Meet-ups

When meeting up take sensible precautions. Meet in a public place and let others know where you are going.

These big mumsnet meet ups - what happens then?

I've done a local mumsnet meet up with about 8 people and that was scary enough. Turning up to a venue without knowing who people are and what they look like.
What would you do if you turned up at a HUGE meet up like the xmas one that's being organised? How do you know who people are? Does everyone have to wear a badge or something to give themselves away?
I'm sitting here, picturing groups of ladies whispering to each other...."that must be "xyz", I never thought she'd be like that" etc etc.
I'm curious.
I think I'd be too scared to go by myself, I admire those of you that are going to do this.

Im alright cause Ive met a few Mnners in real life that are going, so I will at least know a few people.

Am nervous about it though, more because I dont want to get drunk and have people forever think 'Oh thats her that fell off the table....' when I post

I am looking forward to seeing if the Mnners there match up to my mental images of them

DumbledoresGirl · 10/08/2006 17:10

You sound like you are weighing up the possibility of going Sparkler!

Sparkler1 · 10/08/2006 17:11

Yes Tamba - that could be a bit embarassing coudn't it. It's not like you'll never see/hear from them again is it. Can imagine the whole of active convos with titles referring to the embarassing situation.

Sparkler - im with you. I can imagine sitting in a corner and people whispering "thats the one who..." "isnt she this that and the other!". Im keen to go, but im SUPERshy.

crunchie · 10/08/2006 17:11

Huge is better as there are always going to be people to talk to!!

Put your name on the list, stick a couple of sparklers in your hair so we know who you are and come along. The funniest bit is the bar staff reaction to the 'Oy Custard, it your round' or 'Bloody hell CountessDracula I thought you were blond!'

Sparkler1 · 10/08/2006 17:11

It went into my mind for about 5 seconds and then back out again.

I am planning to just drink lots and let my hair down. And then pretend I cant remember a thing the next morning and claim all posts relating to anything I may or may not have done are made up

DumbledoresGirl · 10/08/2006 17:13

But it's creeping back in again! I can see the door slightly moving!

Sparkler1 · 10/08/2006 17:13

Good idea

PMSL!

crunchie · 10/08/2006 17:15

BTW NO-ONE ever brings up anything personal they have ever read on a thread with you, I can promise. Tablecloths, grapes or other trivia, but MN is still anon, and even after going to big meet ups I have no qualms in writing personal stuff, in fact it helps more in some ways.

Last yearthere were little/no embarrassing stories to tell, a huge amount of drunkenness and a lot of fun

Sparkler1 · 10/08/2006 17:16

crunchie · 10/08/2006 17:18

Sparkler1 · 10/08/2006 17:20

Looks like you had a lot of fun. Who's that really going for it in the background?

Are there anymore meet up piccies from last year - would love to see them. Might boost my confidence seeing some faces and I might put my name down for this year.

I am soooo taking my camera!!!

crunchie · 10/08/2006 17:23

That is me, essbee and serendipitty I think.

StrapsBabiesToRockets · 10/08/2006 17:31

NOpe. No cameras allowed.....

I was really nervous about the last one, and spent a large part of the evening huddled into a corner with a few other lovely MNers, who, are now very good friends. So, being huddled in the corner didnt do me any harm.

I was very self conscious, however, I was unaware that I was in the depths of PND which didnt help matters one iota! When I finally got to grips with it, it was the lovely MNers I had spent an evening with that supported me.

StrapsBabiesToRockets · 10/08/2006 17:33

So, basically, what I mean to say is, that there will be lots of others like you, who are nervous, and shying away in corners.

We arent all extroverts or folks that wander from one group to the next.

Gingerbear had a load of photos i do believe....

Quootiepie · 10/08/2006 17:36

i think i might put my name down... but im quite new...
