are in Barnsley itself.
Leeds isnt too far but like Bozza said, its just the bloomin parking costs. Its ridiculous. I think its cheaper to go by train now!
Also you have Meadowhall down the M1 which is fabbola for shopping.

I think if we ever moved back down that way, I would certainly pick Denby or Scisset.

So does your dh work in Liverpool then? Or have I got that totally wrong?

The meet up thread

NbgsYellowFeathers · 06/02/2007 09:04

Oh and I'd love to meet up with you when we're down visiting.

Chicken Pox permitting

Bozza · 06/02/2007 09:07

nbg I never realised you were so near to here at one point. I live in Clayton West.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 06/02/2007 09:09

Yeah!
I always meant to take dd to the railway. Its literally a spit from B&SIL's house.
They live on a street opposite the school field, beginning with P.
I do love it round there.

LawdyMissTutter · 06/02/2007 09:15

hi ledodge

don't live there any more but was brought up a stone's throw from there

tis very pretty but can be damned cold

Bozza · 06/02/2007 09:25

Oh we've been on the railway a few times because it is walking distance (even for 2yo DD) from our house but it is a bit pricy.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 06/02/2007 09:28

We were stayed there for a week last month. I bet we probably crossed paths

Ellbell · 06/02/2007 09:31

Hi LeDodgy

I live nearby too (closer to Wakey, but in that general neck of the woods). Don't generally look at meetup threads because I work full-time, but will vouch for what everyone says about it being a lovely area. Where does your dh work? My dh is commuting to Manchester atm, and although it's quite a long way it is definitely do-able.

Hope it all goes well.

Ellbell · 06/02/2007 09:32

PS We moved up here from 'down south' 3.5 years ago, and haven't regretted it for a minute.

ledodgy · 06/02/2007 13:45

OOh just seen all the replies. My dp works in Oldham so it's an hour and a half commute from where we are now so Denby dale way will be alot nearer for him. I think we're definately set on moving now whether bil sells his house or not. We'll probably by a 2 bedroom whilst the children are young so we'll have a smaller mortgage but a better standard of living nicer area, garden etc. When ds starts school and I start my PGCE we'll move to a bigger house.
NBG I'd love to meet up with you too when we move and when you visit.

Bozza · 06/02/2007 13:57

Oh so you are definitely going ahead then? And will you be definitely in Denby Dale itself, if your BIL doesn't sell his house (sorry didn't get that piece of the puzzle)?

ledodgy · 06/02/2007 14:23

LOl the thing is we were going to move round there last year but never quite got round to it. Dp's bro and sil live there but have recently split up sil has moved and bil is back in Liverpool and they want to sell the house but nothing is definate yet. We had a talk last night (me and dp) and both of us are fed up here. Financially it's a struggle as I'm a sahm through choice but of course it means making sacrifices. I intend to do a pgce when ds starts school/preschool but until then we figured that rather than live here where neither us particulary want to be always worrying about money and dp stressed with the commute why not move like we originally planned but to a two bedroom which will lower our mortgage in the meantime which will make things easier and also live somewhere nicer iyswim. I didn't think the 4 of us in a two bed would be possible before but realised yesterday that bil and sil have been doing it for years quite comfortably and we'd only do it until ds started school then we'd move to a three or four bed. I hate the house we live in atm. We moved from my family home (my parents died and dp then moved in there with me) I lived in my previous house for 27 years we sold it because we had alot of student debt and needed to pay it off so basically downsized in the area sense as the house we are in now is bigger. This house has never felt like home though and I miss my garden.

Sorry that was an essay wasn't it!

NbgsYellowFeathers · 07/02/2007 08:26

Ha haaaa!
You are in the Sandwich Generation. Living in a house for 27 years. Dont tell me that was from being a little girl.
I'll never believe you.

Have you started looking at properties yet? Try for places like Scisset, Clayton West, Skelmenthorpe, Bretton or West Bretton, Wooley. Even the outer parts of Barnsley like Darton or Mapplewell. They might even be a bit cheaper. You tend to find commuters go for Darton and Mapp as its convienient for the motorway.

Bozza · 07/02/2007 08:31

Woolley might be a bit pricy IME. But all the others would be great.

ledodgy · 07/02/2007 08:46

OOh I'll have a look cheers!
NBG I'm only 30 lol but yes I was in that house since I was born I had never moved house till I moved here!
