These big mumsnet meet ups - what happens then?

I've done a local mumsnet meet up with about 8 people and that was scary enough. Turning up to a venue without knowing who people are and what they look like.
What would you do if you turned up at a HUGE meet up like the xmas one that's being organised? How do you know who people are? Does everyone have to wear a badge or something to give themselves away?
I'm sitting here, picturing groups of ladies whispering to each other...."that must be "xyz", I never thought she'd be like that" etc etc.
I'm curious.
I think I'd be too scared to go by myself, I admire those of you that are going to do this.

I was new when I put my name down Quootiepie.

I think I had joined about 4 weeks previous. Shows I had mental health issues really

Mind you, the meet up wasnt until 3-4 months later so i had time to get used to some names etc.

Beetle73 · 11/08/2006 12:56

Here's another one feeling apprehensive about it. Have never been to a meet-up before and have never met any other MNers (that I'm aware of.)
Can't even arrange to meet other people on the train, because I live about 10 minutes away from the place.
Can we have special badges if we're meet-up virgins?

Bugsy2 · 11/08/2006 13:54

I'm a real old timer & I've never been. Have always enjoyed the anonymity. But I'm thinking I may go this year.
I'm a bit worried that it will be like seeing a film of a book I really love & it being a disappointment!

bluejelly · 11/08/2006 14:00

I feel the same Bugsy2
Didn't go last year cos I enjoyed the anonymity though really think I might this time round... would love to put faces to names etc

crunchie · 11/08/2006 22:02

BJ thing is you forget the faces/names so quickly as there are just too many. SO anonimity still reigns afterwards IYKWIM.

There are a few MNers I have met in RL a couple of times, but it is fine honest

MarscusGarvey · 11/08/2006 22:14

Wear a badge.
Drink alcohol.
Accuse young spindly men of being tech.
Steal...sorry borrow... a scarf.
Eat food.
Drink alcohol.
Dance.
Drink alcohol.
Go home singing in taxi!

NotQuiteLouisRiel · 11/08/2006 22:17

Everyone swaps mooncups ... obviously.

Tortington · 11/08/2006 23:26

scream at 60 people to shut up and sit at a table
miss starter
eat pizza
stand at bar for rest of night whilst 60 mumsnetters pay for meal throwing money at me
think " fuck can i run fast in these heels if it doesn't add up?"
get pissed in someones hotel room

tried to talk to different people but didn't get much of a chance. and am not a chatty person. cant remember anyone except gomez - thats cos she bought me 2 beers adn they were expensive. and sherlock becuae she went round getting loose change to help with the smooth (not so) running of the payment bit and serenity( huge bag of cd and vids for my dd for xmas) and serendippity ( shoes).

truth is everyone feels like you. why dya think they are all meeting at the station? or in a city before they get on a train.

everyone is scared- i think its a good opportunity to meet some fab people.

handlemecarefully · 11/08/2006 23:38

Not actually entertaining the idea of coming along (you'll be relieved to hear), but just hugely curious; are there palpable tensions between certain mumsnetters?
[all agog emoticon]

crunchie · 11/08/2006 23:39

Hey custy that was MY hotel room, I am well annoyed you don't rememebr. There was me, beetroot and essbee, with you and gomez. I just remeber pissing my self laughing at your NORTHERN accept and Gomez talking about 3 houses for some random reason. Oh and drinking tea I think

SherlockLGJ · 11/08/2006 23:41

Mars

You fibber, we did not sing in the taxi.......

Oh arse did we ???

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 11/08/2006 23:43

you sit on the tube texting your best mate asking her why you are going out for dinner with 60 people you've never met in your life. unsuprisingly she doesn't know. then you eye everyone up wondering if they are going too. the closer you get the more likely it seems. when you get to the right tube station and you hear someone in the same tube station lift as you saying "i wonder if people will use real names" you take a very deep breath. smile, and say "are you...." then you breathe a sigh of relief cos at least 2 people have talked to you. then when you get there you drink a lot. and get scared by custy. she did a brilliant job and I'm a bit gutted she didn't enjoy it. custy - I will buy you expensive beer this time to make it up to you.

SherlockLGJ · 11/08/2006 23:43

EXCUSE ME CUSTY

I am Mrs Organised...............

I brought that big fuck off bag of change with me.......OK I will get my coat, it is truly tragic, to be that organised.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/08/2006 00:00

Was Custy pissed?

Feck, I just thought that was how she was......

Tortington · 12/08/2006 00:16

you brought the change with you? i thought you strong armed everyoen into putting money in!

well done mrs organisation.

if it helps - when at the brighton meet they were " cmon then giz the gossip what are they like"

and i was " fucked if i know...."

suzywong · 12/08/2006 00:27

would this be an appropriate time to plug my Soho Meetup in October? Or shall I get my coat?

Beetle73 · 12/08/2006 00:31

Is there a Soho meet-up in October? Can I come SW? I'd love to meet some people before the big one.

suzywong · 12/08/2006 00:38

yes of COURSE you can

7th of October, I am thinking All Bar One or Pitcher and Piano in Dean Street but since I haven't lived in London or UK for 2 years they could be rubbish so if you know of anywhere better

Beetle73 · 12/08/2006 00:44

well, those are both pretty reliable. I haven't really been out in Soho for the last couple of years. How exciting!!

suzywong · 12/08/2006 00:47

yes!
That's what I thought - big and you pay for your food yourself so no bill splitting and plenty of places to tip out to if it all goes tits up and factions ensure and there is fighting.
So do you live in London Beetle?

Just for background, I am returning to the UK from my home in AUstralia for the first time so I will be bladdered pretty early and being a bit maudlin and homesick for my London. Just to warn you

Beetle73 · 12/08/2006 00:55

Yes - live in Holland Park at the moment, but with any luck will be in Bayswater by then.
I've gone all lightweight since pregnancy (2 years ago!), so I may also be bladdered early - maudlin for regular nights out in Soho.

suzywong · 12/08/2006 00:56

Cool
you can stand at the bar with me early then and we'll rattle off all the stations in Zone 1 in alphabetical order. It's a date

MarsLady · 13/08/2006 14:11

suzywong are you coming to London? Count me in!

suzywong · 14/08/2006 15:43

Certainly Marslady, I have a billet in Crouch End so we can share the cab home, unless I actually know you from my bad tempered days of North London and I crossed you in that previous life.

There has been rumblings on the parallel universe that is MSN that an afternoon start and a get out clause to catch a reasonable hour of train home would be preferable to a night time bender

Any thoughts

MarsLady · 14/08/2006 16:46

Well if we are managing to get on in RL.... we could just continue to party with the diehards!

Good idea to share the cab back. Now are you at the Muswell Hill end or the Islington end or even the middle of Crouch End?
